costuming tips, information, and resources for players with Dark Elven charaters in NERO International.

Costuming
Costuming is just as important as makeup for creating and immersing yourself in a Dark Elven character. While it is certainly not required, many Dark Elf players choose to dress in a Japanese or Asian style (either authentic or simply inspired by). This can range anywhere from formal kimonos and other such clothing to basic martial arts attire which will stand up well to the rigors of play. On the other end of the spectrum, some Dark Elven players choose costuming that is more basic and stick to simple swordsman shirts and wrap pants. In between you can mix and match to your heart's desire based upon your own preferences, budget, and your character's background. In the end, it's up to you in how intricate you wish your costuming to be. Whatever your choices, you should keep in mind that darker colors are often preferable as they will not show the makeup that rubs off of you as badly. You can also minimize this (and reduce the amount of makeup you need to use) by wearing a form fitting black undershirt (such as Under Armor other sportswear).
Sewing Your Own Costuming
Whether you do it yourself or have someone sew your costuming for you, going this route can often be more cost effective than purchasing off-the-rack costuming. You also have the added freedom of choosing the exact fabrics and colors you want, and can have pieces tailored to better fit your body which will improve the overall look.

From MiddleWiki
Jump to: navigation search The SCA is a participation organization (not a spectator one), therefore everyone is required to wear an "attempt" at pre-1600 costume to participate at an event . Naturally this makes costuming one of the most participated in of the Arts and sciences Some members of the society take offense at the term "Costume" as it implies something that is not normal wear or just for show and therefore prefer the term garb for medieval clothing, however the makers of garb still generally hold to the title of Costumer. There are several events dedicated to Costuming including the Known World Costume Symposium and in our Kingdom in particular the Golden Seamstress Competition has gained a lot of renown.
Contents
SCA and other Living History Groups
Unlike most Living History organizations, the SCA has no strict guidelines for authenticity in costume. The bylaws of the organization literally state that one must make "an attempt" at pre-1600 attire. Obviously, this "best effort" varies wildly from person to person based on their skills, connections and/or ability to purchase garb. This lax requirement to the most basic element of a person at an event (their outward appearance) has been both a boon and bane to the Society. It has been positive in that the "entry requirements" for new people are very low... most can cobble together a simple T-tunic or borrow one. In a pinch simple sweatpants and a blousy shirt belted at the waist will suffice for a man or woman. This has allowed the membership of the Society to increase at levels unheard of in other living history groups with much more stringent appearance regulations.

the Study Our main hobby is costuming. We keep everything related to it here. This includes our photo albums, resources, books and documentation. The making of costumes has been a great creative outlet, especially for Bruce. Having no real ability to draw, paint, etc., he's finally found something he feels competent at. He owes a lot of what he's learned to Nora's experience as a seamstress. If you're interested, you can read about how we got started costuming We work frequently separately but often get roped into stage groups or
SCLG group projects. The current SLCG project involves a genre called
"Steampunk" and we'll be actively participating in that.
Check the SLCG pages for more on the group project. We've been working on the back story for our characters in the

  • ABOUT US
    Costuming
Costuming is one of the most fun aspects of the EMP. When we have events and occasionally for weekly practices, we enjoy wearing the clothing of different times and cultures. The sky is the limit, with a preference of pre-1750 inspired styles. The term costume and garb are basically the same. Since people in the EMP make costumes for more than just a one time wearing like you might for a costume party, most people will refer to their outfits as garb. Since the EMP offers such a wide time range of available styles and cultures you can be as simple or complicated as you desire. A tunic and belt are perfectly acceptable as are complete Persian Court Attire. Some people enjoy wearing a variety of different types of garb. While others prefer to wear things from a specific time and place. Since the EMP goes about 150 years past most other medieval groups there is a lot more room for later period costuming. Many of our events are themed to a specific time and place. It is highly encouraged that you wear at least on outfit to fit the specific theme. In no way is it required however. Generally, in order to promote a certain theme there may be a prize for the best costume at that event. Site Map Site by Portent Interactive

The style of costume will depend on the style of dance and venue.
In NZ costumes can be broadly divided into Cabaret/Orientale, Folkoric/Ethic and Tribal.
'Cabaret' style costumes are often two piece and often show a lot of skin. The style of costume is less than one hundred years old but is what many people think of as a 'belly dancing costume'. - Further information will be provided in the near future.
'Folkloric' costume has a more covered look - often based on a tunic. When you can also identify where (and when) it was worn it become 'Ethnic'. However, much 'folkloric' costuming is pure fantasy - even allowing for jazzing things up for the stage. - Further information will be provided in the near future.
'Tribal' costuming is based on 'American Tribal Style'. The best known performers are Fat Chance Belly Dance. This costuming style unashamedly combines ideas from different cultures, continents, eras (and even species - those tassels are camel decorations!). The effect is very lush. - Further information can be found on the Tribal costuming pages

They could easily be cut apart and painted with silver or metallic fabric paint. I haven't done it yet, but I have been thinking of doing some dolls of a medieval nature and it was a thought. In one of the old DIM mags, there is a knight doll and they used lace for the chain mail. I'll have to find my old copy and see what it says. Dale Chain Mail Take a lace in the pattern you want and hang it up with clothes pins on a line out side and spray it with hobby silver...let dry and you got it..(may have to spray a couple of times). to make it stiff after it is cut and set to style you can use a fabric stiffener to make it firm. Ann K Chain Mail I just remember something I saw in Michael’s the last time I was there. They have a metal mesh that is bendable. It can be placed over objects and molded to that shape. I bet it would make cool chain mail for a larger doll. One word of warning. I read a friends post on another list that said it was really sharp and you should wear gloves when using it.

So you're starting to dance and thinking about costuming? Here are some hints to help you, and many of these will make costuming a bit less expensive. Dance Styles and Costumes.doc From Tribal to Cabaret - a great source of info, with pictures! Compiled by Zatarra. When it comes to costuming, it's a good idea to have a 'swatch bag' with samples of fabrics from costumes you already own. That way you can match colors when you buy or make items. Be sure to collect "stuff" in your favorite colors. If you're just starting out, pick one or two colors you like and either gold or silver as your accent. Some ideas of things to make with leftover pieces of fabric and trim, etc from your main costume pieces - chokers, wrist and ankle bands, arm bands, head bands, tummy drapes/midriff 'danglies' or covers, head wraps, turbans, camel trappings (tassels), tassels to add to necklaces, belts and bra tops. STUFF TO COLLECT:
RIBBONS -(even the wire edged ones - you can pull the wire out easily on most of them) all widths BUTTONS - some are really pretty. Button covers, too!
