In Cyprus culture it is tradition to offer visitors a glyka (conserved fruit)
with Greek coffee and a glass of water.
Backgammon (Tavli)
is loved by many and integral to the culture of Cyprus! It's the Greek version of backgammon (tavli in Greek is board) and very popular with people of all ages.
Tavli used to be the preserve of only men who could always be seen playing the game and sipping coffee in their local Greek kafeneio (cafe only for men). Times have changed and today many women enjoy playing tavli with friends in local cafes.
Komboli
Otherwise know as worry beads and also very much part of everyday Cyprus culture. Cyprus people love these pretty little beads which are used to help relax and meditate on life whilst having a drink or just sitting enjoying the view. Try it, it really does work!
The culture of Cyprus is rich in history and the myths and legends of Aphrodite . The entire town of Kato Paphos is listed in UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage site which also lists nine Byzantine churches in the Troodos area of the island.

Cyprus Culture
An introduction to Cypriot Culture Cyprus is a unique blend of archaeology, history and tradition with a warm and generous helping of hospitality improved with centuries of Cypriots welcoming visitors to their shores. The cornerstones of the year’s calendar are the religious festivals of the Greek Orthodox Church which are enthusiastically observed by young and old alike. The main towns are within easy travelling distance of each other as they are linked by an efficient highway network. There are a colourful blend of modern sophisticated shops selling all the international brands, old workshops where tailors, shoemakers and copper craftsmen continue their trade in the same way their grandfathers did before them. There are; beautiful hotels (including several that are listed amongst the top hotels in the world), restaurants offering a galaxy of different cuisines that are complemented by the country’s excellent wines and there is a rich evening programme available that ranges from the colourful bouzouki evenings in traditional tavernas to concerts by international orchestras and ballet companies. Away from the exciting bustle of the towns, life continues at a much slower pace in the villages where time is still measured by the length of the sun’s shadows and the passing seasons. The impact of modern living is less noticeable here as housewives still spend hours preparing meals using home grown vegetables and herbs. Many of the younger generation have moved to the towns in search of well-paid jobs as Cypriots enjoy a good standard of living but ‘home is where the heart is’ and at weekends, Bank holidays, Easter and Christmas, everyone tries to get home to their village to spend time with their family and to enjoy the traditional food specialities for each festival.

North Cyprus Legends
Home of the Gods
The Olympian gods: Zeus, Apollo, Poseidon, Dionysos, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Artemis and Demeter, other lesser gods and heros, such as Asclepios, Persephone, Heracles, Leto and the Nymphs established themselves in Cyprus. The gods felt comfortably at home here, having found another mountain of Olympian heights, and settled on the highest peak of the troodos mountains.
Geologists say that the rocks of Cyprus were created during the Cretaceous period, which means they are 150 million years old.
However legend tells us that when God created the world he tossed from his hands lumps of clay which fell into the sea, from one of these Cyprus was created.
Five Finger Mountain
There are many legends about the Five Finger Mountain. One tells the story of a conceited villager who fell in love with the local queen and asked for her hand in marriage. The queen wished to be rid of the impertinent young man and requested that he bring her some water from the spring of St Andreas monastery in the karpas.
Dighenis
Another legend tells of the giant Byzantine hero, Dighenis, fleeing from his arab pursuers. As he lept across the sea he grasped the top of the mountain and left his hand print. Thus the Five Finger Mountain.

North Cyprus Evil Eye
This amulet against evil eye is very typical in North Cyprus. You can find it all over Turkey and North Cyprus: women use it as bracelets, earrings or necklaces; Turkish people use it hung in their house, office and their car, also babies have it hung in their cloths. It should be mainly blue and look like an eye. There are very different sizes but the shape is usually round. The Turkish name for this amulet that protects one from the evil eye is nazar boncuk.
But what is behind this turkish superstition? Once upon a time there was a rock by the sea that even with the force of a hundred men and a lot of dynamite couldn't be moved or cracked. There was also a man in this town by the sea, who was known to carry the evil eye (Nazar). After much effort and endeavor, the town people brought the man to the rock, and the man, upon looking at the rock said, "My God ! What a big rock !" The instant he said it, there was a rip, roar and crack, and instantly the immense and impossible rock was found to be cracked in two. The force of the evil eye (nazar) is a widely accepted and feared element in Turkish and Turkish Cypriot daily life. So the idea is to protect yourself, your house, your office and loved ones. The Nazar amulet can be seen dangling from the bumpers of taxi cabs, pinned to the clothes of babies, built into the foundation of modern office buildings and guarding the doorways of kebap houses. If you want to use it in your house you should hang it in the entrance of the house, so any visitor will see it. If you want to wear, the most common one is a small amulet that can be hung on your cloth, or from your bag. Also you will find bracelets, earrings or necklaces in different forms and shapes to be used.
