Woman with a guitar by Georges Braque Cubism was a twentieth century avant-garde art movement that revolutionized European painting and sculpture , and inspired related movements in music and literature. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to present the piece in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles presenting no coherent sense of depth. The background and object (or figure) planes interpenetrate one another to create the ambiguous shallow space characteristic of cubism. The impact of modernism was a breakdown of unified cultural perspective that mirrored the loss of a unified pre-modern culture in the hubbub of urban life. This phenomenon was expressed in numerous forms, none more stark or striking than in cubism. Leading artists of the movement included Pablo Picasso , Paul Cézanne, and Georges Braque

The Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro, and refuting time-honoured theories that art should imitate nature. Cubist painters were not bound to copying form, texture, colour, and space; instead, they presented a new reality in paintings that depicted radically fragmented objects.

Cubism
Cubism was a 20th century avant-garde art movement, pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, that revolutionized European painting and sculpture, and inspired related movements in music and literature. The first branch of cubism, known as Analytic Cubism, was both radical and influential as a short but highly significant art movement between 1907 and 1911 in France. In its second phase, Synthetic Cubism, the movement spread and remained vital until around 1919, when the Surrealist movement gained popularity. English art historian Douglas Cooper describes three phases of Cubism in his seminal book, The Cubist Epoch. According to Cooper there was "Early Cubism", (from 1906 to 1908) when the movement was initially developed in the studios of Picasso and Braque, the second phase being called "High Cubism", (from 1909 to 1914) during which time Juan Gris emerged as an important exponent, and finally Cooper referred to "Late Cubism" (from 1914 to 1921) as the last phase of Cubism as a radical avant-garde movement.

Introduction
  • Chapter One: Some early works
  • Chapter Two: Self-Portrait 1907
  • Chapter Three: Les Demoiselles d'Avignon 1907 ... Introduction
Our aim is not only to show an amateur in art like you or I can appreciate Picasso's work but that our innocent approach can explain it more convincingly than the critics have done. There are three problems that the latter tend to side-step and that we intend to face head-on. The first is the artist's distortion of the human form; the second is attributing value to the various works; and the third is the relationship between the works and the society in which they were produced.
    Chapter One: Some early works
"La Vie" is the most mature of Picasso's early works, but not, as some people think, because of the blue light. "The Blue Period" is a term bandied about as though any picture painted by Picasso which is blue is of great artistic value. There are, of course, critics who believe that Expressionist paintings are good because, for instance, the sky is painted red or yellow instead of blue but the mature critic must ask: "How does the blue light contribute to the meaning of the picture?"
    Chapter Two: Self-Portrait 1907
But if skillfulness were the picture's only merit then the man in the street would be right that the picture was pointless for any philosopher of art will tell you that mere ability is not the proof of art or a pea-shooter who never missed his target would be a great artist.

Up
Cubism is a style of art created in the 1920s buy two famous painters Pablo Picasso and George Braque. They both used a lot of cubism in their paintings. Cubism is a type of art that shows movement through time. That means that instead of painting someone stiff, the artist would paint them to were they looked like they were moving. Another thing you do in cubism is you brake down the object (person or thing) into geometric shapes. That way instead of showing one face, the artist could use small shapes to show more than one. When the cubist artists were getting ready to do cubism, the first thing they did was they drew a sketch and drew the shapes on another piece of paper. Then, they would do the changes on the final sheet of paper. The last thing you do in cubism would be the shapes, shade in the picture, and then the picture would be complete.
Paintings
This cubism painting "Bather With Beach Ball" shows a women that is running with a beach ball. The beach ball is so small that it looks like just a plain old circle. If you notice, the background looks like a real life scene! This other painting called "Dora Maar Seated " is a painting that shows a woman sitting in a chair. If you notice, in this painting looks different from the other one. In the background it is cubism. But in the other one it has a real life back ground.

A descendant of Czanne s research on the creation of a pictorial space that is no longer a mere imitation of reality, and primitive art that challenges the obvious of Western tradition, Cubism disrupts the notion of representation in art. According to art historian John Golding, who specialises in the movement, Cubism is an absolutely original pictorial language, a totally new approach to the world, and a conceptualised aesthetic theory. So one can understand how it was able to give new direction to all of modern art.
