Conures
Sweet - Inquisitive - Playful
Conures are sweet, inquisitive, playful birds with beautiful eyes, like a deer. There are over 100 species of conures, but only a few are kept as pets. Some popular conures include the sun, jenday, mitred, dusky-headed, blue-crowned, white-eyed, golden-capped, peach-fronted, green-cheeked, maroon-bellied, slender-billed, the nanday and the larger Pantagonian conure.
They can all make great pets and many learn to talk . Prospective owners must be aware that most conures do have a loud, harsh voice at times. The smaller conures, including the green-cheeked and maroon-bellied are known to be quieter, communicating mostly with soft whistles. All conures like to chew and they should be provided with wooden toys to amuse them and satisfy their chewing desire.
They like toys and like most birds, because of their high intelligence, they need toys to keep them busy. In the wild, birds have so much to concern themselves with, including finding a mate, raising young and surviving on a daily basis. In our homes they still have the basic instincts they had in the wild, but because they are safe and do not need to spend energy on many of the things wild birds have to worry about, they need to be occupied... toys, food, a favorite person. Conures love to bathe and they like to dip their food in their water so it needs to be changed frequently.

Conures are native to most of South and Central America.
In general, they are part of a large group of parrots that range from small species of 8.5 inches in length (about the size of some of the parakeets) to 19 inches (larger than some of the smaller macaws) with most of them being in the 12 to 13 inch range.
They can be very colourful birds, in both appearance and personality. These birds have a never-ending source of energy. They are fun to watch because of their vibrant colours and acrobatic natures. They are pleasant and peaceful birds. Unfortunately, the voice of many Conures is not always pleasant – often consisting of bouts of loud screaming. Although not known for their talking abilities, many can develop good vocabularies, especially if handfed.
Green Cheek Conures, like my Griffin pictured here are among the smaller conures that are fairly common as pets. They are generally very quiet and even their speaking voice is almost a whisper. Sun Conures, like TJ who belongs to a member of the

Sun The sun conure possesses a multifaceted personality that will delight the experienced bird owner and pique the curiosity of the inexperienced nonbird person. They can best be described as curious, inquisitive, active and playful. They love attention and closeness from their owners.
Sun Conures are capable of learning to talk, although their range is limited and their voices are squeaky and birdlike. They like to imitate amusing sounds (microwave beeps, etc.). They really enjoy human attention, especially if there is no other bird around for them to groom and play with.
There is also another variation of the Sun Conure with a completely yellow tail(not pictured).
Queen Of Bavaria The Queen of Bavaria Conure or Golden Conure, a small member of the parrot family, is considered the most beautiful of the conures. They are a brilliant golden yellow with only the lower portion of the wings being green. They rather resemble a small macaw with a beak and head that is quite large, though they have a relatively short tail. The eye is brown surrounded by a naked white eye ring. The beak is a pale horn color and the legs are a light pink.
The young have green feathers in the plumage and the yellow is duller. They are fully feathered by 18 months of age.

CONURES
Depending on the species, these birds range from Central to South America. They have a reputation of being noisy, nippy, and destructive. They can also be very affectionate, entertaining and intelligent. They range in size from 9 to 18 inches. There are 42 species of conures. There are 13 classifications of conures. Aratinga which means little macaw, Nandayus, Ognorhynchus, Cyanoliseus, Leptosittaca, Conuropsis, Pyrrhura, Enicognathus, the newly formed Guaruba. Conures are a high energy bird and need to be kept busy. They need toys that they can chew and destroy, or they might decide to destroy your furniture or walls instead. They are not good talkers, though there are exceptions to this. Despite their reputation for being noisy, their personalities far outweigh their noise. They enjoy lots of attention and will in turn be affectionate. Some species, such as the sun conures, are extremely striking and beautiful. They are not sexually dimorphic and even by examining their behavior it is still difficult to determine their sex. Depending on the species, Conures can live 15+ years.

Conures
A Conure is one specific type of parrot that is commonly found in most parts of South and Central America. Wild Conures are friendly and peaceful birds that seldom fight with each other while pet Conures are also known for their sweet disposition and playfulness. However, Conures are noisy and almost all have loud voices with the exception of the small Pyrhurra Conures.
Conures as Pets
Conures are not picky about their food. They like a very varied diet and should be provided with foods that give a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors and textures. Colored pellets that come in different shapes are preferred over plain ones. Fruits and vegetables should always be a part of a Conure’s diet. Most of the food that are good for humans can be given to Conures, carefully avoiding those that contain a lot of salt, fat or sugar as they are unable to metabolize these items.
The Conure’s cage should be large enough to allow it to clamber around. Perch placement should be carefully considered to avoid rubbing the long Conure tails against the bars. The cage needs to have lots of toys for the bird’s entertainment. There should be toys that are allowed to be destroyed but the owner should make sure that there are no small parts that can be swallowed or openings that can catch a claw or beak. Conures would appreciate having a large play stand equipped with more toys. Cages can either be square or rectangular with horizontal bars to enable the birds to climb.

Green-cheek conures are the most common of the Pyrrhuras in captivity. They weigh about 70 grams and are 9-10 inches. These cuddly conures make great first time pets; as handfed babies they are easy to handle, love your attention and have the personality of a big bird in a little body. Conures have a reputation for being noisy, but the Pyrrhura green-cheeks are the quieter conures, making them wonderful pets for apartments and condos.
