The Outlook
According to the U.S. Labor Department, the computer systems analyst profession is expected to be among the fastest growing occupations in the U.S. through the year 2010. The demand for systems analysts and other skilled computer professionals is predicted to increase as organizations attempt to maximize the efficiency of their computer systems. As international and domestic competition increases, organizations will face growing pressure to use technological advances in areas such as factory and office automation, telecommunications technology, and scientific research. The Computer Science degree program at Finger LakesCommunity College is designed to meet the growing need for well-trained computer personnel.
The Program
The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Computer Science at Finger Lakes Community College is a technical degree, offering a solid core of required computing science courses. The degree also requires a core of mathematics (including Calculus I and II) and science courses, in addition to required liberal arts courses necessary to transfer with full junior status to a four-year institution. The curriculum in the program is continually updated to reflect new changes in technology, such as the Internet and the latest networking concepts.

    Overview
The College offers a variety of computer science programs of study with a significant component of academic courses that carry transfer status with the universities. Graduates of our programs can always build on what they know and may take advanced courses from Langara or a university once they have completed the necessary prerequisites. These programs have many common courses in the first and second terms which allow students to enter the Arts and Science Program in Computer Science without committing to one specific option. We specialize in both academic studies and hands-on skills development by teaching in both the classroom and the lab.

      What is Computer Science?
Computer science is the chief discipline for teaching engineering principles and the tools used in software applications development. Training students in these principles and the use of software development tools is the primary goal of Computer Science at IU Southeast. Both associate and baccalaureate degrees are offered in Computer Science. These degree programs are integrated to allow full-time students to complete an associate degree in two years with the option of completing the baccalaureate in another two years. Each program recognizes the need to provide the understanding and knowledge of computer science appropriate for the varied careers available.
      Special Features
The demand for students trained in computer science is very high, both locally and nationally. Students are encouraged to take internship training with area businesses.
