COPY EDITORS
Copy editors check all the written material that goes into magazines, books, newspapers, and web sites. They look for spelling, grammatical, usuage, style errors and correct them. Sometimes a copy editor is a full-fledged journalist or doubles as a fact-checker. There are instances where a copy editor has the freedom to re-write the copy to fit the style standard of the publication. They can also write headlines and captions that describe the text and photos. The copy editor can also be part of a team that helps layout the publication. There are also Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM) copy editors. Most copy editors have a journalism or English background. They need to see themselves as the last door before the written piece goes out to the public. The good copy editor can cut out the fat in a manuscript, suggest changes for clarity, and work with a writer to produce a better product. Copy editing requires a complete knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, and various copy editing marks. It requires knowledge of the major style books. Copy editing is a valuable skill to have. There is always a market for it. After some experience a copy editor can try the freelance route and take on a variety of projects.

Tax Deductions That U.S. Freelancers Should Be Taking
Right now, I'm busy with final preparations for a presentation on how freelancers can benefit from their online presence that I'll be making this weekend. Meanwhile, take a look at this piece from Grant Dobbins on income tax deductions that self-employed editorial freelancers should be taking. Check with your accountant for even more ideas on tax deductions.

Medical Publishing and Full Disclosure of Editing Assistance
In medical publishing, one of the hot issues now is transparency, or full disclosure, regarding any possible conflicts of interest. It's my stance that as part of transparency, researchers should always disclose to peer-reviewed medical journals that they have contracted with self-employed medical copyeditors to polish their manuscripts before submissions. Journals are requiring authors to disclose any potential conflicts of interest, such as whether they received funds, equipment, or other assistance to conduct the research that they are reporting or whether they act as spokespersons for or have a financial stake in the manufacturers of any equipment or medication used in their research. This is because the results of a study on the effects of a particular drug, for example, could be viewed as biased (or, worst-case scenario, perhaps even manipulated) if the drug's manufacturer funded the study or assisted the authors in writing the study report. But if such assistance isn't disclosed, readers won't know that the study results might have been manipulated by researchers who are grateful to the manufacturer for the assistance.

Copyediting-L
Copyediting-L is a list for copy editors and other defenders of the English language who want to discuss anything related to editing: Sticky style issues; philosophy of editing; newspaper, technical, and other specialized editing; reference books; client relations; Internet resources; electronic editing and software; freelance issues; and so on. Carol Roberts started the list at Cornell University in December 1992 and passed ownership of the list to Beth Goelzer Lyons. Bill Blinn and Jane Lyle are the current list owners. We have two lists: Copyediting-L is the main list (topics such as politics, religion, sex, and operating-system evangelism are forbidden) and the "chat" list, Copyediting-off-list-L (where all topics are permitted). Subscribing to the off-list requires that you have subscribed to the main list. Both lists explicitly forbid personal attacks and commercial posts.
