On July 26, 1953, he led an unsuccessful attack on an army post in Santiago de Cuba and was imprisoned. Released (1955) in a general amnesty, he went to Mexico where he organized the 26th of July movement. In Dec., 1956, he landed in SW Oriente prov. with a small group of rebels. Castro and 11 others, including his brother RaUl and Ernesto "Che" Guevara , survived the initial encounter and hid in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra . There, they organized a guerrilla campaign that eventually toppled the Batista regime on Jan. 1, 1959. Widely hailed as a liberator, Castro proved to be a charismatic, though sometimes ruthless, leader. He proceeded to collectivize agriculture and to expropriate native and foreign industry. He instituted sweeping reforms in favor of the poor, disenfranchising the propertied classes, many of whom fled. In Dec., 1961, he declared himself to be a Marxist-Leninist and veered the revolution toward the Soviet Union and the socialist block. Tensions with the United States steadily grew. In 1961, the United States organized an invasion of Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs (see Bay of Pigs Invasion ). A year later, the world came to the brink of nuclear war when the Soviet Union placed nuclear weapons capable of reaching the United States on the island (see

HISTORY OF
CUBA
By Jerry Wilkinson
Cuba is important to the history of Florida and the Keys because Florida was a Spanish possession until 1762 when Florida was traded to Britain. Even then, Spain insisted that the Keys were not a part of Florida. England contested this, but neither cared as long as one did not interfere with the other's shipping. Cuba was Spain's first real foothold in the New World and was Spain's stepping stone to the Americas. The Keys Indians traded with Havana for many years. Most of the Spanish shipwrecks were sailing from Havana to Spain when they wrecked on the Florida reefs. On October 28, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba and christened it "Juana," in honor of Prince Don Juan, son of Queen Isabella. Its Indian name was "Cubanacan." Slowly the name Cuba was adopted by the Spanish. Cuba's size and diversity of landscape no doubt convinced Columbus that he had indeed found Asia. Aborigines inhabited Cuba, as in all the New World, in pre-Columbian times. These are generally thought to be of three groups: Guanahatabetes, Ciboneys and Tainos. Of the three, the Tainos were the most advanced and subjugated the Ciboneys. As well as being hunters and fishermen, the Tainos were agricultural, and grew yucca, maiz, peanuts, squash, peppers, fruit and tobacco. They lived in villages in round shelters and the men wore no clothes. They were experienced ocean travelers and easily could have traveled the 90 miles to the Keys. The Guanahatabetes, who were the oldest, practiced a shell culture with similarities to that of the Keys Indians.

In large part, thanks to Raul, they will make pivotal decisions forging ahead a path for the island nation. Throughout Cuban history, the military has played a decisive and instrumental role in politics, immersing itself as an arbiter of power in Havana. Tracing its lineage from the colonial period where a Spanish military governor ruled with an iron fist, to army politics during the 1930s and beyond, the armed forces has heavily shaped destiny for the Cuban populace. However, what cohesion will the military have once the former maximum leader makes his terrestrial departure? 24. Lucky Luciano In Havana

Lucky Luciano in Havana
an excerpt from:
"The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano"
By early in January, word that the mysterious resident of Quinta Avenida was none other than Lucky Luciano had spread among the other Americans living in Miramar. "I was really surprised how many invitations I got to cocktail parties and dinners and things like that. It reminded me of the good old days in the late twenties and early thirties when all the society people around New York used to want me to come to their home, like I was some kinda celebrity. I guess I was a little nutty for acceptin' them invites, but I just couldn't help it. I was dying' to be with American people who was straight and legit and had nothin' to do with the rackets. Some of the guys belonged to good golf clubs and it made me feel I was back in Westchester and Connecticut, like in the days before I went to the can. The way things turned out, it all led to a lotta trouble." When the story broke, Lansky immediately went to see his friend Batista at his Miami home. He was assured that while Luciano had been unwise in his social life, nothing would be done to force him out of Cuba so long as he held a legal Italian passport and Cuban visa and could prove a legitimate business reason for being in the country-his interest in the Hotel Nacional's casino. Lansky brought that news to Luciano. "I guess Meyer thought this'd make me feel better, but it didn't cheer me up too much. I had one of them hunches of mine that trouble hadn't even started."

Taken together, Ada Ferrer's Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-1898, and Alejandro de la Fuente's "Race and Equality in Cuba, 1899-1981," provide a complete picture of one issue essential to Cuban history. Ferrer explores the hopes of nationalists for racial equality as they fought against Spanish colonial rule, while de la Fuente shows how those hopes were only partly realized after independence. As with most political and social movements based on idealism to a certain degree, the Cuban revolution did alter the sociopolitical landscape, but not nearly as significantly as they would have hoped. Ferrer's book is rooted in the historical archives of Cuba, the United States, and Spain. It gives a full portrait of the importance of race in the movement for Cuban liberation under Spain in the last three decades of the nineteenth century , decades, which saw three wars fought in attempts to throw off the Spanish rulers. Among the goals of the revolutionaries was the establishment of a society, which did not discriminate against individuals based on their race. De la Fuente, on the other hand, shows that once independence was won, this ideal goal was only partly manifested in post-colonial rule. He seems to argue, in contrast to Ferrer, that there is an inherent element of racism in Cuban culture that exists alongside the desire, goal or value of racial justice and harmony.
