Panama Currency History
For nearly 300 years, the stone paved, Camino Real , connect Panama on the Pacific coast to Porto Bello , on the Caribbean was the highway, over which most of Spain's commerce passed. At one time, Porto Bello was the most important commercial city for the Spanish New World. Traders came from Spain with all good from all over Europe, to trade with the American merchants from Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua. When the Treasure Fleet arrived in Porto Bello, there was a fair, that would last up to 40 days, as the traders went about there business. The population of Porto Bello would swell, as thousand converged in the city. While slaves unloaded the merchandize brought from Europe, others were loading the native products; gold, silver, cotton, tobacco, cocoa, etc., into the Royal Treasury Building. The gold and silver ingot were stacked in large piles, like firewood. Just before the Fleet arrived in Porto Bello, the government would start moving all of the goods stored in Panama, by mule train across the isthmus. Besides all of the merchants, the town will fill with the hundreds of mule skinners, slaves, etc, that was used to transport the treasures to Porto Bello. When all the trading and negotiations were completed, the goods were loaded on the ships, for transport back to Spain.

HISTORY AND INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT U.S. CURRENCY U.S. Currency dates from 1861 when Demand Notes were first issued. All U.S. Currency issued from that date until now remains legal tender. Only once in the past has the Government recalled any paper currency. This happened in 1933 when the Gold Reserve Act required all holders of Gold Certificates to exchange them for ordinary currency. Prior to 1861 other forms of paper currency circulated in the United States. Paper currency was used by the colonies while they were still under British rule since coinage was in short supply. Continental Currency was issued to finance the revolutionary war. These early bills seldom held their value and depreciated to a point where it cost more to print them than they were worth. After the Constitution was ratified the coinage system was established and the Government did not have a pressing need for paper currency. Soon after the Civil War began the United States found itself in desperate need of money to finance the war effort. This led to the Act of July 17, 1861 which permitted the Treasury Department to print and circulate money.

Currency history - history of Japanese Yen
The origin of Japanese currency can be traced to the Wu Zhu bronze coin of China, which was introduced under the Han Dynasty around 221 BC. Until the 8th Century the Japanese imported such coins from China. However, in 708 the Japanese government began minting their own silver and copper coins called the Wado Kaichin or Wado Kaiho, which imitated the Chinese Kai Yuan Tong Bao coin's size, shape, and weight.
Approximately 250 years later though, the Japanese government entered into a period of decline and as they could no longer mint their own currency, begun to import Chinese currency again. Over the next few centuries, the inflow of Chinese coins did not meet the demand for a monetary medium that resulted from the growing trade and economic expansion. To meet this demand, two privately minted Japanese coins (from the 14th - 16th century) Toraisen and the Shichusen entered into circulation.
Around the late 15th Century, warlords had accumulated large debts that needed to be paid off, which subsequently encouraged the minting of gold and silver coins known as the Koshu Kin. Under the rule of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Edo Period), gold coinage was made into a standard currency. The Tokugawa Shogunate Government then established a unified monetary system that consisted of these gold coins in addition to silver and copper. Minting took place in the Kinza Gold mints where the present head office of the Bank of Japan now stands.

CURRENCY HISTORY: American economist founded the PNB
Did you know who founded the Philippine National Bank (PNB)?
Charles A. Conant, an American economist, is said to be the funding father
of PNB who early on recommended the creation of a suitable financial system
for the Philippines. This could be made possible, he said, through
extension and modification of the National Banking Act, which would thus
allow such a bank to be formed. Among its functions would be the
maintenance of branch offices at provincial capitals, with not over two of
such offices in the United States.

History of the Greek coins
Ever wonder why our coins today look the way they do? How the basis for the decoration of coins developed? Today, most bills and coins alike share the common pattern of depicting the profile or bust of a ruler on the obverse, while the reverse bears the image of an important civic symbol - be it a building or an animal. This tradition began with the ancient Greeks From about the eighth century B.C. and even after the Greeks were absorbed into the kingdoms of Alexander the Great and his successors, the Greek world was characterized by the polis, the city-state , of which there were several hundred. Each polis consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside, and each had its own form of government, its own patron deities and heroes and sanctuaries dedicated to them, and its own distinctive economy. The poleis were fiercely independent, even when they were ruled by tyrants or dominated by Hellenistic kings, and their coins are eloquent testimony to their autonomy. Almost from their earliest appearance Greek coins used a combination of figures, symbols, and inscriptions to emphasize the independence and individuality of the poleis, depicting their patron deities and heroes, products, and even visual puns on the cities' names. The historical portraits on early Greek coins are a significant contribution to the history of art. Within them they reflect the highest ideals of the traditional art of the day, as well as provide exact replicas of images of many sacred and important buildings and temples, making their historical importance incalculable. From their very beginnings, coins were not merely chunks of metal to be used in commerce, but

