St. Louis, MO, USA - Cotton farmers in Mexico first planted transgenic cotton crops in 1996, and have since reduced pesticide applications by more than 50 percent and generated annual benefits of US$27 million. In a brief and exclusive video made available today at the Conversations about Plant Biotechnology Web site, Mexican farmer and agronomist Javier DomƒÂnguez Arreola discusses the benefits that he and other farmers are realizing from transgenic crops.
"When I started, there was only one variety that was grown here. Transgenic cotton didn`t even exist at that time. We had some serious problems controlling pests," says DomƒÂnguez Arreola, who has been involved in cotton farming for more than 25 years. "It was much more laborious. We had to check the crop more often. We had to be more careful. "But with biotechnology, there is relief or comfort knowing there is protection against certain pests like the pink bollworm and others. We don`t have to check it all the time, because . we`re certain that the cotton is safe," continues DomƒÂnguez Arreola, who plants insect-protected transgenic cotton crops containing a protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) that protects cotton plants from specific lepidopteron insect pests.

GM COTTON CROPS COULD CUT PESTICIDE USE BY 75PCT.
      AsiaPulse News July, 2003
CANBERRA, July 31 Asia Pulse - Australia's cotton farmers could cut their pesticide use by 75 per cent by using genetically modified crop techniques, according to an industry group. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority today approved the use of Bollgard II cotton, a GM cotton that has two altered genes to protect it against the helicoverpa moth. Around 30 per cent of the nation's cotton crop is already genetically modified, with one gene altered to make it resistant to the moth. But CSIRO Plant Industry cotton breeder Greg Constable said Bollgard II could ultimately replace all other cotton varieties including the current GM variety, Ingard. "Three years of field trials show that Bollgard II is even better than...

Cotton crops near end of the season
David Bennett Aug. 10, 2001 4:00pm With the finishing line in sight — after pouring money, effort and sweat into a cotton crop — the last thing a farmer wants to do is mess his crop up just prior to harvest. To keep the crop on track as the season winds down, Bobby Phipps, Missouri Extension cotton specialist, says there are some key elements to pay attention to. Advertisement First, the water. If it's a hot, dry growing season — like last year was — don't expect defoliants to perform as well as they do during a less heated environment. “Last year, I saw a field where a farmer had put 50 pounds of nitrogen out in August. This was a worst-case scenario. The crop grew to about 6 feet tall with little cotton. When it gets in that condition, cotton grows like mad and slowing it down is nearly impossible. It takes a lot of defoliant,” says Phipps, who spoke at the Milan, Tenn., No-Till Field Day on July 26. Temperatures may help determine what defoliant is used. “Many farmers south of Missouri can use Dropp and it works very well. In our area, when it starts getting cold, the performance of that product lessens.”
