Overview Why fakes are booming What you can do Counterfeit quiz
January 2008 Real or fake? Counterfeit merchandise can threaten your safety and fund crime
We help you tell the bogus from the bona fide. (The products pictured here? All fakes.)
Because today's fakes are not just the usual knockoffs, you need to take special precautions when you shop.
A widespread problem
"If they make it, they fake it," says Caroline Joiner, executive director of the Global Intellectual Property Center, run by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "Every product in every industry is vulnerable."
Fakes include truly unsafe merchandise. Investigators have seized brake pads made of kitty litter, sawdust, and dried grass; power strips, extension cords, and smoke alarms with phony Underwriters Laboratories (UL) marks; medical test kits that give faulty readings; toothpaste made with a chemical found in antifreeze; and cell-phone batteries that could explode. Online drugstores claiming to operate from Canada but actually based in other countries have peddled "Lipitor" and "Celebrex" pills stored under uncontrolled conditions and containing the wrong active ingredients.
That's just for starters. Among the counterfeit merchandise is some you would suspect: handbags, clothes, watches, and amusingly renamed colognes such as Essey Miyami instead of Issey Miyake. But there are also surprising fakes: golf balls, oil filters, and baby formula, for example. With some, the low price is a giveaway (a $2,000 Prada purse for $35?). Others are priced close to retail to fool you.

Counterfeit merchandise business booming in Africa
by Marco Chown Oved ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast - The bright orange Ivory Coast jerseys hanging outside a little sewing shop in downtown Abidjan look just like the real thing, complete with the national team crest, the embroidered Puma logo, and even the shadow elephant head over the right shoulder.
But the $5 price tag betrays the shirt for what it is - a very convincing fake.
In the lead up to the World Cup, the counterfeit merchandise business is booming. South African police say they have seized more than 100 million rand ($13 million) worth of fake merchandise since the beginning of the year. FIFA says more than 100 cases involving counterfeit World Cup goods have been brought to court.
At a sports apparel store in Abidjan recently, official Ivory Coast jerseys were being sold for 39,900 francs ($75), which is more than the average Ivorian makes in a month. With a wildly popular national team, the demand for cheaper jerseys in Ivory Coast has spurred an entire counterfeit industry.

zSB(3,3) Maybe you can't afford the real thing. Or perhaps you think you deserve a bargain. So you head off to an online auction or a street corner to buy a fake handbag. After all, the fakes (also called copies, knockoffs, replicas and counterfeit goods) now are so good that even pros have trouble telling the difference. You get the bag/shades/shirt/watch that you wanted and saved hundreds of dollars. What's the harm?
Why buying counterfeits are a bad idea
According to the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC) about 18% of the $98 million of counterfeit products seized by U.S. Customs in '02 were made up of fashion-related items: apparel, sunglasses, watches, handbags and headwear. While it's not a crime to buy counterfeit merchandise (only to sell it), there are legitimate reasons why you should rethink your buying tactics according to the IACC:

Average people are in the stores buying the real stuff. Why? Rich people are smart and want to save money since they get the prestige of having the real thing since they know that no one will challenge them. Regular people want to look rich, but others will always wonder whether their stuff is fake. Reply Illusion-of-the-Mind says: 09/22/2005 at 6:53 pm