The History of U.S. Paper Money In the early days of the nation, before and just after the revolution, Americans used English, Spanish, and French money. 1690 Colonial Notes
The Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first paper money in the colonies which would later form the United States. 1775 Continental Currency
American colonists issued paper currency for the Continental Congress to finance the Revolutionary War. The notes were backed by the "anticipation" of tax revenues. Without solid backing and easily counterfeited, the notes quickly became devalued, giving rise to the phrase "not worth a Continental." 1781 Nation's First Bank
Also to support the Revolutionary War, the continental Congress chartered the Bank of North America in Philadelphia as the nation's first "real" bank. 1785 The Dollar
The Continental Congress determined that the official monetary system would be based on the dollar, but the first coin representing the start of this system would not be struck for several years. 1791 First U.S. Bank
After adoption of the Constitution in 1789, Congress chartered the First Bank of the United States untill 1811 and authorized it to issue paper bank notes to eliminate confusion and simplify trade. The bank served as the U.S. Treasury's fiscal agent, thus performing the first central bank functions.

The history of money spans thousands of years. Numismatics is the scientific study of money and its history in all its varied forms. Many items have been used as commodity money such as naturally scarce precious metals cowry shells, barley , beads etc., as well as many other things that are thought of as having value Modern money (and most ancient money) is essentially a token — in other words, an abstraction. Paper currency is perhaps the most common type of physical money today. However, objects of gold or silver present many of money's essential properties.

Strong And Diverse Exporting
The Currency Board System (CBS) is not a new concept in economics. Dangers regarding the implementation of a CBS in Indonesia mean that it is important to first determine if the idea to adopt such a system is being touted for political or sound economic reasons. Monetary policy misconduct, which began with hasty banking deregulation in 1998, lead to a monetary crisis in 2006, and inexorably on to the recent banking crisis in which 16 commercial banks were closed, has cast ripples of panic through society. Panic resulted because the government liquidated the 16 banks before proper measures had been taken to allay the obvious fears such a move would cause. The CBS appears to be a way of hastily atoning for past mistakes and as such, the motives are therefore more political than economic. Is a CBS indeed an appropriate mechanism through which to meet the short-term and long-term objectives of the Indonesian economy? For a CBS to be successful there are two fundamental requirements: strong and diverse exports and a relatively small national population. Indonesia does not yet meet the first requirement and most certainly does not match the second. Weakness in Indonesia's export base and the time required to rectify this state of affairs mean that government foreign exchange reserves will become rapidly depleted if used to defend an arbitrarily selected exchange rate. Chart currency history speculators will be delighted if a CBS is implemented. Then their game will no longer speculative, instead becoming a one way bet. Speculators only need to estimate the value of foreign currency reserves and then begin to exert massive pressure on the new exchange rate, which will eventually buckle under the strain. The rupiah under these circumstances becomes a sitting duck.

Evolution Of Currency
Currency history shows currency beginning as a way of determining the value of goods or services, a process that involved trading something valuable after calculating the value of the goods or services received. This form of currency used to determine the worth of a product or service can be noted with the earliest currency history as far back as Egyptian society, where a set amount of food was exchanged for a shipment of goods. The next major development in currency history was the use of metal to indicate value. Metal objects were considered very valuable and were used as currency in the Middle East, a practice which spread across Asia into the Mediterranean countries. However, metal was not the only form of currency; other societies used items that they valued as forms of currency that could be traded. Currency came in the forms of gems, animal parts, cloth, etc. The development of a currency system based on coins began in Greece with the implementation of a unified value system that was based on the weight of silver and gold coins. These coins were standardized based on their weight, which made it possible to create a system of currency in which the value of a thing could be measured and applied to all things of the same category. Legal tender evolved over the 18th and 19th centuries, forming the basis of recent currency history. Today legal tender is part of our currency history as it comes in the form of paper money and coins which have been issued exclusively by the government. These forms of currency were originally based on a gold standard - the note or coin equaled a set amount of gold. Many countries still base their values of currency on this gold standard; however, the United States began using a "fiat standard" in which paper money is not backed by gold.

  • The Currency History of Singapore
Introduction
MAS maintains a collection of currency items that were used in Singapore since the 17th century. Currency notes and coins issued by MAS form part of the collection known as the MAS Heritage Collection (HC). Although it is an important part of Singapore's national heritage, it is by no means exhaustive and is intended as a guide for reference only. The HC is primarily a reference collection for future generations as part of our heritage and it is not intended for public viewing. The purpose of building up the collection is for posterity and renders information about a variety of subjects pertaining not only to current issues but also to the early currencies and coinages used in Singapore. The scope of the Collection comprises tokens, coins and banknotes.
Brief History of Singapore
Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in February 1819, and was administered from Fort Marlborough, Bencoolen, Sumatra, until June 1823. Thereafter Singapore was a dependency of Bengal until 1826, when it was amalgamated with Malacca and Penang to constitute the Presidency of the Straits Settlements. In 1946, the Straits Settlements was dissolved and Singapore became a Crown Colony and included the dependencies of Cocos Keeling Islands and Christmas Islands. On 15 September 1963, Singapore joined Malaya, Sarawak and British North Borneo to form Malaysia. On 9 August 1965, Singapore left Malaysia and became an independent Republic.
