Overview
  • The programme emphasises the relationship between criminology and other fields of study such as law, globalisation, gender, racism and the city. The curriculum draws on cutting-edge developments within criminology and the exciting research being conducted by many of our lecturers. Dr Aisha Gill, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, regularly contributes to national media as an expert on the subjects of "honour" killings, forced marriages and domestic violence. There are opportunities for work placements in appropriate environments.
Criminology encourages students to think both practically and critically on the topics of crime and crime control. The programme examines the complex underpinnings of criminal behaviour, mechanisms to control crime and the relationship between crime and gender, ethnicity, age and poverty.

What is Criminology?
When people look into criminology, they may initially be surprised by how expansive the field is. Anyone that is at all associated with the scientific study of crime, the relationship between the criminal and his or her environment, and society’s reaction to crime would have some sort of placement within the scene of Criminology. In some instances, criminologists are researchers that are trying to find the common links between deviant behavior and the environment, in order to try to pinpoint what it is that causes or perpetuates crime.
There are currently a number of different theories that attempt to explain, through the process of science, what it is that causes a crime to take place. These theories began to emerge in earnest in the middle of the 1800’s. Over the course of the next 200 or so years, new theories began to spring up and eventually they began to involve genetics, hormones and biological makeup. Previously, theories of criminology rested heavily on society and the environment’s effect on the individual as a source to either push an individual into crime or away from crime.
There are three distinct schools of thought when it comes to criminology. One of the first schools of thought, the Classical school believes that utilitarian philosophy is the supporting notion of criminology. They argue that individuals have free will and can decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong. The hedonistic, or self-indulgent, side of the body must be balanced against the rational of the individual. When the hedonistic side wins, crime may ensue. Rational is the side of the individual that would consider the penalty of the crime and, if the punishment is severe enough, is believed to be the piece of the individual that would keep them from crime by looking at the costs. Positivists are those who believe that the factors that contribute to the criminal’s propensity to go against the law do not rest within their own control. Rather, elements such as society or the person’s chemical makeup do.

Crime and how to control crime are issues that both fascinate us and make us fearful. From the actions of petty thieves to the threats of terrorist organisations, crime affects us all to a lesser or greater extent. But why are some actions defined as criminal or anti-social, while others are not? And who defines them? As an OU student studying criminology you’ll explore a variety of questions and concerns around social order, security and surveillance and learn how governments try to tackle them. And through this study you’ll also be learning more about contemporary society, welfare policy and crime-control policy.  From a career perspective, you’ll find your studies will be of particular value if you’re involved in, or plan to work in the criminal justice system, health care, housing, local government, public services, social welfare, or the voluntary sector.
Where to start in Criminology
A really useful place to start getting ready for your studies would be to read a good quality newspaper and to follow coverage in other media of debates about crime, punishment and social control: you could be using the internet, television documentaries and radio analysis programmes. We recommend beginning your study of Criminology at the OU with either Introducing the social sciences (DD101) or Introducing the social sciences - part 1 (DD131) and Introducing the social sciences - part 2 (DD132)  as these courses will develop the study skills, the knowledge and the understanding that you’ll need for the successful completion of further study in this subject.

Criminology at Huddersfield
Crime is a perennial problem which touches on all our lives through direct experience, such as that of being a victim, a witness, or being subject to expanding security measures in airports and town centres. Our preoccupation with crime is reflected through massive media coverage of crime on political, documentary and fictional levels. Yet how much does the general public understand crime or how crime is studied? If you wish to develop an informed understanding of crime and/or to seek a career in an ever-expanding criminal justice field, then this is the course for you. You will learn how criminology is a field rather than a subject: criminology applies a variety of academic subjects, such as sociology, psychology, biology and geography, to the many issues generated by crime. In doing so, it produces many different understandings of crime. This course at Huddersfield is designed to reflect the broad and expanding range of ideas within criminology. You will have the opportunity to explore, amongst other things, the causes of crime, the responses to crime and its impact on individuals and society at large. You will also have the opportunity to choose from a broad range of options which will stimulate your interest and learning. The course is informed by a combination of research expertise, practice experience and specialist knowledge. Teaching and learning is enhanced by our contacts with criminal and community justice professionals.

Criminology Majors
If you are fascinated by the questions of what causes crime, and what can be done about it, then criminology may be the major or minor for you. Although it is an interdisciplinary area of study, criminology relies heavily on the sociological method. If you have enjoyed sociology or criminal justice courses, you might like to pursue the study of criminology.
Major:
Criminology , B.A.
Minor:
Criminology , B.A. (Click major/minor/certificate title to see typical courses for the program) Criminology is the study of criminal behavior, and how society defines and responds to crime. Criminologists attempt to identify the causes of crime as they occur in society and in individuals. They also study the political and social aspects of defining crime: what is a crime and who is a criminal. Criminologists also examine societal responses to crime, by studying such topics as how the criminal justice system functions, the effectiveness of public policies and programs aimed at controlling crime, the portrayal of crime in the popular culture, and related subjects. Alternatively, you might want to try the course Principles of Sociology. This Liberal Arts Core course is also the first course required for the criminology major.
