Office of Crime Prevention: Juvenile Drug Court receives $67,300 grant
Ben Wright reports that Columbus Council approved a $67,300 grant for the Muscogee Juvenile Drug Court on Tuesday, the first grant provided through the Office of Crime Prevention. After the funds were approved during a 9 a.m. work session, Councilor Glenn Davis wanted to make sure the 10-member council would get a summary of each grant proposal to any government agency in the future. The crime prevention office, the centerpiece of Mayor Jim Wetherington’s push to make Columbus a safe city, will make grants to government agencies that offer programs to prevent crime.

Download the printable pamphlet When you and your friends are shopping, do you get irritated or angry because you can only take three pairs of jeans into the dressing room? The ring you wanted to look at is locked in a case? You have to check all your packages at the door? Sales clerks watch you and your friends suspiciously as you look around? Shoplifting is an expensive problem that everybody pays the price for. It hurts you in several ways — prices keep going up as store owners try to recover some of their losses. A big department store can spend millions a year on security, but it may lose as much as $2,000 a day to shoplifters. And shoplifters give teenagers a bad name.
Who shoplifts?
  • Teens—About 24 percent of apprehended shoplifters are teens between 13 and 17 years old. Amateurs make up the largest number, not professional thieves. These are “everyday” people who steal on impulse, because they see an item they greatly desire, or for a thrill. They tend to believe they won’t get caught or sent to jail.

They are under the direction of a Deputy Chief. They work in conjunction with the community beat initiative to provide the best possible services to the city. In 2007, over 1,500 cases were reviewed in the Detective Bureau. Over 800 cases were assigned detectives based on the solvability or seriousness of the offense and/or need for further arrest or court preparation. These cases were broken down into four investigative categories: CLASS 1 Cases that cannot be solved with a reasonable amount of investigation. CLASS 2 Cases which require a suspect to be arrested, booked, and interrogated and a prosecutable case prepared by the Detective Bureau. CLASS 3 Cases that may be solved if a reasonable amount of investigative effort is assigned to them.

It only took one time for the children of Haiti to capture the heart and soul of Naples, Florida resident and humanitarian, JoAnne Kuehner. Wanting to make a difference through focusing on education, she put her trust and support into people who were already striving for success. Joining forces with Dr. Keith Hussey in 1997, the focus to make a difference expanded to nutrition and healthcare. Now over 20 years later, prides its long-term success of our mission on the foundation on which it was built. continues to believe in people and therefore partners with those in Haiti who are doing an excellent job and supporting them in furthering their work. We do not build and run our own schools. Rather than reinvent the wheel, we work directly with those who are successfully ministering to the poor and who will be there for the long term. In this way, we make sure that over 96 cents of every dollar donated is used for programs that can help create a better future for the children of Haiti. has held the vision from the very beginning that the people of Haiti are the ones who take control of their future and we are here to lend a needed hand along the difficult path.
