CULTURE The ancient cultural traditions of Cyprus are maintained partly by private enterprise and partly by government activity, especially through the Cultural Services office of the Republic of Cyprus's Ministry of Education and Culture. The office publishes books, awards prizes for literature, and promotes Cypriot publications. Cities have public libraries, as do many rural communities. The government-sponsored Cyprus Theatre Organization stages plays by contemporary Cypriot dramatists as well as classical works. The ancient theatres of Salamis and Soli in the Turkish sector and Curium in the Greek portion have been restored; the one at Curium is used for the staging of a variety of plays, and a Greek theatre has been built at Nicosia Numerous painters and sculptors work in Cyprus, and the Cultural Services office keeps the state's collection of modern Cypriot art on permanent exhibition. In the village of Lemba near Paphos the Cyprus College of Art runs courses for postgraduate art students. The government encourages young composers, musicians, and folk dance groups.

Cyprus Culture today
Find out what makes Cyprus culture so unique Take a trip to Nicosia and you would think you are in any other modern European city. But head for a mountain village in Cyprus and you will discover a world that time forgot. In the old villages, old fashioned values still remain. Old ladies gather herbs in the fields and their husbands ride donkeys or sit in the village coffee shop, putting the world to right. You will find ancient crafts still being practised like lace making and weaving, the result of which is exquisite handicrafts that put the cheap, foreign, imported replicas to shame. This image of Cyprus culture is, perhaps, dying out but it symbolises the values that mark Cypriots out from their European neighbours.
Cyprus People - Family values
The family remains the centre of the social structure in Cyprus and that means both the immediate and extended family. That is why you will often see groups of 30 or more people having Sunday lunchin your local taverna! Traditional family values still apply and you are expected to look after relatives as they grow older. This is not seen as a chore in Cyprus culture as strong bonds between families still exist, unlike many other more modern western countries where families no longer live close to one another and old relatives often live in old peoples homes.

Turkish Cypriot Culture
The Cyprus culture is a rich and varied one with strong influences from Turkey and the surrounding Mediterranean countries. Between Turkish Cypriots, family life is very important, so they spend most of their free time with family gatherings, picnics, barbeques and weddings. People in Northern Cyprus are very sociable and like to go out. All towns have local cafes where people sit and chat in a warm atmosphere. They also arrange festivals especially in the beginning of summer. There are also legends in North cyprus. It is the birthplace of the goddess of love, and home to numerous heroes and saints.
Turkish Cypriot Family
The Turkish Cypriot family structure is that of the ex tender family which consists of three generations of people living close to eacother. The influence of the family on individuals is immeasurable. Although our island has undergone many social changes in recent times, the traditional family structure in Cyprus remains the same. Turkish Cypriot families are patriarchal and male dominance is the norm. Men are expected to provide for the family while women are responsible for housework and childcare. If men do assist with household chores it is viewed as a bonus.
Weddings
Weddings in North Cyprus are mammoth family events. Aunts, uncles and cousins and cousins join in the wedding preparations to ensure that the couple have the best day possible. The extended family usually provides the couple with a furnished place in which to live. The house or apartment is usually provided by the groom's family undertakes the interior decoration, furnishings and electrical appliances. This tradition in Cyprus enables a young couple to enter married life without any major worries. Parents are frequent visitors at their children's homes and usually continue to provide financial and emotional support.

Cyprus : Culture
When the Republic of Cyprus was accomplished in 1960, 60 % of Turkish Cypriots lived in villages. The rest lived in the five urban centers of Nicosia, Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos. Few Turkish Cypriots lived in Kyrenia. During the time of intercommunal conflict, the urban-rural distribution of the Turkish Cypriot population was unclear because of the thousands of refugees living in tents and temporary shelters. After the de facto division of the island in 1974, there was a gradual change in the urban-rural ratio. By the late 1980s, 51 % of the Turkish Cypriot population lived in urban areas. Given the small number of Turkish Cypriots, urban centers were not large. As of 1987, the Turkish Cypriot section of Nicosia had only about 38,000 inhabitants, Famagusta 20,000, and Kyrenia 7,100. Resettlement was an considerable process that directly involved about two-thirds of the Turkish Cypriot population. Accordingly about 60,000 Turkish Cypriots moved from their places of residence following the establishment of a cease fire in 1974. Most managed to move behind Turkish military lines on their own. Others, required international agreements or diplomatic initiatives to join their ethnic community. About 9,400 Turkish Cypriots took refuge in the British base areas. Another 8,100 came to territory controlled by Turkish forces after negotiations between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders under United Nations (UN) auspices resulted in an agreement to exchange populations. While all Turkish Cypriots moved to areas controlled by their community, not all Greek Cypriots returned to areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. Most of these Greek Cypriots lived in the Karpas Peninsula.

CYPRUS : CULTURE
The cultural heritage of Cyprus goes back more than 9000 years . Of course, today the situation in Cyprus brings with it that most of everybody's attention go to the events of the last 20 years rather than to those of several millennia ago. The north of the island is the Turkish part. Names of cities and villages are being changed Turkish and there is a lot of effort to make the inhabitants embrace the life and culture of its northern neighbor. The Republic is also trying to create an independent identity , and many places in the Republic have recently been renamed as well. However, there are numerous relics from the rich past of this island. Relics from every era - Greek temples, Roman mosaics and 15th-century wall-paintings. Most of these remainders of the past still influence the artists of today. Many villages specialize in a particular art form. During a trip around Cyprus the visitor can see pottery, silver and copperware, basket weaving, tapestry and Lefkara's famous lacework, all being manufactured on the spot.. The division is also clearly visible in the religious field : the northerners are mostly Sunni Muslim, whereas the southerners are Greek Orthodox.
