Green Cheeks make wonderful PETS!
Why a Green-Cheek Conure? 8 reasons to own one! 1. They are not loud compared to other parrots and conures. They are in the Pyrrhura genus and make about one half the noise of a Sun or Jenday Conure which makes them ideal for condos or apartments. 2. They are small birds with big bird personalities! They play just like a large parrot or macaw - they will use their feet to hold things, roll on their back to play or sleep. They love to wrestle with and then be scratched by their favorite human. 3. They are easy to feed and not as destructive as a large parrot.

Sexually monomorphic i.e. difficult to determine sexes. Can be very noisy especially when they get excited. May upset neighbours with their noise. Demand a lot of attention from their owners. Destructive to timber. Attractive birds with the Sun Conure probably the best coloured of the more popular conures. They can be aggressive birds requiring only one pair per aviary and needing double wiring between aviaries. They will also accept suitably sized suspended wire cages. There are about 20 species of conures in Australia.

You may have been wondering why we named our site Parrot and Conure World when conures ARE parrots? Thats because there are parrots and then there are conure parrots! I guess there is no hiding that conure parrots are my favorite. They are such entertaining clowns and there are so many different pretty colors and personalities to choose from, you may want one of each. Just remember that the information here is general information. The personality and temperament of each bird depends on how the breeder cared for it, and how the owners have cared for it. Conures are always on the go. You can find them hanging with one foot on one toy while the other foot is on another toy while attacking yet another toy. Ours loved the shepherds hook that we hung toys from on top the cage. He would climb to the top, slide down fireman style yelling Weeeeeeee and then climb back up and start over. Some will lie on their backs in your lap and let you pet and preen them, or fall asleep in the crook of your arm. Ours would pick different people for different things. He let my daughter lay him on his back, let me preen his feathers on his head but would only let my husband give him treats.

      Conures
Conures species commonly kept as pets include sun conure, nanday conure, green cheeked conure, peach fronted conure, jandaya conure, white eyed conure, mitred conure, cherry headed conure, blue crowned conure, Patagonian conure, and crimson bellied conure.
      Endearing Conure Characteristics:
Conures have a variety of characteristics that make them charming. Quite often they will enjoy having their head scratched. Some conures will bury themselves in their owner’s shirts, jackets and sweaters. All that might be seen is a little head poking out. Some conures when aroused will sway or slowly move their head in a circle. This is thought to be associated with courtship. Although not as elaborate as a boinging caique, some conures have been known to hop up and down when excited. This can be put on cue for an entertaining trick. Conures will also sometimes bob their heads up and down as if they are nodding “yes” or dancing. This can also be put on cue.

The native habitat of conures is Central and South America. Most are green, with various shades of blue, red, orange, yellow and black. They are 9 to 21 inches in length from head to tip of tail. Many have been reported to live up to 35 years or more. Depending on the variety, conures reach sexual maturity at the age of 1 to 3 years. Conures are intelligent birds, with a reputation of being noisy and destructive. However, this does not apply to all individuals. Both sexes are known to talk and perform tricks, and are loving companions when acquired at a young age or if they were hand-fed. Conures are known as "miniature macaws" because of their strong resemblance to these larger birds.

    Orange-fronted Conure
Otherwise known as Half-Moon conure or Petz conure, it is the species which has been responsible for introducing many enthusiasts to the hobby. In the wild, it is found in Western central America from Mexico south to Costa Rica. About 9.5 inches in length, Commonly hand-reared, it is remarkable for the readiness with which it will accept its owner. Orange-fronted conures proved to be talented mimics and affectionate pets. some individuals can be noisy, but they are not particularly heavy chewers of aviary wood work. Orange-fronted conures prefer to nest deep inside arboreal termite mounds. Duplicating this situation in captive breeding setups is difficult and the birds often do not produce. When they do, the hand-fed babies make delightful pets.

CONURES Vital Statistics Body length: 9-12 inches Body weight (most): 80-200 grams Age of sexual maturity: 1-3 years Maximum life span: 35 years What to Expect from Your Conure Conures are usually gregarious, playful, animated birds that enjoy and seek attention. Some conures may be considered short-tempered, and their noise level can be irritating. The less common dusky and green-cheeked conures are somewhat quieter than the more familiar jenday, sun, mitred or half-moon conures. Conures generally have a cavalier attitude about investigating anything new in their environment; thus, they often suffer from injuries. These birds are generally poor talkers, but they can be very vocal in the early morning and late afternoon. Is Your Conure a Male or a Female? It is difficult to reliably distinguish a male from a female conure based on physical characteristics; therefore, endoscopy or laboratory methods must be used for sex determination in breeding facilities. Conures are prolific breeders and the offspring are easy to hand-raise. What Do Conures Do All Day?
