The people are broadly divided into two groups - those from the northern Cooks speaking Pukapukan whose descendents came from Samoa and Tonga to the west, and those from the southern Cooks speaking Rarotongan whose descendants came from The Society Islands and Marquesas to the east. The indigenous people, commonly known as Cook Island Maoris, also share their Polynesian ancestry with New Zealand Maoris (New Zealand was settled by Cook Islanders) and Hawaiians. more about Cook Island history dance church vaka canoe arutanga village Cook Island society is based on an association to a village and its chief. Chiefly titles, ariki, and land rights are passed through both the male and female lineage but to the discretion of the senior family member. Therefore, a disgraced family member may be given no land at all, whilst the favoured one will often win the prized family land. Land cannot be bought or sold and as most islanders want land on Rarotonga, it is common for those on the outer islands without land rights on Rarotonga to try to marry someone who does have land rights on Rarotonga.

    Cook Islands
Cook Islands history Since the Polynesian emigration of the 6th century, the Cook Islands have been home to people travelling across the ocean. Many journeyed from Samoa and Tonga to live on the northern islands. And only two hundred years ago, the European and British explorers stumbled across the islands. Each island has its own history and traditions. Pukapuka and Rakahanga were sighted by the Spanish. Captain James Cook landed on the southern islands. Rarotonga, the capital of the Cook Islands, was discovered during an expedition from Australia and New Zealand. Later, the missionaries landed on Aitutaki and began their work converting the Islanders to Christianity. Much of these endeavours ended in violence but today the people of the Cook Islands still follow Christianity. Now the Cook Islands has its own government and economy. In 2006, the television show Survivor: Cook Islands brought this beautiful region to the world stage. Thousands of visitors every year experience the culture, history and food unique to this part of the world. The weather is perfect and the beaches unspoiled. And the people are understandably proud of what they have built in their corner of the South Pacific.

About Us Rarotonga Primary Schools Culture Festival The Rarotonga primary schools culture festival is a bi-annual event that brings all schools on the island together in a celebration of Cook Islands Maori culture. The event is non competitive focusing instead on entertaining the guests, having fun and more importantly showing others just what schools are doing in terms of teaching the Cook Islands culture. The 2008 festival carried the theme “Taporoporo ia to tatou aorangi, no te uki ki mua (Conserve our environment for our future generation)” and a total of 12 schools joined in. Prime Minister and Minister of Education Jim Marurai officially opened the event and said it was great to see the children valuing our culture not only because they are our future generation but also because our culture is a part of our identity as Cook Islanders. The festival proved to the hundreds who packed the national auditorium that our culture is alive and well. The next event will be held in 2010. Photos by Tara Carr Top Row

Radio Cook Islands was set up in the 1970s by the Government of the Cook Islands broadcasting on AM 630kHz. It uses a 5kW transmitter but this has had to be cut in half due to power costs. The station is heard via AM all over Rarotonga, the Southern Group islands and in the Northern Group only by car radio's with wires strung between coconut trees. It is also streamed over the Internet to be rebroadcasted via the FM stations on each island. So each island is able to receive the station three ways (AM, FM, Internet streaming). Radio Cook Islands was privatised in 1996 only to go back to Government in December 1998. It was then re-tendered and acquired by Elijah Communications in March 1999. Radio Cook Islands has had to undergo much change since it was acquired by Elijah particularly on the financial side, resources both human and technical and towards the end of 2000 improving its content. Radio Cook Islands has decided to continue its commitment as the national station of the Cook Islands in the absence of a public service broadcaster.

    Cook Islands Culture
Cook Islanders are renowned as a friendly, outgoing people who retain a strong sense of their heritage and traditional ways. As a nation, Cook Islanders have a huge talent for and love of music and song, and are famous throughout the Pacific for their dancing. Dancers often wear outfits made from the many natural fibres found in the Cook Islands including kiriau – fibre from the young wild hibiscus tree, tapa (bark cloth), flowers, pandanus leaves, shells, feathers, kaka (fibre from the coconut tree) and rito (new and old coconut leaves).
Cook Islanders have successfully kept alive many aspects of their heritage and culture. Traditional arts and crafts are in regular use, from the woven pandanus mats, fans and baskets to the finely woven rito hats from the northern group. The Cook Islands are famous for their beautiful tivaevae (an applique and embroidery quilt made by local women) and for their flower art. Woodcarving is widely practised, and the phallic god Tangaroa is a popular theme. Visitors can learn about Cook Islands culture at the museum at Avarua, which has displays of traditional crafts and tools. The Cook Islands Cultural Village at Arorangi is another good place to witness traditional arts, crafts and dances in action.

      Introduction
INDIVIDUALITY between islands is the hallmark of the culture of the Cook Islands and reflects their varied sources of ancient migration as well as the vast distances between 15 tiny islands scattered over a section of the central South Pacific Ocean as big as the Indian sub-continent.
However, there are some common threads. All the islands employed a chiefly system based on traditional legends of migration and settlement. These stories enshrined the power of the chiefs as inheritors of what might be termed an "heroic" culture.
From time to time theories have been advanced that Polynesian culture before European contact was similar to that of the heroic period of Greece, that is, pre-dating Homer around 1200 BC. Some of these parallels include the concept of ' mana ', kinship, feasting and the giving of food, attitudes towards women and the lack of individualism.
