Greetings from Tokyo!
Yokoso! I'm in a state of shock to find myself here in Japan once again... have I mentioned how much I love it here?!? I arrived the evening of May 4th and checked in to the Le Meridien Pacific Hotel - super convenient as it is next to (literally) the Shinagawa station. After breakfast this morning, I'm heading to Nippori Textile Town to see what sort of damage I can do. Seems a fitting start to the trip, no?!? I don't think I've ever mentioned how much I love Japanese business hotels, so here goes:
  • a heated bathroom mirror that never fogs up during a bath or shower full control of the room's lighting, air conditioning, and radio from the bedside table - this means that you can crawl into bed, and *then* shut off the lights! (really, it's the simple things that make me happy!) every hotel bathroom includes a basket of amenities, always including at least a hairbrush and/or comb, cotton balls, cotton swabs, razor and shaving cream, toothbrush and toothpaste, and shower cap, and often including skincare products. Good quality (no Pert plus here!) shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel are also always included. This makes it easy to pack a very light toiletry bag when I come - so great! a source for instant hot water and a variety of tea (usually green, roasted green, and ume kobu tea - a powdered, tart plum variety) - this is how I *must* wake up every morning, and I love it!

olivia's banner
I was there when this lovely girl came into the world and am so happy to have been there for her 8th birthday. We put this birthday banner together (and another one that's not pictured) and I must say she's a fantastic and innovative co-crafter. Happy Birthday again Olivia! Please say "hi" to your mom and dad and little sister for me. Oh, and while you're at it, would you also give your mom a big hug and tell her it's from me? Thanks! Love,
Aunt Laurie

THE BACK LANE
I love where we live. I love the streets tightly packed with their terrace houses, front gardens oozing frangipani flowers in summer, fences dripping with jasmines through spring, and footpaths lined with jacaranda purple haze. I love the fact you can leave the street fronts of manicured houses [and the not so manicured], step away behind the facades, and enter the world of back alleys and laneways. What I love the most, though, is the graffiti. Back walls sprayed with colour and black and white signs. Grit. Dirt. And in amongst it all council supported and funded graffiti art emblazened across large fronts of wall space - glorious colour and rhythm, plastic gloss colour, intense desire to communicate. My favourites - the white walls gone murky with dirt and age, a conglomoration of drawing, tags, writing, message and picture layered upon each other, mixed in with black and white photocopy paper. Graphic and bold. A splash of red to break it up. Posted at 09:08 PM Permalink Comments (9)

brussel sprout, bacon and asiago salad
November 13th, 2010 We order this salad at an italian restaurant in our neighbourhood whenever we go there and it kind of blows my mind. I love brussel sprouts to begin with, and then to combine them with bacon and cheese (two of my other favorite things) is just kind of a match made in heaven. This is my rough approximation of that salad, which we served to friends who also gave it rave reviews. The brussels have a bit of a bite because they are raw, but I think this is tempered by the richness of the bacon and cheese so it all really works together. 10-12 brussel sprouts
6 slices bacon
1/2 cup thinly sliced asiago cheese
Dressing:
1/2 cup olive oil
3 Tbsp white wine vinegar
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tsp dijon mustard
salt and pepper to taste Cook the bacon in the microwave or oven and slice into small chunks. Set aside. Thinly slice the brussels and separate the leaves into shreds. Remove any of the larger hard white pieces from near the stems. Add to the bowl with the bacon and thinly sliced asiago. Mix together the dressing ingredients and stir vigorously or shake in an enclosed container. Add to the salad and toss well. Filed in In the Kitchen 1 Comments
