How to grow plants in containers By John Pohly, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension agent, horticulture

Container Gardening By John Pohly, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension agent, horticulture Container gardening is the city dweller's answer to the big backyard garden of yesteryear. You may not have a half acre to plant in flowers and vegetables, but you can get just about the same effect by growing plants in pots. Containers come in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials. What you choose will depend upon the type of plant and the location. A bonsai, for example, usually will be grown in a small container that won't allow a large expanse of roots to develop. A regular tree in a planter along the street will need a large container to allow for development of a larger root system. You also can use planter boxes of varying sizes to grow vegetables and flowers on balconies and patios. Or fill an old discarded wheelbarrow with soil, poke drain holes in the bottom and use to grow geraniums and cascading petunias. As you think about the size of the container, consider that when filled with moist soil, weight can be a major factor. If you are planning on a large container, mount it on casters so it can be moved easily. Beware of decorative planters that lack drainage holes. This creates water-logged soil and rotting roots. Research shows that the old practice of placing a layer of gravel in the bottom of the container, to give some room for water to accumulate without saturating the soil, doesn't really work. If you want to use a decorative planter that doesn't have a drain hole, put your plants in a regular flower pot and place it inside the decorative container.

Gardening in Containers
Growing in Small and Soilless Spaces
Your students certainly wouldn't be the first to try their hands at confining garden plants. Historically, evidence abounds of plants perched in pots, but perhaps the most famous example is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, built by King Nebuchadnezzar II in the sixth century B.C. near modern-day Baghdad. These immense gardens were not actually hanging, but consisted of a daunting number of container gardens cascading from a terraced hillside.
We're not suggesting anything nearly so elaborate. Even the smallest outdoor nook can sport a thriving crop of vegetables, herbs, and flowers in containers. With some creative thinking and recycled materials from baskets to old shoes, your students can design special theme plantings, entice butterflies and other insect visitors, or create products such as hanging fragrance gardens or "patriotic" baskets to sell or donate.
Unlike conventional gardens where plants are, well, rooted in place, containers offer flexibility; you can move them to meet your students' needs or the plants' needs. And b

Going Organic is a way of life.
In the gardening world the big deal is going organic. In this modern day filled with fungicides, herbicides and insecticides organics seem like a complicated and new fangled idea. On the contrary, prior to the dawning of DDT, organics were the only way to garden. It is still possible to find a person today who could speak firsthand about an ancient way of life, where recycling meant using the horse manure in the vegetable garden. It was a time when good crop management practices kept garden pests at a minimum. Chickens in the garden fed on tomato hornworms and cabbage loopers. Nothing was wasted. Even egg shells and coffee grounds were reused as compost.

Container Gardening
Printer Friendly Version Even though the company has large outdoor trial gardens, I really enjoy planting a cheerful profusion of flowers and savory herbs in containers of all sizes and shapes on the patio outside my kitchen door. For many urban gardeners, container gardens on a small deck, patio or rooftop may be the only option available. Whether you have a little space or a lot, container gardening is an easy way to create an inviting and relaxing outdoor room, grow first-rate vegetables and add enjoyment to the summer season. Your garden area can be a patio, balcony, terrace, rooftop or any undeveloped site where the soil is not suitable for in-ground gardening. In fact, one of my favorite gardening pen- pals grows her eggplants in big pots on board the converted tugboat she and her husband live on! For those who do not have the time or whose physical capacities are limited, container gardening is a special source of satisfaction. If you are a cooking oriented gardener, you'll find having containers of your favorite culinary herbs really close at hand to snip at will is a real advantage.

Container Gardening
Gardening in containers is one of the most versatile and creative forms of garden design. Planting a container garden is much like creating a floral arrangement. However, live plants are enjoyed for a whole season. Almost any plant grows in a container when proper conditions are provided and adds a versatile splash of color and art wherever desired. Some other reasons for container gardening are as follows:
  • Your backyard or traditional gardening space is limited or unavailable.
  • Your time for gardening is limited.
  • Your mobility is limited to working in raised beds or containers.
  • Your gardening site is unsuitable for growing desired plants due to soil conditions, unsuitable sun or shade, or other environmental factors.
  • You have a desire to be a creative garden artist!
These are just some of the advantages with container gardening. The biggest disadvantages to growing plants in containers are the maintenance requirements of watering and fertilizing. Some helpful techniques, including choosing containers and growing media (potting mix), selecting plants, and planting, fertilizing, and watering your container garden, are discussed in this publication.

Introduction
If you have poor garden soil, limited space, not enough sun in the garden area, or impaired mobility, you may want to grow vegetables in containers. Containers allow you to have a movable garden with the opportunity for a limited vegetable supply, or a supplemental source of vegetables that are difficult to locate for purchase. Container gardening also affords better pest management and a chance to have color in areas where you want it. Container vegetable gardening is also a great way to introduce children to gardening. The downside of container gardening is that containers need frequent watering. Since the root system is restricted by the size of the container, some plants may produce smaller fruit, and some vegetables don't grow well in containers. Vegetables that grow well in containers are those with a confined habit of growth, such as salad greens, spinach, eggplant, Swiss chard, beets, radish, carrots, peppers, bush beans, determinate tomatoes, bush varieties of summer squash and cucumbers, green onions, and many herbs. It isn't that other vegetables can't be grown, but that they may not be as suitable for container culture.
Types of Containers
There are two main types of container materials, non-porous and porous. Examples of non-porous containers are glazed pots and those made of plastic, metal, and glass. Clay is the primary type of porous material. Wood and pressed fiber pots are considered semi-porous. When determining the type of container you want to use, consider the frequency of watering required, weight, and cost. Incidentally, decorative pots without drainage holes are unsuitable for container gardening.
