Heather's Pages Home Costuming I spend time doing some light costuming in support of my historical re-enactment activities. I don't have a huge or fancy wardrobe, but I like to look nice and well put together. I'm getting a bit more of a taste for it from my friend Saragrace , we have some great pieces planned for the upcoming year. As our participation in SCA increases, I need to develop more of a wardrobe for extended events. I get a lot of ideas from books and artwork, Jennifer Thompson's Festive Attyre , and browsing through the hilarious and now reactivated Am I Period or Not site. Flemish Gown I constructed the Flemish Gown ensemble as part of a class that my friend Saragrace taught for our local SCA group. We had a lot of fun! The pieces I have finished so far are a smock, reversible kirtle, head scarf, outer gown, and a square-backed white partlet. Everything is made out of linen of various weights, from Fabric Store.com. Still to do: possibly a jacket (I know SG will be talking me into it, besides hers is too cool), a black partlet and some lengthening of the smock sleeves. Pictures can be seen here . Next outfit, I'll keep a journal.

    48. Ren Faire: Costumes
The outof-print English costuming in the Age of Elizabeth by Iris Brooke contains a number of lovely plates but little in the way of common workers.
    http://www.renfaire.com/Costume/index.html
    Elizabethan Period Costumes
Costumes Guide Terms Female ... References lothing during the reign of Elizabeth always reflected the social status of the wearer. There would be no doubt in ones mind about picking out the nobility in any given crowd. Clothing was a direct indication of wealth, much in the manner of imported suits in the present. The cost of clothing was related to the type of fabric and (in the days before synthetic dyes) the color. Purple dye was extracted by crushing thousands of tiny sea snails; similarly, crimson dye was obtained by crushing a certain type of beetle. Processed fabrics such as velvet or corduroy were costly, as were satins and other fine weaves. Cotton, although common in this day and age, was expensive and uncommon before the rise of the cotton gin. Harvested cotton was cleaned by hand, a lengthy and laborious process. Cotton was imported from India or the Americas with an associated high cost before taxation. Cotton was an expensive fabric up til the 1800s. Flax and wool were the more common fibres. Flax (a plant called flax) is made into linen, which while expensive now, wasn't when it was homespun. Wool yarn became wool fabric of all weights, including tweed which was woven wool fabric that had been beaten on one side while wet to form a wooly, wind-proof material.

    58. Costume Designers In Modern Film - By Michael E. Grost
Fact filled rundown and reference associates costumers with their trademark and specialty styles.
    http://mikegrost.com/costume.htm
Classic Film and Television Home Page This article discusses some of the top costume designers in film and television. All are contemporary workers. They represent only a fraction of current professionals in this field; they have been chosen for their originality and creativity. There are numerous links to other costume web sites at the huge The Costumer's Manifesto site. It has links to professional organizations, conventions, pages of current designers. A very good book on older costume designers of classic Hollywood is Elizabeth Leese, Costume Design in the Movies
    Historical Costumes
James Acheson James Acheson started out with various Monty Python movies, and Brazil directed by Python alumni Terry Gilliam. (The Python TV series was done by Hazel Pethig.) In recent years he has costumed Bernardo Bertolucci's spectacles, including The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, and Little Buddha. He has also done richly decadent looking costumes for such powdered wig era dramas as Restoration and Dangerous Liaisons. Rich use of color: bright reds in Restoration, orange in Bertolucci films. His work is oddly complementary in time and place to Beavan and Bright, either being set in a much earlier era than theirs (such as the 17th-18th Century) or in locations they have never visited (North Africa, China, Nepal). His work is with an edge, off-center, engulfing. Coleen Atwood Films set in the recent past (1950's - 1960's). Clothes have a humorous, tongue in cheek quality: look at those strange clothes people wore back then! Still very splashy and fun. Likes bright colors, humorously over-bright, in fact. Captures look of suburbia, middle class dreams of splendor, at once glamorous and hopelessly middle brow: see the rock clothes of That Thing You Do, evening wear in Ed Woods. Works extensively with Jonathan Demme (Married to the Mob, Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, That Thing You Do!) and Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Woods, Mars Attacks!). Older era historical films: Wyatt Earp, Little Women. Also: Love Field, Born Yesterday.
