(NaturalNews) The wide scale adoption of genetically modified (GM) cotton crops in China has led to an explosion of insect pests, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and published in the journal Science
"This is a massive issue in terms of the environment, but also in terms of costs for the farmer," said Kirtana Chandrasekaran from Friends of the Earth. "The plan with GM crops was to reduce costs and environmental impact, but neither of these things seem to be happening, because over time, nature takes its course, and that was bound to happen. The supposed benefits in yield can be cancelled out by unintended consequences like this."

Rapeseed production this year may fall to less than 10 million metric tons to the lowest level since 2007, Li Qiang, managing director at Shanghai JC Intelligence Co., said today in an interview. Output will probably be the lowest since 2007, when China produced 8.6 million tons, he added. Output was 11 million tons last year, he said. Heavy snow in western Gansu province this week destroyed local crops and killed livestock, Chinanews.com said today, citing the local government. Snowfalls also hurt cotton crops in Xinjiang province and caused replanting in the biggest producing state, the China Cotton Association said this week. “We are off to a pretty bad start to the spring,” Mao Shuchun, cotton researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said in a telephone interview from central Henan province today.

Cotton crops devastated by herbicide
Tuesday, 20/01/2009 Cotton farmers across the eastern states say crops are being devastated by a herbicide that's drifting from nearby cereal farms. Cotton is currently in its growing phase in Queensland and New South Wales, but grain crops are harvested and now those farmers are using a phenoxy herbicide to spray for weeds. CEO of Cotton Australia, Adam Kay says it appears some farmers are not using the herbicide with caution and its drifting by up to 10 kilometres onto cotton crops and costing the industry millions in damage. "Look it seems to be right across the industry, particularly bad in the Namoi and Gwydir Valleys," he says. "When it drifts onto a crop it causes malformation of the crop and the leaves and so at this early we have had at least $5 million worth of losses and we're still having incidences reported every day."

Farmers Hope Cotton Crops Survive Flooding
Hundreds Of Acres In Jeopardy
Katrina Webber , KSAT 12 News Reporter POSTED: Wednesday, September 8, 2010 UPDATED: 4:06 pm CDT September 8, 2010 MEDINA COUNTY, Texas Cotton farmers in Medina County stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars due to flooding from Tropical Storm Hermine which has soaked their crops. Watch Katrina Webber's Report Heavy rains that fell late Tuesday and early Wednesday left many of the farms along FM 2790 between Lytle and Lacoste underwater. Kohlleppel said most of the cotton was due to be harvested over the next few weeks. He said he spent the past few days working long hours in order to pick most of his crop before the storm hit. However, about 400 acres of cotton worth about $400,000 on land he manages for others remains in the field and is still in jeopardy. Many of his neighbors also stand to lose a lot of money.

    Controlling pests in cotton crops
Three CSIRO cotton researchers have received a prestigious 2006 ATSE Clunies Ross Award for their innovative work which combines genetic modification with conventional methods to control the Helicoverpa armigera moth, which lead to a 25-fold reduction in the use of pesticides. And in Arizona, Professor Tim Dennehy head a team whose research focuses on the development of pest management programs in cotton crops.
    Transcript
Robyn Williams: May has been a big month for GM cotton. A Clunies Ross award and a paper from Arizona in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in America saying Bt cotton is working very well. Tim Dennehy of the University of Arizona explains what the Bt stands for. Tim Dennehy: Bacillus thuringiensis , which is the genus and species of the bacterium naturally occurring that is very commonplace in soil, and this is the bacterium, the organism from which the Bt toxin that's incorporated into the plant, was derived. Robyn Williams: So you're taking the poison capacity from the germ and just transplanting its gene into the cotton plant itself, and it absorbs that as part of its DNA and then produces it almost naturally.
