Causes
While the exact cause of Crohn's disease is unknown, the condition is linked to a problem with the body's immune system response. Normally, the immune system helps protect the body, but with Crohn's disease the immune system can't tell the difference between normal body tissue and foreign substances. The result is an overactive immune response that leads to chronic inflammation. This is called an autoimmune disorder. People with Crohn's disease have ongoing (chronic) inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Crohn's disease may occur in any area of the digestive tract. There can be healthy patches of tissue between diseased areas. The ongoing inflammation causes the intestinal wall to become thick. There are five different types of Crohn's disease:
  • Ileocolitis is the most common form. It affects the lowest part of the small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon).

Close Welcome to my page on Crohn's Disease. My name is Annee and I was diagnosed with this disease on August 27, 1998. For those of you out there who don't really know what it is, here's the rundown for you. Crohn's Disease, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), is a disease of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It predominates in the lower part of the small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon), but may occur in any section of the GI tract. Crohn's usually causes diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, fever, and at times, rectal bleeding. Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss may also occur. Symptoms may range from mild to severe, but people with the disease can live active and productive lives. Crohn's Disease is chronic and the cause is unknown. Medication currently available decreases inflammation and usually will control symptoms, but does not provide a cure. It has been estimated that as many as 2 million Americans have IBD. Males and females seem to be affected equally and while it affects people of all ages, most cases are diagnosed in young people in their teens and early twenties. © Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, Inc. Treatment
Treating inflammatory bowel disease is both a science and an art. Because each case is different, and no single treatment is universally effective, Mayo doctors design regimens to meet each person's unique needs. Those needs often change over time, and as your body responds to treatment, the most effective therapeutic approach is likely to change, too. At Mayo Clinic, doctors involve you in all treatment decisions and collaborate with you to find the approach that will bring you the greatest benefit with the fewest side effects. Your doctors will thoroughly discuss any concerns that you may have about a particular treatment, sometimes pulling in several specialists, so you can make the most informed decisions possible.
    Medications
research on TNF inhibitors TNF inhibitors do carry potentially serious risks, and your doctor will carefully weigh these risks against the benefits the drugs can provide.

Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea.
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine.
Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child.
