SOCIAL CONVENTIONS
The atmosphere of the Greek Islands is famously friendly and laid back, and the locals pride themselves on their 'no problem' attitude to tourists. However, there are a few rules of etiquette to be observed. Nude bathing is illegal on some beaches and can be very offensive to more traditional Greeks, particularly if you are close to a church. The 'mikro ipno', Greece's answer to the Spanish siesta, is widely observed, so excessive noise during the hours of 3 and 5pm is generally frowned upon. Any sort of disrespect to the Greek state or the Orthodox Church will not be taken kindly. Verbal insults can be taken seriously and are punishable in the courts. Family values are very strong throughout the islands and the family is the nucleus of the social structure. Elders are respected and children expect to take care of their parents and grandparents as they become older. For security reasons, photography is forbidden near military installations. (Remember the case of the British plan spotters who ended up in a Greek jail in 2001!)

CRETE - CULTURAL CROSSROADS
Cretan Minoans gave Europe its first taste of civilization - never mind their art, evidence of flush lavatories have been found in the ruins.
Serious culture vultures and determined nature fans will find more than enough to see and do in Crete. They'll need at least a fortnight, or several visits, for taking in comfortably the layer upon layer of history, art and architecture piled up and spread over an island - by far the largest in Greece - boasting three mountain ranges, 1.000 miles of coastline, plains, canyons and 1.500 different types of wild flowers.
Cretan Minoans gave Europe its first taste of civilization - never mind their art, evidence of flush lavatories have been found in the ruins. They also bestowed the first Greek myths - Crete was the birthplace of Zeus. Distinguished sons of the island include El Greco, Mikis "Zorba the Greek" Theodorakis and the sage Epimenides, who warned "all Cretans are liars" - which, if he was lying, means they're all honest, but if he was lying then he was not an honest Cretan...

BACK TO CRETE Crete CULTURE Crete's distinctive mixture in historical times, has produced a culture that remains unique even within Greece. It is worth pointing out that Cretan culture is considered to be the mother of all Greek civilization originated on Crete. Due to Cretes geographical position in the Mediterranean, it has repeatedly been a genesis of various distinct kinds, whose special characteristics have prompted the attention of writers from ancient times, to the present day. When Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453, large number of Greek nobles and scholars took refuge in Crete. As a result, Byzantine culture and Byzantine art took on a fresh lease of life. The Monastery of St. Catherine in Herakleion was a particularly important center of Byzantine culture where theology, philosophy, music and literature were developed. Cretans are considered to be very friendly and traditionally hospitable people. They have their own attitude too. Firstly they are Cretans, and then they are Greeks. For the Greeks, Crete is stereotypically the very last bastion of freedom and a repository of practices and follies, that had long since disappeared elsewhere in the nation. To foreigners as well, Cretans may seem to embody all of the Greek virtues and vices but in fourfold measure.

It is also the fourth largest city in Greece . Its name is also spelled Herakleion , a transliteration of the ancient Greek and Katharevousa name, , or Iraklio , among other variants. For centuries it was known as Candia , a Venetian adaptation of the earlier Greek name Χάνδαξ ( Chandax , "moat") or Χάνδακας, which in turn came from the Arabic rabḍ al-ḫandaq . The English form Candy , derived from French Candie , meant the city of Candia or all of Crete (as in Twelfth Night 5.1). Under the Ottoman Empire , it was called Kandiye . In the local vernacular, it is often called Κάστρο (

The Island
General Navigation
Crete is one of the 13 prefectures of Greece and the second biggest island of East Mediterranean. It is found at the Southest end of Aegean Sea, at the cross of three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa). It is 260 km long but the coast is 1046 km. Concerning the ground morphology Crete combines the sea and the mountain. It is surrounded by the sea and beautiful sandy or rocky coasts for which the island is well known, however a mountainous area crosses the island from the West to the East. At the West the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) (2.452 m) are found, in the middle the mountain Idi known for the peak Psiloritis (2.456 m), and at the East the mountain Dikti (2.148 m). The presence of natural elements and their beauty is very vivid at the island. There are hundreds of caves (most unexplored), gorges, plateaus and a big variety of flora (in Europe) and fauna. The History of Crete begins at the neolithic age. Crete was the centre of one of the most ancient civilizations of the world, the oldest Greek civilization the Minoan (circa 2600–1400 BC)., Still there is ongoing research and excavations of antiquities, and some of them are exhibited at the Archeological museum. Close to Villa Creta you will find, one of the most important archeological regions, the Knossos Palace which is open to visitors throughout the year.

The rich history of Crete has left the island strewn with hundreds of archaeological sites, large and small. The island reached its zenith during prehistoric times when the Minoan civilization dominated the Aegean and produced a fascinating culture which in turn has left behind a plethora of beautiful art and architecture. Once the Minoan culture fell into decline, the Mycenaean powers of mainland Greece controlled the island, and later the Greeks during the Classical and Hellenistic eras. In turn, the Romans established their authority and ruled Crete Consequently, the important archaeological sites found on Crete reflect the different historical eras: Minoan, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, or Byzantine. By far, the most spectacular finds are the Minoan palaces of Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros, while the most important artifacts found in excavations are housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. This museum's collection is complemented by museums in the towns of Agios Nikolaos, Chania, and Sitia.
