Very few academic institutions offer degrees specifically focused on Forensic Psychology. Other classes that help prepare students for the field of Forensic Psychology include: cognitive, clinical, criminal investigative, social, and developmental psychology. Some forensic psychologists choose to focus their careers exclusively on research, which ranges anywhere from learning how to improve interrogation methods to the detailed assessment of eyewitness testimony. Public policy is another area of interest for forensic psychologists. In this line work forensic psychologists act as researchers helping to design prisons and other correctional facilities. Most often Forensic Psychology includes areas between the conventional options of criminal justice (i.e, law enforcement, academic training, and corrections). One term (15 units) Forensic psychology is a field that addresses the issues surrounding the existence of crime and the function of the law for individuals and society as a whole. It is a cross-over discipline, representing a fusion of psychology, criminology and sociology. Forensic psychology binds psychological theory to legal practice and is an applied field of psychology with career prospects in the prison service, research, consultancy or private practice. This research area is sometimes referred to as the psychology of criminal behaviour or forensic psychology. It will focus primarily upon the criminal although it will also look at some of the characteristics of victims of crime and the law. It will be important to become aware of the way in which psychological theories aid our understanding of criminal behaviour. It is the aim that you experience a broad range of theories and perspectives within the forensic psychology field. Some of the issues investigated involve particularly unpleasant facets of human nature, such as murder and sexual violence. However, it must be assumed that there are psychological components to all these forms of socially unacceptable behaviour.

    What is forensic psychology?
Forensic psychology involves applying psychology to the field of criminal investigation and the law. The popularity of forensic psychology has grown phenomenally in recent years, partly due to sensationalized portrayals of the field in movies and television, which are not always accurate. Forensic psychologists are often depicted as criminal profilers who are able to almost psychically deduce a killer's next move. In reality, these professionals practice psychology as a science within the criminal justice system and civil courts.

    Definition of Criminal Forensic Psychology
By Tom Ryan eHow Contributor updated: May 14, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Forensic psychologists may be called in as expert witnesses in criminal cases. fist image by Aleksandar Radovanovic from Fotolia.com Criminal forensic psychology is almost a redundant phrase, as forensic psychology itself is directly related to the justice system. Forensic psychology is the practice of applying methods of psychology to criminal justice. This can include a variety of specialties, such as researching interrogation methods and profiling criminals to assist in police investigations.
    Expert Witness
  • A prominent aspect of forensic psychology is appearing in court as an expert witness. This entails being called to the witness stand not as a traditional witness to a crime, but as an expert who can interpret the psychological aspects of the crime and those involved. Forensic psychologists are called into court to weigh in on the proceedings, giving expert opinions and interpretations of the case at hand.
  • Before Court
  • Forensic psychology applies to the mechanics of the trial process itself. Forensic psychologists may work with attorneys to select impartial jurors before the case begins, or to help strategize while the trial is ongoing. They may also be called in to evaluate the defendant of a crime. For example, a forensic psychologist may need to determine whether or not a defendant was mentally capable at the time a crime was committed-some defendants may claim that they acted out of temporary insanity to lessen the punishment, so a forensic psychologist must determine whether the claim is accurate. They may also determine the competency of a defendant, particularly in cases in which the defendant is a child or mentally handicapped.
