About the People Cuba is the biggest country in the Caribbean and can be considered to be a melting pot of different cultures and races. The population of Cuba is about 11.4 million. The largest cities are Havana (2.2 million), Santiago de Cuba (440,000), Camaguey (300,000), Holguin (240,000), Guantanamo (208,000), and Santa Clara (200,000). Since May 1998, Cubans have required official permission to migrate to Havana. The origins of the population include Spanish (over 35%), African (over 10%), mixed Spanish-African (over 50%), and Asian (over 1%). You can see the hardships endured by the Cuban people etched into their faces, but you also see their amazing spirit and joie de vivre (the joy of living). Language and Manners The majority of Cubans speak Spanish. Other languages spoken are Haitian Creole and English.

Daisy Diaz Mora represents the Nicolas Guillen Foundation in Cuba, an NGO dedicated to preserving the work and legacy of Nicholas Guillen (1902-1989). Guillen was a foremost Afro-Cuban, a friend of Langston Hughes and Ernest Hemingway, first president of the Nation Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), and the poet laureate of Cuba. His poems have been translated into more than 25 languages, and have been used by several generations of Cuban musicians, artists and poets as inspiration and content for their works. Daisy is a specialist in artistic, cultural and media productions, and a leading expert on Afro-Cuban culture. Gema Suarez Cabrera is a specialist of the Association of Cuban Musicians, which is part of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). Gema is also the personal assistant of the current president of UNEAC, Harold Gramatges, who is a composer and friend of the late Nicholas Guillen. One of the purposes of this 15-City tour of the two Cuban scholars is to introduce North American audiences, especially the African Community, to Afro-Cuban music, poetry, and cultural life in general, and Nicolas Guillen and Harold Gramatges in particular. The videos and discussion will focus on Cubas African Roots that have had an important influence on Cuban society and culture, and the Cuban Revolution.

Music The music is with almost all security the Cuban artistic manifestation most diffused in the world. Already from principles of the XX century the Cuban music expanded outside of limit of the island and from then have had similar success most of the rhythms that have arisen, even establishing rules to level intenacional. Among the Cuban popular rhythms those more diffused are danzon, chachacha, mambo, the current salsa that is a derivation of son. Also, by the universality of the Cuban culture, a Cuban jazz also exists, as well as a hip hop and rap, with roots in the jazz of United States and the reggae of Jamaica and with a high international level.

The Tres was also invented in Cuba, but other traditional Cuban instruments are of African and/or Taíno origin such as the maracas, güiro, marímba and other wooden drums including the mayohuacan. Popular Cuban music of all styles has been enjoyed and praised widely across the world. Cuban classical music, which includes music with strong African and European influences.
Cuban literature began to find its voice in the early 19th century. Dominant themes of independence and freedom were exemplified by José Martí, who led the Modernist movement in Cuban literature. Writers such as Nicolás Guillén and Jose Z. Tallet focused on literature as social protest. The poetry and novels of José Lezama Lima have also been influential. Writers such as Reinaldo Arenas, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Leonardo Padura Fuentes, and Ronaldo Menedez have earned international recognition in the postrevolutionary era, though many writers have felt compelled to continue their work in exile due to perceived censorship by the Cuban authorities
