Main Page CPOP - ... l Crime Prevention Programs The Wellesley College Police Department offers a number of comprehensive crime prevention programs in support of our key priority of teaching community members proactive strategies to avoid becoming victims of crime. The Department has developed several initiatives to further this priority. To apply for any of the following Campus Police Crime Prevention Programs, or to bring a program to your dorm, please click here for our online registration form. Blue Light Call Stations
There are emergency two-way call stations at strategic locations throughout campus. You can identify the station by the blue light located above the boxes. When the call button is depressed, an individual can communicate directly with the communications coordinator at the Wellesley College Police Department. The individual can then notify the office of the emergency. The communications coordinator will dispatch an officer or emergency team to effectively respond to the situation. There are severe penalties for tampering with a two-way call station or turning in a false alarm. Campus Escort Program
The Wellesley College Campus Escort Program provides all members of the Wellesley College community and visitors a safe, reliable way to travel about the campus during hours of darkness, if they are travelling alone, or feel particularly unsafe. This program provides community members with either a walking escort or a shuttle van (pre-designated stops) to preclude individuals from walking alone on campus during the hours of darkness. We encourage community members to freely travel about the campus, but also recommend individuals walk with a friend during evening and early morning hours. A shuttle van makes regular stops along a pre-designated route. Walking escorts can be provided when needed.

What Have We Learned From Evaluations of Community-Based Crime Prevention Programs?
What We Know Studies have shown that some community-based crime prevention programs have:
  • increased citizen satisfaction with police; reduced resident fear of crime; increased resident involvement in crime prevention activities; increased interactions between residents and police; and reduced crime.
However, outcomes to be dependent on program type and the circumstances in which the program is implemented. That is, not all community-based crime prevention programs have shown evidence of success and an effort that has been shown to be successful in one community may see limited success in another. Program evaluations also indicate that the likelihood of success can be increased by the early participation of community leaders or others with experience in building partnerships. It is possible that some community-based crime prevention programs do better than others at accomplishing certain objectives . Though it is unclear why, Neighborhood Watch has been shown to decrease crime. In addition, an evaluation of the Weed and Seed program showed a reduction in perception of the crime problem after the program began, but a community policing study indicated perceptions that the crime problem increased after instituting community policing. Further, it is common to find that involvement of criminal justice system actors in community-based crime prevention programs will improve their attitudes toward the community. For example, several evaluations of community policing have found that the number of police officers that reported having a positive attitude toward community policing and community involvement in crime prevention efforts has increased after program implementation.

    Crime Prevention Programs
    Crime Prevention Programs
Implementation of community based programs designed by the police are important because the police have an obligation to ensure that citizens are protected and do not take matters into their own hands. These community based programs provide the citizens educational programs to learn how to protect themselves, but also remain law abiding members of the community. These programs also provide the community with a sense of safety and the knowledge needed to stay involved in crime prevention.
There are many challenges associated with implementing these programs within the community. The first issue is commitment for the community. If a neighborhood sets up a Neighborhood Watch program, all members of the neighborhood need to be actively involved for the program to be effective. Another issue is that trust. This issue might arise within the citizen volunteer program. The police must be able to trust the community members who volunteer to assist them in crime solving.

It is, however, our belief that we can work together in order to deter crimes in our community, especially the troublesome ones, such as domestic violence and hate crimes. The Deer Lake Citizens Crime Prevention Committee has been in existence for approximately nine years now and since then we have been trying to answer questions, or analyze answers to questions ,that have been asked for years;" why do people want to steal what others have worked so hard to aquire honestly? Why do certain individuals feel a need to bully their way through life? Why do certain people want to destroy beautification projects in a municipality?
The answers to these questions have been answered, somewhat, by psychiatrists and data derived from years of case histories from law enforcement agencies.
We have been provided with the reasons that most of these criminal acts occur and our existence stems from a need to offer law enforcement agencies much needed assistance in educating the public, not from our expertise or experience in any particular matter, but by offering another avenue in which to channel information to young people about the need to be their own person and not be easily led by a few who are looking for an easy life, at that persons expense, and ultimately leading them down a road of destruction where the return path could take a lifetime.
