Criminology: The criminology and criminal justice curriculum provides students with a multidisciplinary understanding of crime and justice within the framework of broader social processes. Criminology is the study of crime, the causes of crime, the meaning of crime in terms of law, and community reaction to crime, while Criminal Justice refers to the system used by government to maintain social control, prevent crime, enforce laws, and administer justice. The curriculum offered at EMU is grounded in both theory and the application of crime and crime control, reflecting not only on the interrelationships of multiple disciplines, such as history, law and psychology, but also on the multicultural, international and global relationships of peace and conflict. Additionally, our program is designed to examine fundamental questions of morality, ethics, human rights and social justice as these pertain to the administration of criminal law.
Some of the exciting topics include:
  • Transnational Crime and Violence Deviance White Collar Crime Community Corrections Juvenile Justice Criminal Investigation Policing in Society

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN CRIMINOLOGY
What is Criminology?
The prominent sociologist Edwin Sutherland described criminology as "the body of knowledge regarding delinquency and crime as social phenomena. It includes within its scope the process of making laws, of breaking laws, and of reacting towards the breaking of laws." This description accurately summarizes the three main branches of criminology: Sociology of law - Criminologists examine and evaluate the origins, nature, application, and modification of our criminal laws. Criminologists recognize the fact that laws do not simply exist; rather they are consciously created and maintained by members of a society. Laws also reflect cultural values; they will differ significantly across societies, and will change over time to reflect changing values, beliefs, and social realities. Criminal etiology - Criminologists attempt to identify the causes of criminal behaviour. Most modern theories of crime are derived from the major sociological perspectives: structural functionalism, social conflict, and symbolic interactionism. Explanations of criminal behaviour range from individuals having ambitious goals but no legal way to reach them, to the idea that (like other behaviours) criminal behaviour is learned from those we spend time with, to the assertion that powerful members of society act to criminalize the behaviours that threaten their power and position.

A Life Sentence

Children are murder victims, too. To have one’s child murdered is the ultimate nightmare—families must deal not only with their own grief and anger but with the police and the media as well. This program examines how parents of murdered children are also victims of the crime. For them, there can be no question of mercy for the criminal, as there is no remission of pain.
A View to a Kill: Witnessing an Execution
VIDEO
This is the story of Linda Kelley, president of Parents of Murdered Children, whose family in 1996 became the first to witness the execution of a man responsible for killing two of its members. Linda, her husband Jim, daughter Robin, and grandmother Angeline reveal how they faced the violent death of the couple’s two other children, and how they prepared themselves to watch Leo Jenkins, the murderer, die of lethal injection. They take a tour of the death chamber, and fret about the proper dress code for an execution.
Abused Wives
VIDEO What kind of woman allows her husband to abuse her emotionally and physically? What kind of man is capable of such violence? In this specially adapted Phil Donahue program, the wife of a former chief enforcement officer of the Securities and Exchange Commission tells of a marriage marked by a constant pattern of abuse.

These specializations: social analysis, social services and gerontology. These specializations are designed to underscore the centrality of race, class, gender, age and culture in the social organization of human behavior. The criminology major is oriented toward the social scientific study of crime, law and deviance. Both majors provide solid training for a variety of professional careers.
Criminology
Criminology is a specialized sub-field of sociology that focuses on the scientific study of state, law and crime. By examining a broad range of social activities from the social psychology of child deviance to the globalized networks of organized crime, criminology strives toward a greater understanding of patterned deviance and its relationship to structural factors such as social inequality and the legal order. As a social scientific enterprise, criminology informs the fields of social justice studies, legal studies and criminal justice, ultimately finding its use not only in the practical work of social control agencies but also in a variety of communitybased institutions organized to protect our civil and human rights. University of Lincoln in top 10
Students voted the University of Lincoln's Criminology programmes as no.7 in the UK, according to the National Student Survey 2010*. *The NSS classifies Criminology programmes at Lincoln as 'Sociology'. Statistics based on the average response of questions 1-22 of the National Student Survey as provided by unistats.com.
Introduction
There are basically two ways of studying Criminology at Lincoln. You can specialise in Criminology on its own as a single subject and become what we would call ‘a hard core Criminologist’ or you can take the sawn off version and study the pared down variant of Criminology as a joint honours alongside another subject. If you take Criminology with Psychology or Law then you will study slightly more of these subjects than Criminology so as to ensure that you meet both BPS and Law Society qualifying status. But in each case you will still follow core criminology subjects and graduate with a genuine ‘joint degree’, therefore your commitment to both components of a joint honours degree, if you chose to study for a joint award, should be as equally weighted as possible. The first year is more broadly based and thus offers significant opportunities to change programmes at the end of the first year e.g. from joint to single or vice versa, although these opportunities are subject to course requirements and may be more limited for Law and Psychology students.

The Criminology degree offers students a broad introduction to Criminology leading to progressively greater specialisation. The degree, which is run by nationally and internationally renowned Criminological researchers, has been designed to promote both disciplinary-specific knowledge and transferable skills.  The introductory modules taken in Year One focus on stimulating interest in the field and encouraging critical thought about the concept of crime, explanations of crime and strategies of crime control. In addition, a strong emphasis on research methods introduces students to the range of social research methods available and the different ways in which knowledge about social problems such as criminal behaviour can be gathered. In years two and three, these core ideas are developed through specialised modules and more interactive styles of learning. In addition, students can work on a dissertation in their final year, which provides an opportunity to put some of their new skills into practice. The degree thus enables students to build up a range of skills and knowledge whilst simultaneously developing a critical appreciation of the processes of criminological research, criminological debates and the operation of the criminal justice system.
