Art provides us with the means to look into a society's soul. We can learn a great deal about a culture (past or present) by their art. Art museums have cultivated a reputation as being "stuffy" and "stiff." A visit to Local art musuems Neighborhood: Hampton Roads

United States of America a museum should not feel like you're trespassing on hallowed ground. An art museum should inspire us and stir our emotions and thoughts. These art museums and galleries in Hampton Roads, Virginia allow us to do just that.
Chrysler Museum of Art: Norfolk, VA
The Chrysler Museum of Art (located at 245 West Olney Road) was founded in 1939 as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. The museum expanded greatly in 1971 when avid art collector and Chrysler heir Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. donated a significant portion of his art collection to the city of Norfolk. The museum houses nearly 40,000 objects, (60 galleries spanning 5,000 years of paintings, photography, sculpture, glass, and pottery) making it one of the largest and comprehensive museums in the United States. The Chrysler Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday and admission is free. The museum is "kid-friendly" and offers a variety of programs geared to families (particularly families with young children). The building and the view of the Elizabeth River are works of art themselves.

A Journey To The Past ...
The Frontier Culture Museum tells the story of the thousands of people who migrated to colonial America, and of the life they created
here for themselves and their descendents. These first pioneers came to America during the 1600s and 1700s from communities in the
hinterlands of England, Germany, Ireland, and West Africa. Many were farmers and rural craftsmen set in motion by changing
conditions in their homelands, and drawn to the American colonies by opportunities for a better life. Others came as unwilling captives
to work on farms and plantations. Regardless of how they arrived, all became Americans, and all contributed to the success of the
colonies, and of the United States.
To tell the story of these early immigrants and their American descendents, the Museum has moved or reproduced examples of
traditional rural buildings from England, Germany, Ireland, West Africa, and America. The Museum engages the public at these exhibits
with a combination of interpretive signage and living history demonstrations. The outdoor exhibits are located in two separate areas: the
Old World and America. The Old World exhibits show rural life and culture in four homelands of early migrants to the American

Cemeteries as Cultural Museums Wednesday, 17 June 2009 19:09 Birds in Words Cemetery Math
    Objective
Students will gain a respect for cemeteries by viewing them as cultural museums; a view into the past.  They will make personal connections to cemeteries by writing a biography of a deceased family member or community member.
    Materials
    • Tracing paper Large wax crayons and/or lumberman’s chalk Local library and/or historical society Historical costumes (optional)
    Procedure
  • Discuss cemeteries.  Ask the students if they have ever been to a cemetery and what their ideas or impressions of cemeteries may be.  Tell students they will be visiting a local cemetery.  Have them ask their parents if any family members are buried in the cemetery and where their graves can be found. Take a trip to the local cemetery.  Examine dates and symbols on the gravestones.  Look for the emblems placed near the graves of veterans.  Using the wax crayons or lumberman’s chalk and tracing paper, do gravestone rubbings of interesting stones, old stones whose writing is hard to see, and the stones of the students’ family members.  Discuss symbols and meanings.  Compare with others. Help students choose a person buried in the cemetery and write a biography about that person.  For those students whose family members are buried in the cemetery, they should choose the family member.  Other students may choose historical figures, veterans (service records and newspaper clippings about their experiences are often fairly accessible) or people whose gravestones are very large or elaborate (possibly indicating a wealthy or prominent person in the community about whom records are more likely to be found).
