Criminal Justice
Sean Riddell, Chief Counsel
The Criminal Justice Division was created within the Department of Justice in 1974 to address the need for coordination in the law enforcement community. The programs and functions administered and performed within the Division provide support and line services as well as act as a statewide multipurpose catalyst to Oregon law enforcement efforts. The Division is organized in two sections: District Attorney Assistance and Organized Crime. In addition to their prosecution responsibilities, Division attorneys also provide general legal counsel to the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. The Division also investigates and prosecutes criminal election law complaints referred by the Secretary of State. Given the explosive growth and complexity of crime in this state over the last decade, the problems confronting the state's law enforcement agencies have become more sophisticated and more intractable. As a result, the services provided by the Criminal Justice Division are all the more crucial. Indeed, in many instances, the Criminal Justice Division is the only agency that can provide essential services

Castleton State College Castleton, Vermont 05735 info@castleton.edu Criminal Justice Program Criminal justice majors at Castleton examine the social, political, and historical impacts of crime and the criminal justice system. They study law, factors that can lead to criminality, issues regarding the fairness of the justice system, and misconceptions about crime and the criminal justice system itself. They learn the importance of research and discover that often there are no easy answers. Students gain a broad understanding of human behavior and diversity and gain important skills, such as critical thinking, communication, and problem solving. An Interdisciplinary Field Criminal justice is an interdisciplinary field of study. It includes knowledge specific to the criminal justice system and process, and draws upon research and theory from fields such as sociology, psychology, law, history, and political science. The curriculum reflects the growing academic quality and expectations of Criminal Justice programs across the United States. Students take a broad variety of courses in law enforcement, the criminal justice process, corrections, victim studies, and special topics focusing on contemporary issues and social problems.

The Department of Sociology houses two majors: Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies . The Department of Sociology is also attached to the Legal Studies minor, which is under the direction of the Department of Political Science.
At Thiel, our criminal justice studies program has a special focus: juvenile and family justice. Our program emphasizes issues of juvenile delinquency and family members in abusive relationships, reducing recidivism or repeat offenses and bringing troubled families to normalcy. Graduates from our program work in courts, specialized treatment programs, public and private agencies such as juvenile probation, child and protective services, and others dedicated to principles of behavior reform. Our approach is fundamentally different from programs in criminal justice that emphasize crime and punishment, police science and the administration of justice.
The major is interdisciplinary, concentrating on sociology as a way to gain basic understanding of issues involved in juvenile delinquency and domestic violence. The major requires and encourages study in a variety of related and supportive fields including sociology, political science, psychology, religion and philosophy. A student who graduates from Thiel College with a major in criminal justice studies will:

The Department of Criminal Justice at The University of Louisiana at Monroe is the oldest of its kind in the state. The undergraduate programs began in 1970 and the graduate program began in 1974. The department has an enrollment in 2006 in excess of 325 majors. There are currently six full time faculty lines. In addition, the department utilizes adjunct faculty members (local police, courts, and correctional personnel) and graduate teaching assistants as appropriate and as necessary. The department graduates between 50 and 70 persons each year.
The department offers three degrees: the Associate of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts, and the Master of Arts in Criminal Justice. In addition, the department provides in-service and continuing education training to law enforcement officers in the northeast Louisiana region, and from surrounding states, through its Institute of Law Enforcement. The North Delta Regional Training Academy is a POST-certified academy which provides basic law enforcement certification to police officers in approximately 66 agencies in 11 northeast Louisiana parishes.
Several criminal justice classes are taught in the evening and/or online. It is not practical to assume that one can obtain an undergraduate degree by pursuing classes exclusively online, exclusively in the evening, or both. However, we do offer all graduate classes in both the online format and in the classroom. Classes alternate in the forum in which they are held. Thus, a graduate student

Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement
America is a great and free country because the powers of the police are limited by our fundamental legal charter, the Constitution. The Bill of Rights, however, is in danger from government officials who feel justified overriding its provisions. Cato's legal scholars defend the Constitution because if we were to rely upon the government to abide by the fundamental law, our hard won liberties would soon be lost.

Offender Treatment Program (OTP)
The Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act of 2000 (SACPA) provided drug treatment rather than incarceration for first- or second-time nonviolent adult drug offenders who use, possess, or transport illegal drugs for personal use. Funding for SACPA was eliminated effective July 1, 2009, but OCJC will maintain a SACPA administrative archive for reference purposes. The Offender Treatment Program (OTP) was established in Fiscal Year (FY) 2006-07 to enhance SACPA outcomes and accountability. [
