50,000,000 BC The Cretaceous Era. Costa Rica is part of the ocean floor. 3,000,000 BC As the volcanoes continue to erupt, the space between the islands fills in and eventually an unbroken land bridge between North and South America is formed out of the volcanic islands. This land bridge between two great continents is in large part responsible for the incredibly high biodiversity found in an area as small as Costa Rica. The other prominent factor that explains the country's tremendous variety of flora and fauna is the range of climatic conditions that result from the changes in temperature and rainfall as one goes up and over the mountains. Additionally, while the Cocos plate submerges even further, sea-floor sediments are scraped off of the edge of the subduction zone, and turn into wedges of sedimentary rocks that are piled upon the coast of the growing continent 20,000 BC Probably before this date people were living in the area.

Costa Rica History
Like much of the Caribbean, Central America and the United States, Costa Rica was first "discovered" by that intrepid explorer, Christopher Columbus. Of course, Costa Rican history does not begin in 1502 with the arrival of a curious Italian working for Spain. As you would expect, there were indigenous people living in Costa Rica for years before Europeans ever set foot near the place. The country was christened Costa Rica, or Rich Coast, by a Spanish explorer when he noted the gold headgear the Indians were wearing when they came to meet the visitors. Fortunately for you, Costa Rica was very much unlike its fellow Central American colonies in that it lacked both gold and a large Indian population. The Spaniards were interested in accumulating wealth as quickly as possible and Costa Rica just didn’t have the resources. This resulted in the country being far less exploited than its more endowed neighbours. It was settled by a relatively small number of farmers and the wealth and land was distributed evenly throughout the country. Costa Rica was transformed in the nineteenth century by the introduction of coffee farms. The large quantity of tenable land gave the country a distinct advantage over its neighbours and the foreign investment and increased export revenues resulted in a solid infrastructure that is still in place today. The relatively small original Indian population was rapidly depleted by small pox when the Spanish first arrived so there was very little of the Indo-Latino tension that caused class wars in other Central American countries. This political stability is another characteristic that has lasted through the years.

Costa Rica History
People have inhabited the land, which is now Costa Rica, for at least 11,000 years. Relics left behind show the importance of Costa Rica as a bridge between North and South America. Influences from both regions can be found throughout its rich history. The northern region of Costa Rica was dominated by Chorotegas, which are believed to be related to the Maya. Many different tribesmen lived in the southern part of the region. Some of which were the Carib, Boruca, and the Corobicis. Columbus landed rear by the present day town of Limon on September 8th 1502 on his final quest to find a passage to India. Captain Gil Gonzalez organized the invasion of Costa Rica "rich coast" in 1522. His men collected enough gold to make the name "Costa Rica" stick. Juan Vasquez de Coronado founded the settlement of Cartago in 1563. Coronado organized expeditions and explorations around the country and could be considered Costa Rica's true conqueror. Even though Costa Rica's land was fertile, production and exportation of crops was difficult in Costa Rica because of the lack of native slaves, rugged terrain, mountains, and active volcanoes. The colonial times were harsh for Costa Rica. Plantation owners were forced to work their own crops. Many politicians encouraged the farming of coffee, which eventually did become a strong export for Costa Rica.

Costa Rica : History
In 1502, on his fourth and last voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly three centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture. With more than 2,000 dead, the 44-day civil war resulting from this uprising was the bloodiest event in 20th-century Costa Rican history, but the victorious junta drafted a constitution guaranteeing free elections with universal suffrage and the abolition of the military. Figueres became a national hero, winning the first election under the new constitution in 1953. Since then, Costa Rica has held 15 presidential elections, the latest in 2010. Sources:

Costa Rica has been known for its dedication to culture and education. The army was abolished in 1948 after a bloody civil war which began when the population felt there had been electoral fraud. COSTA RICA HISTORY
Lost in the records of Costa Rica history is this exchange. “Honey, why do you get to have all the fun and go to Costa Rica?” “Hey, I’m making history here!” Yep, even Columbus had some marital frustrations. The history of Costa Rica begins with Christopher Columbus. OK, not so much. Turns out, there were already people here but, to us Westerners, a story is always better when we can say we discovered something. Maybe not.
The Lost City
If there’s something we Westerners like better than discovering someplace new, it’s finding a Lost City. Think about it. What movie did you like most? “1492” (bet you never saw it) or “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (bet you did)? We all know about the lost Aztec and Maya cities. But, did you know that just two hours’ from San Jose lies a city hidden in the rainforest? Maybe 10,000 or even 25,000 people lived here for at least 2,500 years before Columbus "discovered" the rich coast. Gee whiz, looks like there’s some

