    Costa Rica History
Mystery shrouds pre-Columbian Costa Rica: Few archaeological monuments and no proof of a written language have ever been discovered. Recorded history tends to begin with Christopher Columbus, who stayed for 17 days in 1502, and was so impressed by the gold decorations worn by the friendly locals he promptly dubbed the country Costa Rica, 'the rich coast'. Despite the lure of untold wealth, colonisation was slow to take hold and it took nearly 60 years for the Spanish settlers to make a dent in the tangled jungle. Once the process had started, however, Costa Rica, like its similarly-colonised neighbours, suffered the effects of European invasion. The indigenous population did not have the necessary numbers or organization to resist the Spanish, and their populations dwindled quickly because of susceptibility to European diseases. Adding to its initial ignominy, the hoped for hoards of gold never materialised and Costa Rica remained a forgotten backwater for many years. The 18th century saw the establishment of settlements such as Heredia, San Jos© and Alajuela but it was not until the introduction of coffee in 1808 that the country registered on the radars of the 19th-century white-shoe brigade and frontier entrepreneurs looking to make a killing. Coffee brought wealth, a class structure, a more outward-looking perspective, and most importantly independence.

From that moment began a period of catastrophic conquest, not only in terms of exploitation and violence, but also because of the diseases that came with the Europeans, like smallpox, measles or the flu, to which many of the indigenous population succumbed.
The conquest was hindered by lack of political coherence of the indigenous people and the anarchy among the invaders. However, the spread of slavery and human commerce in all only reinforced the civil and religious control of the region. During this time, the Atlantic region kept control of its people and land, thanks to its remote location through the harshness of its climate and the fierce resistance of its people.

Towards Independence Throughout the colonial period, Costa Rica remained one of the provinces ruled by the Spanish viceroyalty in Guatemala (together with the provinces of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua). Its position as the farthest province from the crown's representative and the fact that great mineral wealth was not discovered here meant that interest in this distant territory was minimal, which in turn allowed Costa Rica to develop in an atmosphere of relative autonomy not found in the other provinces of Central America. The provincial Governors were always Spaniards appointed by the monarchy, although once settled in the new territory they inevitably set about attending to their own personal interests rather than those of the province and its colonists. This practice was by no means limited to the province of Costa Rica but was apparently commonplace throughout the New World colonies, which lead to much discontent among the colonists.

Costa Rica History
In this page I would like to share with you the History of Costa Rica - the Costa Rica History. Costa Rica's History is unique. While sharing with its neighbors the experiences of colonial exploitation and commodity-export dependency, Costa Rica managed to rise above. Instead of recurring cycles of dictatorship and poverty, Costa Rica boasts an enduring democracy and the highest standards of living in Central America. What’s more when we look at Costa Rica History is that Costa Rica is unique among all nations for its unarmed political democracy and green economic revolution. Costa Rica History - The first European explorer to encounter Costa Rica was the Great Navigator himself, Christopher Columbus. The day was September 18, 1502, and Columbus was making his fourth and final voyage to the New World. As he was setting anchor off shore, a crowd of local Carib Indians paddled out in canoes and greeted his crew warmly. Later, the golden bands that the region's inhabitants wore in their noses and ears would inspire the Spaniard Gil Gonzalez Davila to name the country Costa Rica. Archaeologists now know that civilization existed in Costa Rica History for thousands of years before the arrival of Columbus, and evidence of human occupation in the region dates back 10,000 years. Among the cultural mysteries left behind by the area's pre-Columbian inhabitants is thousands of perfectly spherical granite bolas that have been found near the west coast.

Costa Rica History
Costa Rica was founded by Christopher Columbus on his fourth and last voyage to the new world in 1502. Already living in Costa Rica were four indigenous tribes. The Corucas, Chibchas, and Diquis lived in the south west region while the Caribs lived on the east coast. Tthe natives from the tribes either left when the Spaniards arrived or died from the disease smallpox. Colonists started to settle in this area in 1522.
After settlement, Spain was under a military Governor from the Captaincy General of Guatemala for three centuries. They called this area the Rich Coast because they thought it was full of gold. They found little gold and other minerals so they started to agriculture in the land.
