    Crochet Square
Begin with 4 chain stitches, and work 1 single on the 1st chain, to make a round. Work, 1 chain and 2 plain on the next chain, 3 plain on each of the next 3 chain, 1 plain on the stitch on which the two first plain are worked.
Slip the next stitch, that is, put the needle in between the horizontal bars of the 1st plain stitch of the previous row, and draw the thread out without making a stitch.
Then make 1 chain and 2 plain on the slipped stitch.
After which, you make 3 plain on the second of the 3 plain that form the corner, and 1 plain on all the other stitches of the last row. The beginning and end of each row, are worked as described above.
This figure represents a square, worked in consecutive rows. In making a crochet square, the rows may end in the middle of a side.
When you use a stitch that has to be worked to and fro, you turn your work at the end of every row and work back along the stitches you have just made.

Crochet is a truly international craft, crocheted relics dating before the 1800's have been found on three continents. Crochet generally describes a fiber art using a hook. In its most common contemporary form crochet uses yarns, but some specialized types of crochet use other materials like fabric strips or thread. Crocheted item can be either functional or purely decorative. This is a quiet activity, usually done while seated. This makes it very accessible to persons with mobility limitations. Crochet hooks are available in a variety of sizes and materials. These devices can be easily adapted for persons with weak grasp patterns. Learning to crochet is a complex visual perceptual task, and may be difficult for persons with visual or perceptual limitations. Crochet involves small, controlled repetitive motions while simultaneously holding a hook. and keeping some tension on yarn held in the other hand. This makes it an unlikely choice for persons with spasticity. Persons with hemiplegia will need a device or strategy to hold and stabilize the hook for them.

Crocheting uses a rod with a hook on one end to form interlocking loops using thread, yarn, or other cord-like material. There is also "finger crocheting" which uses fingers instead of a hook and was probably used in the earliest versions of crocheting. Crocheting can range from tiny hooks using the equivalent of sewing thread to large hooks using multiple strands of regular or bulky yarn or even rope. Crocheting can be used to make clothes, household items (such as afghans, doilies, etc.), lace, toys or even sculpture. Crocheting has undergone a revival in the past few years. New, updated patterns, large hooks as well as new, bulky or novelty yarns have found a niche in this modern era of "instant gratification."

        Crocheting Dreadlocks
This is a method for tightening up the loops on mature dreads. Please note that crocheting should not be used for tightening roots. The problem with using it to tighten roots is that the hair at the base of the dread that you have crocheted will be twisted instead of dreaded. Loose hair at the roots can eventually get knotty and dread up but twisted hair will continue to lay twisted since it will be held at both ends. The roots will look much better right after you crochet them but the hair in the twist will never have a chance to get knotted and it will never dread. The long term effect of this will be dreads that look much thinner and bend more easily in some areas than others which makes them appear broken or weak in areas. And it kinda looks like a braid in the middle of your dread. So don't do it! :) Used correctly however, crocheting is still great for tightening up the slack in dread loops that appear in the body of the dread. Remember that ALL dreads are supposed to have a little loose hair at the root, about an inch or so. This is where the dread will eventually start to dread itself. Crocheting this hair will make the dreadlock look tight but it will prevent it from dreading itself as it grows. The dread needs that area of loose hair to form tangles and knots which will eventually tighten to become new dread.
