Our History
Fox's Feather Farm is the brainchild of Mark Fox who upon receiving his first baby bird at the age of 11 dreamed that one day he would be able to bring the same joy that he felt on that day to others. Over the time span of 40 years Mark has cultivated his flock of brilliantly colored parrots ever increasing his breeding stock to what it is today - over 150 species to choose from. Today we can easily state that Mark Fox is an expert in both the breeding of and caring for parrots. When you buy a feathered friend from Mark you also buy his 40 years of knowledge in the care and feeding of your new pet. At Fox's Feather Farm you can come and visit your baby bird. That way you can bond with your bird before he/she goes home.

What is a conure?
A conure is a small parrot that is native to South and Central America. There are many different species of conures and they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities. Conures are a popular pet parrot all over the world. "If you get any conure species, expect noise. Expect them to greet the morning sun and evening cool with fervor and joy. They will greet you with devotion and unconditional love - you owe them no less than your unconditional love in return." - Kate Fosberg

89. The Gold Capped Conure
Information about this species with a few pictures.
http://www.webtrek.com/~pkg/
The Gold Capped Conure
Welcome to the Gold Capped Conure page. This page contains useful information about the Gold Capped Conure, Aratinga auracapilla Warning: some information on these pages is not to be taken too seriously. The humor impaired should consult a friend who can separate fact from fiction.
Gold Capped conures are native to the coastal mountains of central coastal Brazil. They are endangered, primarily due to habitat destruction. Their importation into any country which has signed the CITES treaty governing trade in wildlife is strictly forbidden.
The Gold Capped conure is relatively common in aviculture in the United States. It breeds well in captivity, and hand fed, domestic bred babies are generally available. Gold Capped conures have a loud scream, and are boisterously loud at dawn and at their bedtimes. The Gold Capped conure is reputed to be less noisy than its Aratinga cousins, the Sun and Jenday conures.
Hand fed babies make good pets. Gold Capped conures like to cuddle with their owners and destroy toys. Gold Capped conures can learn to talk, but they have limited vocabularies and mumbly voices. As is the case with all pet birds, be aware that a bird is not a dog or a decoration. A pet bird is a commitment which will last longer than most marriages. You should select a companion parrot as carefully as you would select a spouse.
Dogs have been bred for millenium to be good companion animals. Parrots need to be taught how to be good companions. This requires patience and time. Parrots have emotional needs, and a parrot purchased for decorative purposes will be a very unhappy parrot.

Hi! I'm Riley the Green Cheek Conure.
I was born on April 28, 1996 in Mesa, Arizona. Mom gets alot of e-mail from people who want to get a green cheek conure like me.
So I figured that I should tell you what life is like with a little
green cheek conure.
I'm really very quiet, but sometimes I do make a little noise
(but nothing like those loud Sun or Nanday conures!).
I like to eat alot. I love berries. Grapes, corn and ZuPreem pellets
are good too. I also like to throw my food. Its just fun and birds gotta
have fun. Sometimes mom says that I am messier than both of the amazon parrots
that I live with. But, I have a full time maid (a.k.a. "mom")
and don't have to clean up after myself. I love bell toys. I can rip the clapper out of a bell in 30 seconds flat. Pretty good for such a little beak (and you should see what I can do to fingers!). I also like toys that I can throw. I'm very strong and like to play very rough. No one can get near my toys when I am playing with them. Sometimes I can be a little moody and bite. Ok, I bite often. But not all green cheek conures bite alot. I used to just bite anyone

Perch Talk Lets Talk!!
Endearing, charming, playful and personality plus packaged into a vibrant bundle of feathers.
Thats a sun conure!
The sun conure possesses a multifaceted personality that will delight the experienced bird owner and pique the curiosity of the inexperienced nonbird person. They can best be described as curious, inquisitive, active and playful. They love attention and closeness from their owners.
A flock of sun conures flying across an evening sky was once said to have resembled a beautiful sunset. Hence, the name sun conure was assigned to the species. The sun conure's body color possesses a yellow-orange glow with a distinct resemblance to gold. The brilliant blend of yellow, orange, red, blue and green colors means sun conures outshine most other birds in appearance.

