Why crochet kippot by hand?
Because a hand-made kippa is special. The loving care that goes into it cannot be compared with the mass-produced item, even if the pattern is identical. Each hand-made kippa is unique, with tiny imperfections that are as essential to its beauty as the lines and knots in wooden furniture. We believe that making a kippa by hand is a form of hiddur mitzvah
Learning to crochet
This site does not teach you how to crochet. It assumes that you already know how to interpret the patterns and make kippot. If you don't, then it's worth finding someone to teach you - it's not easily learned from a book, although you might want to try the following websites: Crochet video and instructions Kippa base pattern (if you can already crochet)
What you'll find here
This site is a resource of photographs and patterns. It is intended for individuals only, so please don't use it if you're a company that mass-produces kippot. If you're crocheting by hand, but intend to sell your kippot, then please

Crocheted Neck Wrap Scarf
I present my crocheted neck wrap scarf. It is crocheted in the round and just slips over your head. As shown, it can be worn up over the chin and nose. It would make an excellent neck warmer and face warmer for winter and for snowmobiling. You can make it smaller and larger as desired by just adjusting your beginning chain. I have made several of these and found the snugger fitting ones work better for staying up on the nose. You can wear it just around the neck but this scarf gives you the option of pulling it up around the chin and nose to keep you extra warm. This is a very quick and easy project that uses less than 3 ounces of worst weight yarn. These neck wrap scarves make excellent gifts and would be a great Christmas gift too. Enjoy the free crochet pattern below.

86. Russianjoin
Russian join for changing yarn colors.

Knitting Any Way,
and Spinning, too!
Russian Join
Ann Yotter (famous and helpful contributor to the Bond knitters club online) has shared her instructions and pictures for the Russian Join as follows........... Step 1
Thread as skinny a needle as you can use with your yarn and go back into the
strand of yarn about 3" back from end. Try to run the yarn inside the plies
if possible. It helps to untwist the plies slightly to open up the center. Step 2
Pull the needle all the way thru the yarn leaving a loop at the end. Take
the 2nd yarn end (pink) and pass thru this loop.
Step 3
Repeat Step 1 with this 2nd piece of yarn so you have 2 interlocked loops
with each end threading back thru its own strand. Step 4
Pull the free ends down so the loops disappear and trim the ends off where they exit the strand (see where needle is pointing). Pull firmly to make sure they are long enough to hold. When you close down the loops in Step 4, just pull until closed. If you keep pulling, the strand will untwist and release the yarn end in the center of the strand.

KNITTING TENSIONS/GAUGE
We have assembled a list of all tensions (or gauge) which are known to us. If you find one which is not on this list, please let us know. All tensions listed below are in stocking stitch unless otherwise stated. The Craft Yarn Council of America symbols for yarn weights can be seen at this link. We recommend that you knit a tension swatch before you start on any new yarn. This may save you a lot of time later. A swatch should be at least six inches square, and blocked before you measure it. We have also included a table of wraps. This is a technique for determining the thickness of the yarn, and therefore the gauge or tension the yarn should knit to.

If you'd rather learn a few more stitches to expand your crochet repertoire try the links from crochet stitches. Crochet stitches covers the basics you need to move on to more advanced stitch combinations. How about felting? What is it? It's the process that wool or animal fiber goes through when subjected to heat, soap, agitation and pressure. Find out more about the different felting techniques available.
