PARIS - THE city of Paris pulled out of a long-standing corruption case against former French President Jacques Chirac on Monday, after he and his conservative political party agreed to pay euro2.2 million (S$3.9 million) in losses sustained by the city because of a party financing scandal while he was mayor. Chirac, 77, is facing trial on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust stemming from the scandal dating back to his 1977-1995 tenure as Paris mayor. The case marks the first time that a former leader of modern France has been forced to stand trial. The deal doesn't close the case, but it will remove the last plaintiff other than the state, and could take some of the courtroom pressure off Chirac when he goes to trial in late 2010 or early 2011.

It has ruled for most of the years since its founding in 1955. It is not to be confused with the now-defunct Liberal Party (Jiyūtō), which merged with the Democratic Party of Japan, the main opposition party, in November 2003.
After a striking victory in the Japan general election in 2005, the LDP held an absolute majority in the Japanese House of Representatives and formed a coalition government with the New Komeito Party. Shinzo Abe succeeded then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi as the president of the party on 20 September 2006.

The Two Who Stole the Moon Neither twin pursued film careers afterward, and Kaczynski earned a degree in law and administration from Warsaw University. He went on to a doctorate at Gdansk University, and finished in 1976. Dissent grew steadily in several cities until workers walked off the job at the Lenin Shipyards in Gdansk, a Baltic Sea port, in August of 1980. A month later, the Solidarity trade union federation came into being in Gdansk. It was ardently anti-communist, and led by an electrician named Lech Walesa; Kaczynski served as an advisor to the strike committee. The Polish government declared martial law at the end of 1981 in an effort to quash the Solidarity movement, and Kaczynski was jailed in a crackdown on activists. Finally in 1989 a faltering Polish government permitted multi-party elections, and a Solidarity-led coalition won office. Kaczynski won a seat in the Polish national senate that same year, and two years later was elected to parliament. By then he had also risen to the post of vice-chair of the Solidarity trade union.

  • zSB(3,3) There are many political parties in Israel. Election results are generally such that the parties must negotiate agreements with each other to form coalitions powerful enough (with a majority of the 120 parliament seats) to control the government.
Brief descriptions of Israel's primary political parties are provided below.
    Kadima ("Forward" in English)
    • Ideology : Kadima sees Israel as a democratic Jewish state with Jerusalem serving as the country's undivided capital. The State of Israel serves as the Jewish national home, thus the need to maintain a Jewish population majority is essential. Arab-Israeli Conflict : The Road Map Peace Plan should be followed. The Kadima party calls for the establishment of a disarmed, terror-free Palestinian state alongside Israel and the preservation of Jerusalem and large West Bank settlement blocs under Israeli control. Economy : Kadima supports capitalist free-market economics.

    Welcome to America's Conservative voice
The Conservative Party's mission is to promote and protect individual rights and freedoms as set forth in the United States Constitution, and to limit the scope of government to the authority set forth in the same. It is time to shed the "I'm a Conservative-Republican or Conservative-Democrat" label because it just positions the conservative within a sub-group of the party. A conservative hyphenated Republican or Democrat is not participating in a true Conservative movement. We need to face up to the reality that we conservatives are being used because we have no opportunity to "Lead" from the sub-group. And today's political results of either major party has resulted in many conservatives deciding to no longer "Follow." More... Why Volunteer? Almost fifty years ago, a charity was founded on the thought that, "It's better to light one candle than curse the darkness." That is a wonderful thought, but the candle metaphor has another lesson. In order to give light, a candle must consume itself. Volunteer and be recognized for your positive attitude on making a difference.

    Texas - Political parties
Until recent years, the Democratic Party had dominated politics in Texas. William P. Clements, Jr., elected governor in 1978, was the first Republican since Reconstruction to hold that office. No Republican carried Texas in a presidential election until 1928, when Herbert Hoover defeated Democrat Al Smith, a Roman Catholic at a severe disadvantage in a Protestant fundamentalist state. Another Roman Catholic, Democratic presidential candidate John Kennedy, carried the state in 1960 largely because he had a Texan, Lyndon Johnson, on his ticket. Aside from the Populists, third parties have played a minor role in Texas politics. The Native American (Know-Nothing) Party helped elect Sam Houston governor in 1859. In 1968, George Wallace of the American Independent Party won 19% of the Texas popular vote and in 1992 native son Ross Perot picked up 22% of the vote. Following passage of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, registration of black voters increased to about 11.5% of the total population of voters. Between 1895 and 1967, no black person served as a state legislator. By 1993, however, there were 472 blacks holding elective office. At about the same time. Hispanic elected officials numbered 2,215. Democrat Henry Cisneros

EXCLUSIVE: Palin to stump for conservative Democrats While the analysts and fellow politicians continue to debate the wisdom of her resignation decision, Mrs. Palin said she is eager to fight for her conservative beliefs when she leaves office.