Updates and Musings About Life with Parrots
Personality, Not Pity, Is the Key to Promoting Adoptions
November 4, 2010 Over at the Pet Connection Blog, Christie Keith points out a study that reinforces something a few of us have already known instinctively: posting pet adoption ads that scream of desperation Ann Brooks, founder of the parrot welfare organization Phoenix Landing, shared her thoughts on her attempts to change how people think of rehomed birds: We need to change our paradigm about pet birds, and the jargon that we use to describe their lives in captivity. If we can help people understand that rehomed birds come from bad AND good situations, perhaps people will be more likely to consider adoption first. We can all agree that animals should not live in neglect, and certainly many birds do. They certainly deserve better. However, I hope we can all begin to acknowledge that birds should not go from the good life to the bad either, just because they need a new home. My long-lived Phoenix will surely outlive me, and she deserves a safe and healthy new family as much as the bird that was dumped at the shelter. The best thing I can do to insure she has a good future is to help change our perception about why birds need new homes. http://www.phoenixlanding.org/

T a n ge r The Sun Conure About Tanger We recently acquired Tanger (short for "Tangerine") who is a year and a half old sun conure. He came from a house that had 4 dogs and 4 cats so he was a little jumpy and nervous at first. He's since calmed down fairly well and has taken to pestering Dusty for much of the time. Tanger appears to have raging male hormonal influx syndrome (a.k.a. puberty) . He gets amorous around Dusty, but she won't have anything to do with him and generally gives him a good bite on the tongue if Tanger gets too fresh.
Together (relatively peacefully) We're working on potty training him and he's coming along nicely with that. Tanger seems to be a more hands-on bird than Dusty and is quite the acrobat.

Nandays
Nothing in my life prepared me for living with a nanday. The day we went to pick up our first nanday I was thinking in lines of a cage bird like a canary. What we got was something more like a cross between a puppy and a toddler, So bright, so wonderful , so full of fun and OH SO LOUD! But the screams were nothing compared to the love that flowed from this bird. He became my best friend and constant companion. My Zorro bird. Here I will tell you stories about his adventures and about a tragedy that almost took him from me. So here is to my Zorro. The best bird I have ever met.
How Zorro came to be
My mother-in-law had passed away from cancer. It was a quick illness
taking her in a matter of three months. She had lived ten miles away from
us. Almost every day we saw her and she was such a strong part of our
lives.
Almost broke because of the time we had taken off from work to be with
her, there would be few summer activities. We were all depressed and the

97. Gracie
The story of a handicapped Nanday.
http://www.angelfire.com/tx/iluvbirds/gracie.html
Amazing Grace
Gracie A Very Special Nanday Conure
This is Gracie's story, a sad story because it occurs too often, but fortunately for Gracie, one with a happy new beginning. Gracie is a 1 1/2 year old physically challenged Nanday Conure. Her right foot does not grip properly and she has a nervous condition which makes Gracie's head wobble when challenged with even a simple new task. I first met Gracie at a local pet store where her previous owner, had just minutes before my arrival, sold her and left. Her excuse was one that we hear all to often "I just do not have time for this bird any more". When I first spotted Gracie she was clinging franticly to the sides of her cage, sad little eyes searching for the one who left her behind. I removed Gracie from her cage in order to offer her some sort of comfort. That is when I noticed that Gracie was not right. Her one foot did not grip properly and her little head wobbled when she tried to cling to me. I spoke softly to Gracie and this seemed to calm her. That day I left the pet store in tears. Tears for Gracie and all the other little birds that unfortunately suffer at the hands of people who just do not have time for this bird any more. For about a month I visited Gracie as much as I could. I watched as people passed her by for the "perfect younger birds". The only information I could gather about Gracie's history was that she was purchased at a local pet fair (Corpus Christi, TX) from a local breeder (Band ID is JB tx 3) and was always fed a standard parrot mix. I seriously doubt that the breeder ever discosed Gracie's disability to the unsuspecting buyer. Unfortunately for Gracie she was improperly raised by an uncaring, unknowledgeable, out to make a buck breeder who sold Gracie to an individual who knew less than they did about proper avian nutrition and care. Seeing Gracie was hard for me, but I felt she needed someone in this world who cared enough to stop and spend some time with her. The pet store owner and staff did all they could do for Gracie, but with a business to run, individual one-on-one time for Gracie was limited. Gracie needed a home.
