    Kingston English Country Dance
Home Home page About About the dance ... Upcoming events of interest The Kingston English country dance series is located at the South Kingstown Land Trust, 17 Matunuck Beach Road, in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, right off of US Route 1. The Land Trust "barn," as it's sometimes called, is a lovely cedar-shingled gambrel-roof hall, with a hardwood floor, wood paneling throughout, and lots of understated elegance and rustic charm. It's about a mile from the shore, and, if the wind is right, you can smell the ocean. Rhode Island's English country dance began in September of 2003 with guest musicians and callers from around the Northeast. At the very first dance, hardly anyone had ever done English dancing, but, over the years, we've developed a substantial core-group of experienced dancers, and our callers and musicians, who travel to a wide variety of venues, have remarked that our dance is particularly friendly and welcoming to newcomers. In the tradition of country dancing, there are no dues to be paid, no lessons to be taken, no prerequisites to be met. All dances are taught and easy to learn. Newcomers are always welcome, with or without a partner. We're looking forward to dancing with you!

    Estienne's Country Dance Book
Country dances are a type of dance that were danced both by country folk and in courts beginning in the late Renaissance and continuing into the 18th century. They have a number of steps in common, but each dance quite often has steps unique to that dance. Country dances in general are an evolution of the bransles, and have some steps in common with these dances. Country dances originated in England, and later spread to Germany and France. Asilomar Ball in Merrill Hall
Scottish country dancing is the Traditional Ballroom Dance of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, was founded to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. And, it's not just for Scots ... today people enjoy Scottish Country Dancing all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solos to bagpipe music, we dance in sets of two to five couples. Everyone changes partners for each dance, so there's no need to bring a partner! The San Francisco Bay area is home to many fine musicians . The dances vary in tempo: lively and fast paced or slow and elegant:
    • Jigs (quick time)
    • Reels (quick time)
    • Strathspeys (slow and lovely)
Fiddles and piano, along with recorders, bass, drums, and accordians are typical. Like other Celtic music, Scottish music is highly emotional - both the lively quicktime tunes and the hidden power of a strathspey will make your heartstrings thrum!
