Crochet hook
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The "hook" A crochet hook is a type of needle with a hook at one end used to draw thread through knotted loops. Only one crochet hook is needed to make crochet stitches. The crochet hook's earliest use appears to have been in the late 18th century or early 19th century. Typical materials for crochet hooks are wood, plastic, casein , or aluminum. Historical examples also include bone, steel, porcupine quill, celluloid, agate, ivory, and fossilized mammoth ivory. They can have decorative handles. The handle may be shaped to fit the hand for easier use. Some hooks are made with wooden or plastic handles with the hook made of metal and inserted into the handle. An alternative form is the Tunisian crochet hook, which is much longer than a regular crochet hook, in order to accommodate the multiple loops used in Tunisian crochet. A type of crochet needle with a hook at each end, known as a cro-hook , is used to make double-sided crochet pieces.

edit Differing size systems
Hooks come in various sizes (measured in millimetres or fractions of an inch), according to the thickness of the needle. There are several systems of letters and/or numbers that describe the sizing of crochet hooks. The size of the hook is usually matched with an appropriate ply or thickness of thread.

A New Cottage
Today's title is a reflection of the many changes of this past year. After a year's absence (not so constant, eh?) The Constant Cottage is back in a new home. A lot has happened since I last wrote and it is so hard to believe that we have moved from our cozy cottage in a small town by a river to a bigger community in a harbor . . . still in a relative cottage. My New Year's resolution is to write more - lucky you - and possibly pursue a writing career, perhaps as a magazine contributor or something like it. You know, work from home and make lots of money. Right. Well, at least I resolve to write something every day. So new cottage, new focus to the blog, and we'll see what else is new in the New Year. Happy 2008! posted by Tina @ 8:15 PM 1 comments

Blogged Down
I am a little behind in blogging this week. Aside from the fact that I haven't actually finished a have only completed one project this month - I haven't been feeling well. After a gi-normous migraine and two weeks of vertigo-like symptoms and little after-thought headaches, my doctor decided to run an MRI/MRA on my brain. Nothing turned up. Well, I do

Welcome Spring with a wool afghan!
Welcome Spring with a wool afghan!
Spring has arrived. I know this because of the chorus of parrots and kookaburras that wake me each morning at 6 am. As if somehow nature knows that the calendar has turned over, it was 29 degrees here on the 1st of September. I did manage to crochet my way through winter and have a pile of finished objects to prove it.
My winter total is: 6 baby blankets, 1 woolen afghan, 1 hairpin shawl, 3 interesting other shawls, a and a plethora of hats and scarfs. I have also finalised a few new patterns which have been in development for sometime. I decided I would update the formatting as I now have a u beaut laptop with the latest version of word. While the documents do have a nice modern edge, the new word is counter intuitive which has slowed me down a bit. I have however added the following to my pattern collection:
Vintage style beanies, Tasmanian devils, cow

Every stitch has it's own definite symbol.
At any point you can compare your own progress with the diagram and see exactly where you are in your pattern. Have a look at a sample diagram to show you just how the system works. Here rounds (or rows) are numbered in red. (fig 1.) top A boldface number inside a chain loop tells you how many chain stitches you need for that loop. (fig. 2)
The chain stitch is abbreviated as ch and its symbol is a hollow oval top
In this sample diagram, a loop in round 7 has 5 stitches, while on round 8 it has 9 stitches.
On round 6, you are working in groups of 5 triple crochets, for which the abbreviation is tr

However, you can see the beginning and the end of each round throughout the pattern. top Now lets begin Look in the middle of the green circle (fig. 3). Like you are looking through a spyglass. Begin with a chain of 6 ch (you see 6 in the diagram) and join it to a ring with a slst ( 1. R:

As you can tell, it's a top down pattern. [Actually when I put it on the mannequin, I saw the potential of this design being a fashionably chic neck bangle when crocheted using the right yarn!]
Then disaster struck. I showed it to my niece excitedly and got her to try it on for size. And we had a conversation that went like this:
The soon-to-be-5yo gal said, "Auntie Mommy, the armholes are a tad tight." I replied
