    Preface
The material for this guide was first compiled in 1975. Since then it has gone through several revisions. In future years, it's likely to go through more as new trails are located andthanks to the Park and Ski Programmore ski parking access is plowed. Through the years, a number of skiers have provided information which has been incorporated into this guide, and we'd like to thank and recognize the following: Tom Amberson, Dave Arcano, Charles Blount, Bob Butler, H. Hilbert, Ray Hunter, Carl Linderman and Al Taylor. We'd also like to thank Gateway Cyclery, Raven's Nest and Scott's Ski Shop who have always been strong supporters of cross-country skiing in our area. Whether it's been helping with ski trail signing or sponsoring ski races and other community events, they've always been willing to lend a hand. By supporting them and buying locally, you're helping the community and brightening the ski opportunities in our area.

    Principal Sponsor
DWA Disabled WinterSport Australia (DWA) is a multi-faceted, self-help sporting organisation founded in 1978 by Australia's first Paralympic skier Ron Finneran and Canadian instructor Bruce Abel. The purpose of DWA is to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy winter sports and to enjoy the magnificent environment that is Australia's Snowy Mountains with fellow skiers. Members of DWA receive concessions on lift passes, private lessons at all ski resorts in Australia and access to an extensive range of adaptive ski equipment that enables skiing, regardless of strength or ability. DWA members range from recreational skiers to Australia's Winter Paralympians. Without the generous support of our sponsors and in particular the resorts throughout Australia, the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Paralympic Committee, the services and facilities currently available would come under severe threat. To complement their commitment we seek your support in the form of donor sponsor, associate member or by becoming an active ski guide able to provide invaluable "hands on" support. Winter sport for Australians with a disability is now no longer a dream. Thousands of disabled Australians regularly visit our snowfields, irrespective of disability, to enjoy winter sport in its many and varied forms.

      What is Cross Country Skiing?
How good of shape do you need to be in? What about age or physical problems?

Is real skiing similar to Cross Country Ski exercise machines?

How complicated are the equipment requirements?
      ...
What is the best way to go skiing the first couple times?

What is Cross Country Skiing? Cross Country Skiing (aka Nordic Skiing or XC Skiing) is, in the opinion of many exercise physiologists and researchers, the world's best aerobic fitness activity. The sport involves simultaneous use of arms and legs utilizing ski equipment including boots, poles, and skis. Want to see some proof of XC skiing's fitness punch? Check out this link featuring a chart showing caloric expenditure while XC skiing versus other aerobic activities. The primary functional difference between Cross Country Skiing (XC) and alpine (downhill) skiing is that in XC skiing, the skier is attached to the ski only with the toe of the bootwith the heel "free". In alpine skiing, the entire foot is attached to the ski. The free heel allows a XC skier to climb, descend and traverse terrain making the sport a truly "cross country" activity. In alpine skiing and snowboarding, the participant is limited to the range of downhill slope. With origins in Scandinavia 4000-4500 years ago, Cross Country Skiing has come a long way from being the sole method of transportation for snow and ice-bound Northerners. You can Cross Country Ski on every continent on Earth and in many island nations at Cross Country Ski Centers featuring prepared tracks as well as off-track in parks, woods, mountainsjust about anywhere! Competition in Cross Country Skiing spans the globe with a third of all the Winter Olympic medals being awarded in Cross Country Skiing and the other Nordic sports.
