Featured Crohn's disease patient discussions on symptoms at onset of disease
"My son was diagnosed 3 months ago, but he was sick for 6 months before. He complained with a stomach ache and I would take him to the doctor and he would say it's a virus and give him antibiotics. Soon he had missed so much school that I had to get something done. (He really does not like school so I thought he was faking at first.) He had diarrhea and abdominal pain but no fever, but the g.i. doctor did a CT scan for appendicitis and ended up with a diagnosis of Crohn's."

What is Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that is a chronic condition that may recur at various times over a lifetime. It usually involves the small intestine, most often the lower part called the ileum. However, in some cases, both the small and large intestine are affected. Sometimes, inflammation may also affect the entire digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, appendix, or anus. Crohn's disease affects males and females equally. It appears to run in some families, with about 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease having a blood relative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease.
What are the symptoms of Crohn's disease?
The following are the most common symptoms of Crohn's disease. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • abdominal pain, often in the lower right area rectal bleeding weight loss fever joint pain rectal fissure rashes
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) include a group of chronic disorders that cause inflammation or ulceration in the small and large intestines. Most often IBD is classified as:

Crohn’s Disease Co-Existing Disorders Inflammatory Disorders Crohn’s Disease Author: L Seiden and A Krumholz Crohn's disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disorder that affects primarily the terminal ileum but may also affect the small and large intestines in a segmental fashion. The disease is more common in whites than nonwhites and is much more common in patients of Jewish descent. The incidence of CD is 2 cases per 100,000, with a prevalence of 20 to 40 per 100,000. Clinically, CD presents as abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and generalized fatigue. Frequent systemic complications of CD include arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, iritis, erythema nodosum, and pyoderma gangrenosum. Neurologic and psychiatric complications have been reported in up to 15% of CD patients. The most common are:
  • seizures (the most frequent CNS complication) stroke peripheral neuropathy myopathy headache depression
The increased frequency of CD in whites who are also Jewish suggests that there may be a genetic predisposition for the disorder. No markers have been clearly established. The possibility of an infectious etiology has also been extensively evaluated without any consistently identified organism.

It primarily causes abdominal pain diarrhea (which may be bloody if inflammation is at its worst), vomiting , or weight loss but may also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes arthritis inflammation of the eye , tiredness, and lack of concentration. Crohn's disease is thought to be an autoimmune disease , in which the body's immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract, causing inflammation ; it is classified as a type of inflammatory bowel disease . There has been evidence of a genetic link to Crohn's disease, putting individuals with siblings afflicted with the disease at higher risk.

Anatomy Involved in Crohn's Disease
Overview of the Digestive System
The digestive system is made up of the digestive tract, which is a long series of organs, including the esophagus , the stomach , the small intestine , and the large intestine , that runs from the mouth to the anus . The digestive tract in an adult is about 30 feet long.
Digestion begins in the mouth where saliva begins to break down food. Food is swallowed from the mouth into the esophagus, which then moves the chewed food to the stomach. The stomach has strong

Recipes Who Runs All This? Links Welcome! I was first diagnosed with Crohn's Disease nearly ten years ago and, being a teenager at the time, I found it difficult to talk to others about the disease that did not have it. I created this site as a place to share stories and information - for teens, by teens - with Crohn's Disease, Colitis, or IBS. Apparently I've made a big impact here. I'm glad to do what I can to make a difference.
On this page, I will post experiences we teens have had with the disease. Any advice you may wish to pass on to others is also welcome. Since most all of us follow special diets, there is a recipe section. I have tried many of the recipes listed here, and several have become my favorites. Try them and let me know what you think. Please keep in mind that all of our diets are different, so what works for someone else may not work for you.

  • zSB(3,3) Description: Crohn's disease is a chronic disorder that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It most commonly affects the small intestine and/or colon. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main diseases belonging to a group of illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Research has shown evidence of a genetic predisposition to IBD among Ashkenazi Jews. Symptoms:
    • Abdominal pain, often in the lower right area Diarrhea Rectal bleeding, which may be serious and persistent, leading to anemia Weight loss Fever may occur A greater risk of developing colorectal cancer Children with Crohn's may suffer delayed development and stunted growth
Cause: Although environmental factors clearly contribute, there is strong evidence from studies of twins and affected families that Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), especially Crohn's disease, has a genetic basis. Research has shown evidence of a genetic predisposition to chronic IDB among Jewish individuals of Eastern European descent.

C rohn's D isease A ctivity I ndex CDAI = 2x1 + 5x2 + 7x3 + 20x4 + 30x5 + 10x6 + 6x7 + (weight factor) The purpose of this crohn's disease activity index (CDAI) calculator is to gauge the progress or lack of progress for people with crohn's disease. The reference article says "generally speaking, CDAI scores below 150 indicate a better prognosis than higher scores." (See Reference at bottom). However, since the original study, other researchers use a 'subjective value' of 200 to 250. Therefore, this just reinforces the fact that the purpose is to gauge Your Progress i.e. compare readings from one week to the next to determine if you are getting better or worst. Bottom line is that you need to use the CDAI on a regular basis and view it as a personal gauge. Watch for changes in your score (your gauge). This 'indicator' does NOT predicts the outcome of the disease. Crohn's disease conditions vary for each patient. This calculator is only a 'gauge' of progress i.e. not a prognosis tool!

Although considerable progress has been made in IBD research, investigators do not yet know what causes this disease. Studies indicate that the inflammation in IBD involves a complex interaction of factors: the genes the person has inherited, the immune system, and something in the environment. Foreign substances (antigens) in the environment may be the direct cause of the inflammation, or they may stimulate the body's defenses to produce an inflammation that continues without control. Researchers believe that once the IBD patient's immune system is "turned on," it does not know how to properly "turn off" at the right time. As a result, inflammation damages the intestine and causes the symptoms of IBD. That is why the main goal of medical therapy is to help patients regulate their immune system better.