Heritage and Culture
Costa Rican culture is in many ways a reflection of its racial diversity. The predominant influence has long been European, which is reflected in everything from the official language Spanish to the architecture of the country's churches and other historic buildings. The indigenous influence is less visible, but can be found in everything from the tortillas that make part of a typical Costa Rican meal, to the handmade ceramics sold at roadside stands.
An important aspect of Costa Rica's cultural legacy is their love for peace and democracy. The Ticos like to stand out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, where military dictatorships have long dominated politics.
They take pride in having more than one hundred years of democratic tradition, and almost half a century without an army. The army was abolished in 1948, and the money the country saves by not expending in military issues is invested in improving the Costa Ricans' standard of living, which has fostered a culture of social peace that makes it such a pleasant place to visit.
The Ticos
The Ticos, as Costa Ricans are commonly known, are famous for their hospitality, and are quite happy to live up to their reputation. They are well-educated and hard working people, who are quick with a

Costa Rica : History
Human habitation of Costa Rica dates from at least 5000 bc, but in comparison with the great civilizations of pre-Columbian America the Native Americans of Costa Rica were neither numerous nor highly developed. When confronted by Spanish soldiers and missionaries, they resisted violently. Those who did not succumb to the epidemics that swept over the isthmus either died fighting or fled to remote areas. The political jurisdiction of the captain general of Guatemala and the spiritual guidance of the bishop of León in Nicaragua, Costa Rica was ignored by both administrations. The absence of great mines meant the collection of few taxes from the Ticos, as Costa Ricans called themselves; accordingly Spain provided little help in developing the infrastructure of the province. In 1502 Christopher Columbus' fourth Atlantic voyage brought him to the shores of Costa Rica, where he remained for 18 days refitting his ships. Relations with the natives became friendly enough that they brought him a number of items of gold, possibly prompting Columbus to name the land “valuable Coast,” although there is some dispute over the origin of the name. Other more promising regions forced Spain to neglect the area, and the few Spanish colonists clung to the coast for 60 years. In 1564 the Spanish crown accomplished the Meseta Central village of Cartago as the first permanent settlement. Aljuela Province Cartgo Province Guanacaste Province Heredia Province ... Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture. The small landowners' relative poverty, the lack of a large indigenous labor force, the population's ethnic and linguistic homogeneity, and Costa Rica's isolation from the Spanish colonial centers in Mexico and the Andes all contributed to the development of an autonomous and individualistic agrarian society. An egalitarian tradition also arose. This tradition survived the widened class distinctions brought on by the 19th-century introduction of banana and coffee cultivation and consequent accumulations of local wealth. Costa Rica joined other Central American provinces in 1821 in a joint declaration of independence from Spain. Although the newly independent provinces formed a Federation, border disputes broke out among them, adding to the region's turbulent history and conditions. Costa Rica's northern Guanacaste Province was annexed from Nicaragua in one such regional dispute. In 1838, long after the Central American Federation ceased to function in practice, Costa Rica formally withdrew and proclaimed itself sovereign.

Few of the Indians survived the Spanish conquest, which began in 1563. The region grew slowly and was administered as a Spanish province. Costa Rica achieved independence in 1821 but was absorbed for two years by Agustín de Iturbide in his Mexican empire. It became a republic in 1848. Except for the military dictatorship of Tomás Guardia from 1870 to 1882, Costa Rica has enjoyed one of the most democratic governments in Latin America. In the 1970s, rising oil prices, falling international commodity prices, and inflation hurt the economy. Efforts have since been made to reduce reliance on coffee, banana, and beef exports. Tourism is now a major business. Oscar Arias Sanchez, who became president in 1986, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his role in negotiating settlements to both the Nicaraguan and the Salvadoran civil wars. José Maria Figueres Olsen of the National Liberation Party became president in 1994. He opposed economic suggestions made by the International Monetary Fund, instead favoring greater government intervention in the economy. The World Bank subsequently withheld $100 million of financing. In 1998, Miguel Angel Rodríguez of the Social Christian Unity Party became president, pledging economic reforms, such as privatization. In 2000, Costa Rica and Nicaragua resolved a long-standing dispute over navigation of the San Juan River, which forms their border. A psychiatrist, Abel Pacheco, also of the Social Christian Unity Party, won the presidency in elections held in April 2002. In May 2003, several national strikes took place, by energy and telecommunications workers over privatization, and by teachers over their salaries.
