The main forms of country dancing are: circle dancing, longways set, square set and couple dancing. The couple dance first appears in Bavaria in the late 18th century and rapidly spreads around Europe . The most famous couple dances are also the names of time-signatures: waltz and polka . Circle dancing is known from classical times. By the time of John Playford 's " The English Dancing Master " (1651) it was a dance for everyone. The English term "Country Dance" was adopted all across Europe, and became corrupted into "Contredance" in many languages. Even in modern America the phrase "

Scottish Country Dancing History Scottish country dancing (or SCD, for short) is a modern form of the country dancing popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. It involves groups of six to ten people (most of the time) of mixed gender (most of the time) — a “set” — dancing to the driving strains of reels, jigs and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. (no bagpipes, mostly!). The dance often combines solo figures for the first couple in the set with movements for all the dancers in the set. Many Scottish country dances derive from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections, but a lot have been devised in the fairly recent past, say the last fifty years or so. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish country dancing.

Country dancing is designed for social mixing, primarily so that eligible young males and females meet and assess each other. Although we know of many examples of ceremonial dances , seasonal dances and occupational dances, there is no definite example of country dancing before the 15th century . Certainly there are tunes from onwards which are suggestive but they are without evidence of social context. A convenient starting point would be the paintings of Pieter Brueghel (early 1500s) and the end point would be the first world war. Social dancing obviously continued after but it evolved into ballroom dancing at the formal end of the social scale, or solo performance at the informal end. When you no longer touch a member of the opposite sex, it hardly qualifies as country dancing! The main forms of country dancing are: circle dancing, longways set, square set and couple dancing. The couple dance first appears in Bavaria in the late 18th century and rapidly spreads around Europe . The most famous couple dances are also the names of time-signatures: waltz and polka . Circle dancing is known from classical times but doesn't become a mixed sex dance until the 15th century . In 16th century England it was still possible to distinguish between aristocratic courtly dancing (little or no touching) and peasant dancing. By the time of

Welcome to DanceFlorida's English Country Dance Page
Welcome to the English Country Dance page of the Jacksonville, Florida Country Dance and Song Society. We run a monthly English country dance for "experienced" dancers in Jacksonville, usually some day during the last weekend of the month at a private home. We no longer dance at All Saints Episcopal Church, 4171 Hendricks Avenue. Please visit the Dance Calendar for the current schedule of dances. NOTE: I have decided to make the last weekend English dance one for "experienced" dancers only. This was not an easy decision to make for a number of reasons- first, I never want to exclude any one; certainly, no one who comes to dance will ever be asked to leave or sit out. Participating in any dance will be YOUR personal choice at YOUR comfort level. Always err on the side of COMING to dance versus staying away. Second, it is very hard to define "experienced". If you have ever come to just one of my English dances, please count yourself "experienced". Otherwise, my definition of "experienced" is that you can do a hey (or reel) for 3 or 4 without further teaching. If you can do a hey for 3, I assume you will know or can readily learn more basic moves such as set and turn single; cast up or down; lead; and so forth. As always, all dances are walked through at least once, sometimes more; and are called/prompted as needed.
