Chinese Currency History – from Cowrie to Cash
In contrast to the early European coins, the Chinese coins were not used for propoganda, but for trade – that is visibly shown by their composition and layout. No royal portraits in gold and silver, but objects for daily use in copper dominate. At the early stage, it is the cowry shell: it serves as jewelry, as unit of account and as money. At the later stage, it is the equipment money, such as spade- and knife-money used in barter trade. The oldest round and stamped coins are regularly used in China only shortly later than in Europe; but a mutual induction is unlikely. Coins in China are mass produced: until modern times, coins are cast – a prodecure which easily allows a mass production. An artistic layout is not strived for. For that reason, Chinese coins are not subject to fashion. That is one of the main reasons for their constancy over time. China, Shang dynasty (1530-1100 BC), cowrie shell Cypraea Annulus, value 3 shu

The History of Paper Currency The history of paper currency is rooted in the monetary exchange system, which replaced bartering for goods. Coins created with a specific amount of gold, silver or bronze established a uniform measurement of exchange, which was difficult to transport because of the weight. In the 19th century, paper money began appearing to replace... Under the BNA Act, the federal government was given exclusive jurisdiction over currency trading
On August 3, 1914, an emergency meeting was held in Ottawa between the government and the Canadian Bankers Association to discuss the currency crisis. An Order-in-Council was issued that provided protection for banks that were threatened by insolvency by making notes issued by the banks legal tender. This allowed the banks to meet their depositor demands with their own bank notes rather than with dominion notes or gold. The government also increased the amount of notes that banks were legally permitted to issue. The government was also allowed to make advances to banks by issuing dominion notes against securities deposited with the minister of finance.

By Emily Beach eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? United States Currency History Wiki Commons The history of currency in the U.S. dates back well over 200 years. Our current system was created by early American colonists in the late eighteenth century. Though it has changed somewhat since that time, it is still based on many of the revolutionary ideas implemented at its creation. These include the dollar as the basis of currency and the use of a decimal system. This well-planned system of currency has led to the strength of the dollar in today's world market.

      History of Nigerian Currency
The West African Currency Board was responsible for issuing currency notes in Nigeria from 1912 to 1959. Prior to the establishment of the West African Currency Board, Nigeria had used various forms of money including cowries and manilas. On 31st March, 1971, the then Head of State announced that Nigeria would change to decimal currency as from 1st January, 1973.The major currency unit would be called Naira which would be equivalent to ten shillings: the minor unit would be called kobo; 100 of which would make one Naira. The decision to change to decimal currency followed the recommendations of the Decimal Currency Committee set up in 1962 which submitted its report in 1964. The change that took place in January, 1973 was a major one and this involved both currency notes and coins. The major unit of currency which used to be 1 ceased to exist and the one Naira which was equivalent to 10/- become the major unit: On 11th February, 1977 a new banknote denomination of the value of 20 Naira was issued. This was special in two respects:

The Origins And Evolution Of Foreign Currency History
The next stage of foreign currency history began when gold replaced silver as the standard for determining the value of currency. Foreign currency history describes currencies as beginning to represent weights of gold instead of silver, and were backed by gold reserves. This was considered the "gold standard", which was the primary measure of the value of most foreign currencies during the next century and a half of foreign currency history. The international gold standard declined as a result of the economic crises following World War I and World War II. In order to repair the economic damage caused by the wars, the Bretton Woods Agreement was adopted in 1944. The Bretton Woods Agreement established a fixed rate of currency exchange between the U.S. and Western European countries based on the value of the U.S. dollar and backed by the gold reserves. This agreement caused the U.S. dollar to become the dominant form of worldwide currency, and this dominance has lasted through modern foreign currency history until very recently.

... History History The United States Treasury's processing and issuance of paper currency began in 1861 with workers signing, separating, and trimming sheets of Demand Notes in the Treasury building. Gradually, the separating and trimming of currency sheets became mechanized, and, on August 29, 1862, a separate note processing operation was set up in the basement of the Treasury building. This new workshop eventually took on the new engraving and printing duties entrusted to the Treasury, becoming the basis of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Within a short time, the BEP was producing currency, revenue stamps, government obligations, and other security documents. In 1877, the BEP became the sole producer of all United States currency. The addition of postage stamp production to its workload in 1894 established the BEP as the nation's security printer, responding to the needs of the United States Government in times of both peace and war. Today, the BEP is the largest producer of United States Government security documents with production facilities in Washington, DC, and in Fort Worth, Texas. BEP History

China currency: Trade, Revaluation, Exchange Rate
Posted by Dror Poleg, April 9, 2005 5:36 PM The official currency of the People's Republic of China (PRC) is Renminbi (meaning in Chinese: "people's currency"). The People's Bank of China, the PRC's monetary authority, issues the Chinese currency. The official ISO 4217 abbreviation of China's currency is CNY, but it is also abbreviated as "RMB". Colloquially, the Chinese currency is also called Yuan and Kuai. During the previous decade, Mainland China's Currency was pegged to the U.S. dollar at 8.28 RMB. On July 21, 2005, it was revalued to 8.11 per U.S. dollar, following the removal of the peg to the U.S. dollar. The revaluation resulted from pressure from the United Stated and the World Economic Council. The People's Bank of China also announced that the Renminbi would be pegged to a basket of foreign currencies, rather than being strictly tied to the U.S. dollar, and would trade within a narrow 0.3 percent band against this basket of currencies. China has stated that the basket is dominated by a group of international currencies including the U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen and South Korean won, with a smaller proportion made up of the British pound, Thai baht and Russian ruble.

      Currency history:
The Trucial States included seven Sheikdoms and their dependencies (Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Ras al Khaima Fujairah, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaiwain), and were a British protectorate from March 1892 until December 2, 1971 when the Emirates became the United Arab Emirates. Indian Rupees (INR) circulated in Bahrain until April 28, 1959, when the Persian Gulf Rupee (XPGR), issued by the Reserve Bank of India, was created for use in the Persian Gulf. The Trucial States began using the Bahraini Dinar in June 1966 with 1 Bahrain Dinar equal to 10 Persian Gulf Rupees. In September 1966, all the Trucial States except Abu Dhabi adopted the Qatar-Dubai Riyal as their medium of exchange. Abu Dhabi continued to use the Bahraini Dinar until December 2, 1971 when the United Arab Emirates Dirham, divisible into 100 Fils replaced the Qatar-Dubai Dinar at par.
