I am currently a 2nd yr. law student and want to pursue a graduate degree in forensic psychology. I would like to do some profiling in my practice eventually. Any suggestions about the field and schools that have these programs? I have come across very few, especially in the eastern central part of the country. Self Psychology Page Contents Search Post ... I am a 1982 graduate of the California School of Professional Psychology, Berkeley campus. Prior to receiving my Doctorate, I trained for three years as a psychological assistant and interned for three years in community mental health and psychiatric clinics. In 1983, I took a position as a staff psychologist with the California Youth Authority and continued working there until 1988. I have been practicing independently since 1986. Although I have trained and practiced extensively as a psychotherapist, my practice has for some years been devoted almost entirely to criminal forensic psychology. I am an an expert in trial competency, insanity, and sentencing issues. I have served as a consultant to the California Department of Mental Health, conducting pre-parole evaluations of mentally disordered offenders. I have also worked for the Department of Corrections as a Hearing Officer in involuntary medication proceedings. I work regularly on Court appointment and on referral from attorneys. I have qualified as an expert and testified throughout California. For the California Board of Psychology, I consulted on the development of the Law and Jurisprudence examination.

    Criminal Psychology
(Photo Credit: Jeffrey Errick) What is Criminal Psychology? Posing this question is much the same as asking what is forensic psychology as the two terms are often used interchangeably, however, I think it is possible to differentiate between the two; particularly in relation to their range of enquiry. Both terms relate to the application of psychology within a legal context but the focus of enquiry within forensic psychology is much broader, because unlike criminal psychology it can encompass both criminal and non criminal applications. By definition criminal psychology is restricted to examining crime and criminality. As there are no universally accepted defintions of forensic psychology or criminal psychology the distinction between the two is open to debate, however I personally think it makes sense to consider forensic psychology as a broader umbrella term within which criminal psychology resides. Applying Psychology To Crime In their book Criminal Psychology , authors Francis Pakes and Suzanne Pakes note that criminal psychology is primarily concerned with answering two questions. Firstly, "how can psychology further our understanding of crime, its causes, consequences and prevention?" And secondly, "how can psychology help the criminal justice system and other agencies in dealing with crime?" This is a very useful description in that it spells out the (narrower) focus alluded to above i.e. that criminal psychology is an applied branch of psychology that applies general psychology to issues of crime and justice.

    Definition of Criminal Forensic Psychology
By Tom Ryan eHow Contributor updated: May 14, 2010 Forensic psychologists may be called in as expert witnesses in criminal cases. fist image by Aleksandar Radovanovic from Fotolia.com Criminal forensic psychology is almost a redundant phrase, as forensic psychology itself is directly related to the justice system. Forensic psychology is the practice of applying methods of psychology to criminal justice. This can include a variety of specialties, such as researching interrogation methods and profiling criminals to assist in police investigations.
    Expert Witness
  • A prominent aspect of forensic psychology is appearing in court as an expert witness. This entails being called to the witness stand not as a traditional witness to a crime, but as an expert who can interpret the psychological aspects of the crime and those involved. Forensic psychologists are called into court to weigh in on the proceedings, giving expert opinions and interpretations of the case at hand.
  • Before Court
  • Forensic psychology applies to the mechanics of the trial process itself. Forensic psychologists may work with attorneys to select impartial jurors before the case begins, or to help strategize while the trial is ongoing. They may also be called in to evaluate the defendant of a crime. For example, a forensic psychologist may need to determine whether or not a defendant was mentally capable at the time a crime was committed-some defendants may claim that they acted out of temporary insanity to lessen the punishment, so a forensic psychologist must determine whether the claim is accurate. They may also determine the competency of a defendant, particularly in cases in which the defendant is a child or mentally handicapped.

      Overview
Thinkers and researchers in the human sciences have always had an interest in deviant behaviour in individuals. Countless theories and beliefs have been proposed to explain the "criminal personality" and, more recently, the tools of psychological research have been applied within criminal justice systems worldwide to aid in the apprehension and understanding of those who break the law. This course will address the various theories presented by criminology and criminal psychology, along with a thorough exploration of the world of forensic psychology. Using real-life examples, we will examine how the forensic psychologist aids the police services in areas such as offender profiling, suspect interviewing and research.
