Apr 17, 2009 General Overview Like most Balkan countries, Croatia's terrain is dominated by mountains; two ranges, the Dinaric Alps and the Slavonian Heights, form the backbone of each half of the arc-shaped country. The Adriatic coastal area (Dalmatia) has an indented rocky coastline, with a few sandy beaches hidden in its bays and inlets. Over 1,185 islands, islets and rocks (66 of them inhabited) are scattered offshore. This strip is only 70 km at its widest, narrowing to an average of 20 km between Split and Dubrovnik. The western part of the Adriatic coast is dominated by the 3,600 km2 Istrian peninsula.Northern Croatia consists of a broader section of land extending from Zagreb in the west to Osijek in the east. This latter part of Croatia is lower lying than Dalmatia, except in the north where it meets the Styrian Alps. There are areas of marshland along the banks of the rivers Drava and Danube, the waterways that form the border with Hungary and Serbia. Environmental Factors

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Croatia is situated in southeast Europe to the west of the Balkan Peninsula along the Adriatic Sea. It borders Slovenia and Hungary to the north, Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east, and Montenegro to the southeast. Its capital city is Zagreb, located in north-central Croatia. The country is nearly twice the size of Belgium or a little smaller than West Virginia.
Croatia's land is divided into three different parts: the Pannonian, Peri-Pannonian, and Adriatic. The Pannonian and Peri-Pannonian can be found in the northern and eastern parts of Croatia. In these areas lie lowlands, hills, and short mountains where farming is very common.
Along the Adriatic coast, Croatia's temperatures are very mild, but further inland it can be a bit cooler, especially in winter. For example, in Zagreb, the average daily high temperature in the summer is 27 degrees Celsius and during the winter drops to 2 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the coast is protected from cold northern winds by tall mountains along Croatia's shores, and winters are very warm there.

Croatia Geography
Croatia is located between South-Central Europe and Middle Europe. Its shape resembles that of a crescent or a horseshoe, which flanks its neighbours Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. To the north lie Slovenia and Hungary; Italy lies across the Adriatic Sea. Its mainland territory is split in two non-contiguous parts by the short coastline of Bosnia and Herzegovina around Neum. Its terrain is diverse, including:

    Geography and Nature
Croatia is situated close to densely populated and industrially developed European countries. Many internationally important transport routes cross Croatia. The importance of the geographical position of the Republic of Croatia is also enhanced by the Adriatic Sea, the northernmost gulf of the Mediterranean which is the closest to the central part of the European continent. The most important routes are centered along the Sava river, the Adriatic and the Drava river; there are also several important transversal routes from the Austrian and Hungarian border to the Adriatic coast (to Rijeka and Split).
    Natural and geographic parts
The area of Croatia can be divided into three major natural and geographic parts:
    • The Pannonian and Peri-Pannonian area comprises the lowland and hilly parts of eastern and northwestern Croatia; mountains higher than 500 m are rare and of an insular character. Most of this area is being used for farming and livestock breading. Slavonija and Baranja in the east are the most suiotable for growing cereals; the humid valleys and the hills are richly afforested while the northwestern part, which gravitates to Zagreb, is industrially the most developed.
The hilly and mountainous area , which separates Pannonian Croatia from its coastal part, is less developed. Its future development will be based on its transit importance, the growth of the already existing wood and timber industry, and the still underexploited potential for the production of healthy food, and winter and rural tourism.
