James Cook
James Cook was born in the Yorkshire village of Marton on October 27, 1728. His first experience at sea came at the age of 18 when he signed on as a deckhand aboard a Whitby collier carrying coal to London. He became an accomplished mathematician in his spare time and was actually offered a command of his own ship but refused and joined the Royal Navy as a seaman. His talents were soon recognized and after two years he became master of his own ship, the PEMBROKE , and was ordered to chart the waters of the St. Lawrence River in Canada. His work was masterful and the Admiralty recalled him to England and placed him in command of the ENDEAVOUR which was to take a number of scientists to the Pacific Ocean for observance of Venus. The ENDEAVOUR departed England in 1768 and after visiting Tahiti the following year he discovered New Zealand and claimed it for Great Britain. Sailing west, in 1770 he sighted the east coast of Australia. From here he sailed north and on August 22 he claimed the whole of eastern Australia as a British possession. The ENDEAVOUR returned to England in 1771 having added significantly to Britain's potential empire in the Pacific.

James Cook: British Explorer
James Cook (October 27, 1728 - February 14, 1779) was a British explorer and astronomer who went on many expeditions to the Pacific Ocean, the Antarctic, the Arctic, and around the world. Cook's first journey lasted from August 26,1768 to July 13, 1771, when he sailed to Tahiti on the Endeavor in order to observe Venus as it passed between the Earth and the Sun (this is called the transit of Venus, when Venus is visible as a small black dot moving across the Sun; the time of transit was used to calculate a more accurate distance between the Earth and the Sun). Cook was also searching for a large, southern continent that was thought to exist (but does not). Many scientists accompanied him on the voyage, including the botanist Joseph Banks. During this expedition, he sailed from Plymouth, England, to Brazil, around Cape Horn (the southern tip of South America), and to Tahiti (April 11, 1769), where he stayed for months in order to observe the

Captain Cook's Endeavour May Have Been Found off Rhode Island
Several news agencies are reporting that four British ships used during the United States Revolutionary War have been found off the coast of the state of Rhode Island. The archaeologists have identified one ship, the "Lord Sandwich," which was reportedly once the Cook's Endeavour. The ships were intentionally sunk by the British to prevent French takeover of the ships to aid the Americans.

Cook, James Printer Friendly Version Cook, James, explorer (b near Marton, Eng 27 Oct 1728; d at Kealakekua Bay, Sandwich Is [Hawaii] 14 Feb 1779). The greatest navigator of his era, he served as master of the Pembroke at the siege of LOUISBOURG (1758) during the SEVEN YEARS' WAR . He charted part of Gasp and helped prepare the map that enabled James WOLFE's armada to navigate the St Lawrence River. He was a painstaking surveyor, and was chiefly responsible 1763-67 for mapping the intricate and treacherous coast of Newfoundland, which England acquired at the end of the war; he had charted part of its east shore in 1762, including St John's harbour. Cook revolutionized Europe's knowledge of the South Pacific in his great circumnavigations 1768-71 and 1772-75. In July 1776 he began a third voyage, to search for a NORTHWEST PASSAGE . He sailed east across the Pacific and anchored in NOOTKA SOUND , on Vancouver Island (29 March 1778). His men repaired his ships and carried on a lucrative trade with the Nootka for otter pelts. He departed 26 April 1778 and sailed into Bering Strait in search of the passage, retreating in the face of a wall of ice. He was killed in the Sandwich Islands in an altercation with the local people. Cook was not the first to explore the NORTHWEST COAST , but he and his men were the first to reveal its attractions, particularly the FUR TRADE . Among those who followed was George VANCOUVER , who had sailed with Cook on his second and third voyages.

      Discovery and Exploration
The European exploration of Australia encompasses several waves of seafarers and land explorers. Although Australia is often said to have been discovered by Royal Navy Lt. (later Captain) James Cook in 1770, he was merely one of a number of European explorers to have sighted and landed on the continent prior to English settlement, and he did so 164 years after the first such documented encounter. Nor did the exploration of Australia end with Cook; explorers by land and sea continued to survey the continent for many years after settlement. [ Wikipedia
      Pre European Settlement
Although it is possible that the Portuguese Luis Vaez de Torres and Pedro Fernandes de Queirós could have sighted Australia in 1605, the first documented and undisputed European sighting (and landing) of Australia was in 1606, by the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon aboard the Duyfken ... The most significant exploration of Australia in the 1600s was by the Dutch. [
