Crime Prevention Programs
The Department of Public Safety places particular emphasis on crime prevention. A primary vehicle for accomplishing this goal is the College’s comprehensive crime prevention program. This program is based upon dual concepts of eliminating or minimizing criminal opportunities whenever possible and encouraging students and staff to be responsible for their own safety/security and the security of others. The following is a list of the crime prevention programs and projects offered by the College of the Holy Cross. Escort Programs
The Department provides a personal safety escort service for persons walking on campus and from campus, to a principal place of residence within a reasonable distance of the campus, during the hours of darkness when personal safety is a concern. New Student Orientation
A crime prevention presentation accompanied by brochures and other printed material are given to new students during the beginning of each academic year. Security is also discussed at the opening day panel for parents and new students.

Hollywood Police Activities League
What is PAL? The Police Activities League is a youth crime prevention program first instituted in the 1910’s, which relies on a variety of athletic and recreational activities to cement a bond between police officers and youth. The program keeps “at-risk” kids off the street by providing them with positive alternatives to drugs and gangs and gives them a variety of ways to become more involved with their community. PAL is a national program with a membership exceeding 1.5 million children ages 6 to 17. PAL has more than 350 law enforcement agencies serving over 700 cities with 1,700 facilities throughout the United States. The Hollywood PAL Chapter, formed in the mid-1990’s, is a volunteer-driven organization that is dependent upon support from the private sector - individuals, business leaders, corporations and foundations. With the help of several LAPD officers who work full-time with our youth, we strive to teach children to become productive, responsible and caring individuals. We provide educational, cultural, social and athletic activities at various supervised locations throughout Hollywood. Vision Statement Hollywood PAL will work to prevent juvenile crime and delinquency by offering area youth positive, healthy and enriching activities under the supervision and mentorship of police officers and other adult role models. Hollywood PAL will be seen as the pre-eminent youth organization that unites Hollywood’s business community, neighborhood leaders, law enforcement organizations and educational institutions through a passionate commitment to positively change the lives of children and families in Hollywood’s underserved neighborhoods.

SECURITY ALERTS
Wartburg College has a campus wide mass communications system (Connect ED) that warns students, faculty, and staff of emergency conditions by cell and land-line phones, text-messaging, and e-mail. Everyone is entered into the system with communication avenues known by the college. Students, faculty, and staff may add phone numbers or opt out of the system. Campus Security also issues written security and crime alerts for crimes that can place the campus community at risk during both short- and long-term time periods. These alerts are posted on major bulletin boards in classroom buildings, the Saemann Student Center and in all residence halls. Additionally, alerts are posted on the Security section of the Wartburg Web site. Crime alerts are notices regarding specific crimes occurring on campus. Security alerts are notices reminding the campus community of crime conducive trends, not necessarily in response to a specific crime. If circumstances warrant, special alerts may be published in the Trumpet, and/or announced over Wartburg TV and KWAR-FM.

    Laptop Computer Registration
A laptop is a valuable resource for students and workers on the go. They often contain important personal information and data that is important to the owner. Unfortunately, they also have great value to thieves and burglars. Registering your laptop can be an important step in preventing victimization. Registration stickers often act as a deterrent, making the item difficult to pawn or sell quickly. Information obtained during registration, such as make, model and serial number, also make it easier for police to identify recovered items and return them to their proper owners. University of Colorado Police and the Boulder Police Department offer a laptop computer registration program that is quick, easy and free at one of four registration sites. Owners must bring their laptops to the registration site so that the computer can be marked with a tamper-resistant sticker. Although hundreds of laptop computers have been stolen in Boulder over the past several years, to date, no registered laptops have been reported stolen.
