Tradamis Traditional Dance and Music In Schools Booking inquiries Maypole orders E-mail Home About Tradamis Who We Are ... Clog Dance Country Dancing Our approach Country dances - social dances from all historical periods and social classes The country dance are essentially figure dances done by couples (who sometimes change partners during the dance) in various formations: long lines, squares, rounds etc. Once the figures have been learned, various steps can be taught or the dancers can be left do their own thing.
There can either be an emphasis on the historical techniques of the dances or modern ways of doing them.
Figures and steps can be combined to create new dances or even mixed with other styles of dancing, there is much scope for creativity. Develops spatial and social awareness. You may have been to a Barn Dance (or "Ceilidh", to give it a Celtic flavour), an evening of various country dances  (of English, Scottish, American or other origin) with a caller and band, the emphasis very much on having fun and socialising.
Developing from the original social dance of Tudor England and enjoyed by all walks of life from the 16th to the 21st century.  Still as much fun now as ever. For all ages and abilities.

John Playford - From Country Dance to Contradanse
In 1700, in a treatise entitled Choregraphie , Feuillet published the first notation for dance. In 1706, encouraged by the popularity of English country dancing in France, he published a collection of 32 'contredances' which also contains an explanation of a simplified form of this notation suitable for country dances. Among the dances are several also to be found in editions of The Dancing Master , including 'La Valantine' which was first published as 'Valentine's Day' in the 1679 supplement to the sixth edition. Feuillet's simplified form of notation continued to be used in published collections of French contredanses until the late 18th century. Enlarge Enlarge

Scottish Dance Instruction Pages And Technical Terms Explained - By Reuben Freemantle
This website is intended as a reference to the formal terms used in describing and teaching the traditional dancing of Scotland. How to use this Scottish Country Dancing website Select Comprehensive DICTIONARY Of Dance Terms (on the side navigation bar on every page) and then select from the alphabetical list of links. This is the simplest way to find the explanation of a Scottish Country Dancing term. You may then discover that the definition refers to a closely associated term. If so, follow the link at the bottom of the page to find the associated page. For example, when you have found the description of Strathspey half poussette , it refers to Strathspey poussette at the same logical level and to the logically higher levels Poussette movements and Complex figures Alternatively, if you know that the term is related to one of the main links on the side navigation bar, choose that link. Then, sometimes via an intermediate link, find the exact term you seek. For example, if you seek Corner positions , go to Set structure . Then, via the link at the bottom of the page, to

Here are some of the things that our members enjoy about Scottish Country Dancing:
    • Scottish Country Dancing is fitness with a tradition. I could join without a partner!
    • Really nice people, talented and well informed instructors and lots of fun. Great roots music, plenty of feasts and dance parties, and men who actually want to dance! Something a bit different, something active and enjoyable that allows me to explore my interest in Scotland in a new way. My Mum's side was all Scottish, and I was curious - and a bit surprised really that this "cultural" thing had existed for so long and I didn't know about it I wanted to join a social dance group that gave a variety of dancing, would evoke memories of dancing growing up, and maybe spin off some friendships. I took up Scottish Country dancing to get some exercise. Then I actually started enjoying the classes, the music, the dancing, the discipline of the formal steps and the great fellowship and friendly atmosphere. (I also get my exercise!)

The dance form is called "Scottish," and on special occasions many dancers wear their clan's tartan in kilts or sashes, but there is no requirement to be a "MacAnything." Scottish heritage is not needed to join this group of enthusiastic and friendly people.
Dances are done to the traditional music of jigs, reels and strathspeys. The dancing pace, especially for jigs and reels, provides a good aerobic workout. The complex dancing patterns result in an equally good mental workout. And Scottish Country Dancing is also an ideal form of stress management: you can't think about anything else while dancing! The formations are done in sets of six or eight people, so the activity is also a social and cooperative one. And you don't need a partner to join.

Scottish Country Dancing is a very old form of social dancing, once common across Europe but preserved in Scotland into modern times. Some aspects of Scottish Country Dancing form the basis of square dancing in North America.

Scottish Country Dancing is the ballroom dancing of Scotland. It draws from French traditional dance steps for quicktime dances and the uniquely Scottish strathspey tempo for slower, more stately, dances. Scottish Country Dancing is performed in couples, most frequently in sets of four couples arranged in lines of women facing men, but is also danced in square sets. Each tempo has two basic steps: traveling and setting steps, and dances are generally danced in groups of 8-bar figures. The Chicago Branch sponsors three general SCD classes in the greater Chicago area: Loch Michigan, ScotReel, and Silk and Thistle, and one technique class for advanced dancers. The Branch schedules dancing in Oak Park in July and August, when all classes except Silk and Thistle break for the summer. In the Chicago area there is also Scottish Country Dancing with the Evanston Scottish Country Dancers. Anyone with an interest in all things Scottish and/or dancing is welcome to attend the general classes. You do not need to bring a partner and no prior dancing experience is necessary. Wear soft-soled shoes and come have a good time. Click on the classes button for information about each class and the demo team.
