Nature vs. Nurture
There have been many discussions and debates about what causes crime . What causes a person to commit a murder, or even a lesser offense such as burglary? Some people would assume that criminal behavior was due to a personтАЩs upbringing and/or life experiences (тАЬnurtureтАЭ). Others would suggest that criminal behavior is more complex and would involve a personтАЩs genetic makeup (тАЬnatureтАЭ). Are people just born that way? Is criminal behavior pre-determined at some point in peopleтАЩs lives that they will become criminals? These are valid questions when examining the root of crime and the criminal mind. There are nine generally accepted categories of criminal behavior . They are Classical, Biological, Psychobiological, Psychological, Sociological, Social-Psychological, Conflict, Phenomenological, and Emergent. These classifications are not meant to legitimize a personтАЩs action when committing a crime. They can, however, assist scientists in developing a better understanding of what causes crime . Studies comparing identical and non-identical twins, and also the outcome of adopted children, have provided convincing evidence of a modest genetic contribution to crime. Another l

The subject of the study was a representative birth cohort of men and women in their late adolescence and early adulthood from Dunedin, New Zealand. Healthy Heart Reports
Criminals Have Low Cholesterols? A study from Sweden shows that criminals have lower blood cholesterol levels than law-abiding citizens. Does having a low blood cholesterol cause you to become a criminal? People who have gonorrhea take more antibiotics than those who don't have that disease, but that does not mean that taking antibiotics causes gonorrhea. You would need to show whether having a low cholesterol causes criminal behavior, if criminal behavior causes a low cholesterol, or the same thing that causes criminal behavior also causes low cholesterol. People who are poor are more likely to do things that get themselves arrested, and people who are poor also are more likely not to get enough food or to be on drugs, both of which cause lower cholesterol. If you have a low blood cholesterol level, be delighted that you are at low risk for a heart attack, and earn enough money so you will be less likely to break the law. Journal of Psychiatric Research (vol 34, pg 301, 2000).
