Costa Rica Geography
Costa Rica, with 51,100 sq. km, is the second smallest Central American country. This mountainous country is located between the Caribbean Sea to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West. Positioned on the Central American Isthmus 10˚ North of the Equator and 84˚ West of the Prime Meridian. It borders Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south and is therefore situated in the midst of the Tropics. Costa Rica has close to 1,300 km (800 mi) of coastline. The Pacific Coastline with more of a mountainous terrain makes up roughly 80% of the total coastline. Caribbean Coastal Areas are characterized by long sand beaches, humid, lower ocean tide variations, and often times swamps and mangroves. The Pacific Coastline on the other hand is characterized by lagoons and hills to high cliffs reaching into the sea, large tidal variations, rain forest to dry forest to the north which are due mainly to the Papagayo Winds.   The Pacific Coast is distinguished by two large peninsulas reaching out into the sea.  The northern and larger peninsula is called Peninsula de Nicoya and is home to the dry forest. The southern and smaller peninsula is called Peninsula de Osa and is home to the

Costa Rica Geography
Costa Rica is the second smallest country in Central America after El Salvador. The country lies between Nicaragua and Panama and has coastlines on the Caribbean and the Pacific. A low, thin line of hills between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific is prolonged into northern Costa Rica, broadening and rising into high and rugged mountains in the center and south. The capital city, San Jose, lies in a central basin set in these highlands. Both coasts have lowland areas. The sparsely inhabited east coast has a narrow swamp strip and tropical forests as the terrain slopes inland. The Pacific coast has two peninsulas: the mountainous Nicoya peninsula in the north and the lowland Osa peninsula in the south. A rich lowland savannah patched by deciduous forests stretches along the Pacific coast between the two peninsulas. Costa Rica's weather is influenced by altitude. The Pacific coast is drier while the Atlantic coast has the most rainfall - about 300 days a year. The temperature in San Jose ranges from a high of 75-80 degrees (F) to a low of 58-60 degrees (F). The wet season is from May to October. The hottest months are March and April. info@buyincostarica.com

The Cordillera de Tilarán runs into the Cordillera Central, which includes the famous Volcán Poas (2704 meters) and Volcán Irazu (3432 meters), both of which are semi-active volcanoes lying at the center of national parks named after them, and Volcán Barva (2906 meters), which is in Parque Nacional Braulio Carillo. The most south-easterly mountains are associated with the Cordillera de Talamanca which is higher, geologically older, more remote and more rugged than the other ranges. About 16 separate peaks reach in excess of 3000 meters, the highest being Cerro Chirripó (3820 meters). Changing altitudes plays an important part in determining geographical, climatic and ecological variation. The Central Valley In the center of the highlands lies the meseta central (the Central Valley), which is surrounded by mountains (the Cordillera Central to the north and east, the Cordillera de Talamanca to the south). It is this central plain, between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level, which contains four of Costa Rica's five largest cities, including San José, the capital. Over half the population lives on this plain, which contains fertile volcanic soils. The Caribbean and Pacific Coasts On either side of the volcanic central highlands lie coastal lowlands which differ greatly in character. The smooth Caribbean coastline is 212 kms long and is characterized by year-round rain, mangroves, swamps, an intercoastal waterway, sandy beaches and small tides.
