Crohn's disease
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crohn's disease (also known as regional enteritis ) is a chronic , episodic, inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by transmural inflammation (affecting the entire wall of the involved bowel) and skip lesions (areas of inflammation with areas of normal lining between). Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus ; as a result, the symptoms of Crohn's disease vary between affected individuals. The main gastrointestinal symptoms are abdominal pain diarrhea (which may be bloody) or constipation , and weight loss . Crohn's disease can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis , and inflammation of the eye The disease was independently described in 1904 by Polish surgeon Antoni Lesniowski and in 1932 by American gastroenterologist Burrill Bernard Crohn , for whom the disease was eponymized. Crohn, along with two colleagues, described a series of patients with inflammation of the terminal ileum , the area most commonly affected by the illness.

What you need to know A full feeling in your stomach, accompanied by abdominal pain and regular bouts of diarrhea, may be signs of Crohn's disease. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful:
  • Fill up on fiber Improve stool quality and other symptoms by eating high-fiber fruits and vegetables and by taking fiber supplements such as psyllium or glucomannan Fight back with fish Prevent relapses by frequently eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel, or sardines Take a daily multivitamin Choose a comprehensive formula containing zinc, folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin D to prevent deficiencies caused by poor absorption Discover beneficial bacteria Take 250 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii three times a day to help control diarrhea Say goodbye to smoking Kick the habit to reduce the risk of disease relapse Go with a low-sugar diet Reduce symptom severity by avoiding soft drinks, sweets, and sugar-filled processed foods

What is Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the wall of the gut. Any part of the gut can be affected. This can lead to various symptoms (detailed below). Crohn's disease is named after Dr Crohn, the person who first described the disease in the 1930s.
Understanding The Gut
The gut (gastrointestinal tract) is the long tube that starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. When we eat, food passes down the esophagus (gullet), into the stomach, and then into the small intestine.

Crohn's Disease: Overview Alternative Names: Regional Enteritis or Ileitis.
Crohn's Disease
causes inflammation in the small intestine . Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum , but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are known as the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). When the intestinal immune system does not function properly, many white blood cells accumulate in the inner lining ( mucosa ) of the gut. The white cells then release chemicals that lead to tissue injury in the form of inflammation. This inflammation of the mucosa can cause diarrhea , which is the most common symptom of IBD, with or without intestinal complications.

    Introduction:
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes ongoing inflammation of the intestinal tract. It is similar to ulcerative colitis, another inflammatory bowel disease. But ulcerative colitis usually is confined to the innermost layer of the large intestine and rectum. Crohn's disease can occur anywhere in the intestine, often in patches surrounded by healthy tissue, and can spread deeper into the tissues. Symptoms include chronic bloody or watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and loss of appetite. Symptoms tend to come and go, with the disease becoming active or going into remission several times during the person's lifetime. Crohn's disease can cause intestinal obstructions, ulcers (most often in the lower part of the small intestine, the large intestine, or the rectum), fistulas (hollow passages from one part of the intestine to another), and anal fissures (a crack in the anus or the skin around the anus that can lead to infection). In addition, people with Crohn's disease are at risk of malnutrition, because their intestine cannot absorb all the nutrients they need from their diet.

A placenta provides a home for a baby, keeps the mom's body from rejecting it and soon could help patients suffering from Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke, officials said Wednesday at the World Stem Cell Summit.
Patients with Crohn's disease, which inflames the digestive tract, have shown improvement with placenta-derived stem cells, which are adult stem cells, said Steven A. Fischkoff, vice president, clinical and medical affairs at Celgene Cellular Therapeutics. The New Jersey-based biotech company is moving into the second phase of a Food and Drug Administration-approved clinical trial that uses placenta stem cells in patients with Chron's disease. It also is beginning a trial with patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.
Soon it is planning to seek FDA approval to use the placenta stem cells in patients suffering from stroke, based on the work of a neurology researcher at Henry Ford Health System.

What is Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines. It primarily causes ulcerations in the small and large intestines, but can affect the digestive system anywhere between the mouth and the anus. It is named after the physician who described the disease in a landmark paper written in 1932. It is also called Morbus Crohn's, Granulomatous enteritis, Regional enteritis, or Terminal ileitis. The disease is found in equal frequency in men and women, and usually affects young patients in their teens or early twenties. Once the disease begins, it tends to be a chronic, recurrent condition with periods of remission and disease exacerbation. The disease tends to be more common in relatives of patients with Crohn's disease.
What causes Crohn's Disease
The cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. Some scientists suspect that infection by certain bacteria, such as strains of mycobacterium, may be the cause of Crohn's disease. To date, there has been no convincing evidence that the disease is caused by infection. Crohn's disease is not contagious. Although diet may affect the symptoms in patients with Crohn's disease, it appears unlikely that diet is responsible for the onset of the disease.
