How to Become a Cult Guru
or, You Too Can Induce Mass Suicide
by Phil Milstein
Becoming a cult leader is not as tough as you might think. All it takes is a little charisma and some insecure, feeble-minded followers. The reasons you might wanna become one are many it pays well (and all of it tax-exempt), you get lotsa nookie, you can get other people to do your laundry, etc. As a cult guru, it is kind of tough to get health insurance benefits, but that's really about the only downside to a career as a leader of men, women and bastard offspring. What follows, then, is a set of E-Z instructions by which you can soon amass your own group of pasty-faced, glassy-eyed sycophantic no-hopers who will do your bidding for you.
To be a messiah you don't have to be big (Charles Manson was only 5'2"), you don't have to be smart (David Koresh had an IQ of 89), and you don't have to be good-looking ('though it doesn't hurt). All you have to be is confident, to the absolute. Once you've established your basic set of core beliefs your schtick

http://www.wellspringretreat.org/
Wellspring Retreat and Resource Center is a residential treatment center for those who have been abused in relationships, cults, situations of trauma, and by destructive therapeutic alliances resulting in emotional betrayal and/or physical harm. We offer hope and help through a program of counseling, education, and retreat. The work of Wellspring is continuing, despite the death of our founder and director, Dr. Paul Martin (June 28, 1946 - August 14, 2009). It is not the same without Paul, but we are still operating to help those who need our services. We are currently working on solidifying our new team. Your continued support of this landmark service would be most appreciated at this time.
SUMMARY OF SERVICES Since its beginning in 1986, Wellspring provides a unique, professional, two-week program of counseling and care in a safe, peaceful, and scenic location.
New Program Options:
1. Wellspring now offers a five-day intensive program. It is much the same as the traditional two-week program and costs half the price. This intensive program includes daily sessions with a licensed mental health counselor. It also includes workshops with a cult specialist.
2. Weekend counseling can be considered on an individual basis.

According to http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~religion/remid_report2.htm : Because "new religions" have so many texts, traditional scholars in religious studies do normally not consider them. p) George Chryssides r) Catherine Wessinger paint a caricature of the group which is shaped more by their current role than by actual experiences in the group news, like all social reality, is socially constructed . While it is true that facts can be distorted by reporters, the goal of an honest journalist is to deliver accurate news instead of constructed stories. The news is not constructed; a presentation is. One should remark that none of the authors claim any experience in journalism. The article states its goal is to develop a conceptual model that is capable of objectively describing and analyzing both the accounts rendered by government agents and the story as it was reported by mass media verfassungsfeindlich , hostile to the constitution." Prof. Dr. Irving Hexham teaches Religious studies at the University of Calgary; Prof. Dr. Karla Poewe teaches Anthropology at the same place. They are a husband-and-wife team. He also runs the NUREL-L mailing list, on which I participated before he had enough and kicked out all non-academics. The article begins by mentioning books by Bromley and Shupe as documentation on the anti-cult movement, and he claims himself that most anti-cult writers fail to meet scientific standards: of course, this shows us already what low quality is to be expected on the next pages. The authors claim that

Introduction The Anti-Cult movement is the name given by sociologists and scholars to designate the loose group of organizations and individuals who are opposing so-called "cults" on a strong "Us vs Them" duality. The movement mostly originated with Ted Patrick's kidnappings and deprogrammings in the early 70s and is based on the notion of mind-control , a concept that has been debunked in the 80's but is still alive in popular media. The movement resorted to conservatorship laws to get hold of cult members and forcibly "treat" them, and tried to legalize this practice further by trying to pass deprogramming laws . Exacerbating the fanatical reaction of cults and encouraging a cult phobia among the public and authorities, anticultists helped to precipitate mass tragedies like Jonestown Waco , and the Heaven's Gate . Today, the anti-cult movement is a potent force behind discriminative measures promulgated against minority groups in
