BY AWAKE! WRITER IN CANADA "LANGLÄUFER LEBEN LÄNGER" —"Cross-country skiers live longer." This popular German saying highlights the value many see in the winter sport of cross-country skiing. Indeed, in many lands where winter snow abounds, the winter countryside is often crisscrossed by a gridwork of ski trails. In some lands, distances between towns and villages are often posted, and many trails have artificial lighting so that skiers can use them to commute between home and work. If shared in by a family or group of friends, cross-country skiing becomes a social outing that bonds and unites. In northern European countries today, some families ride 10 or 20 miles [20 or 30 km] by train and then ski home together.
The Origins
While skiing has been a necessary part of Nordic life for centuries, the popularizing of cross-country skiing as an international sport had to wait until the 19th century. At that time Norwegians improved the traditional skis by shaping, tapering, and refining them. They also developed a system of heel straps and toe straps that were the forerunners of modern binding systems. In Telemark, a mountainous area of south-central Norway, they soon initiated a series of competitions. The first recorded and timed cross-country ski race is believed to have been held there, with the winner covering the three-mile [5 km] course in about 30 minutes. Cross-country ski racing became popular in northern European countries soon thereafter, but it was another event that introduced it to the rest of the world.

    Cross Country Skiing History
Cross country skiing is the oldest type of skiing, having evolved out of a need to travel over snow-covered terrain. Along the way, about a century or so ago, some of these travelers realized that skiing could also be fun. Types of Cross Country Skiing Since then, cross-country skiing has evolved so that it can now be enjoyed in a wide variety of forms. Called variously "Nordic skiing", "ski touring", "track skiing", "skate skiing", "backcountry skiing", or "telemarking", the one common denominator is that the heel of the boot is free. Cross country skiing can be the focus of a week at a posh resort, or a half-hour fitness ski in the back yard at the end of a day of work. It can be a means to reach some remote destination, or it can lead to a racing career that stretches from age four to 84. Many life-long cross-country skiers have done all of the above and likely have a cellar full of skis to prove it. Up until the advent of lifts in the 1930's, cross country skiing was really the only form of skiing (besides jumping) as every descent began with a climb. Alpine events, for instance, weren't a part of Olympic competition until 1936. After World War II, lifts quickly proliferated on mountains and hillsides across America. As a result, on this side of the ocean at least, cross-country skiing practically disappeared as a distinct sport until a major revival began in the late 1960's. In this revival, an early slogan for a particular brand of ski (which I shall leave nameless) touted "If you can walk, you can ski". The result has been a large number who still believe that cross country skiing means walking on skis; but that misses both the fun and the fitness that are the hallmarks of the sport. Maybe some snowshoe manufacturer could take on a modified version of the above slogan, but on skis the idea is to, well, ski.

Learning To Cross Country Ski and Do Cross Country Skiing, Including Exercise Benefits of Cross Country
Due to the ongoing need to travel over snow-capped mountains, the oldest type of skiing had evolved. This type is known as "cross country skiing". Over the decades, travelers had realized that skiing can also be fun and not just a form of transport to travel mountains covered with snow. In this article, let us discuss further about cross country skiing including its exercise benefits. Since the evolvement of cross country skiing, it can now be enjoyed in different forms. Among the popular forms include back country skiing, skate skiing, track skiing, ski touring, and Nordic skiing. The common component of these forms is the free heel of the boot. In deciding to go for cross country skiing, you must choose the type of skis to use. Skis come in different ranges from light racing toothpicks to telemark skis. It can be wide on the tip with no side cut or with any alpine ski and matching side cut. Specialty skis are also made to match the size of the skier. Wax less or waxable skis are best for classic skiing. This type of skis relies much on the appropriate chosen wax for climbing the hills, propelling forward, and providing enough grip. It also provides consistent performance with minimal effort to measure both the condition and temperature of the snow.

    FIS Debars Italian Ski President
While the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ruling Council on Saturday suspended Italian Ski Federation president Giovanni Morzenti following his conviction on extortion charges, lifting threats of doping sanctions against Russian cross-country skiers. Morzenti was opted to be suspended by the FIS, until his criminal appeal plays out in Italian courts. To council meetings, any proxy the Italian Ski Federation may send will not have voting rights. In Cuneo, Italy, on Oct. 30, Morzenti was sentenced by a court to four and a half years in prison following his conviction on charges involving payoffs for financial protection. On charges of election fraud, the Italian federation is also investigating Morzenti. In both the cases, he maintains his innocence. To compete on the World Cup, the FIS also on Saturday cleared the way for Russian skiers after the Russian Ski Association met FIS demands to tighten up its anti-doping program. FIS said in a prepared statement released Saturday, "The council acknowledged the positive steps taken to address the many problems in a truly meaningful way. This approach of the Russian Ski Association must be a new beginning and it will monitor progress whilst supporting the ongoing work."
