Home Company Profile Property Search Plot Search ... Weather Now! CYPRUS GEOGRAPHY Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island with a total area of 3,572 square miles (9,251 sq.km). It is situated between three continents at the crossroads of one of the most ancient and traditional sea routes of the world and is at a flying distance of less than three hours from the heart of Europe. This strategic location of the island has played an important role in its continuing development into a financial and tourist centre.
The estimated population of Cyprus is 700,000, 80% of which are Greek Cypriots, 18% Turkish Cypriots, and 2% Armenians, Maronites, British and other European expatriates. Nicosia is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus with a population of approximately 210,000. It is situated roughly in the centre of the island and is the seat of government and main commercial centre. Limassol is situated in the south, has 180,000 inhabitants and is the main commercial port of Cyprus with a booming tourist industry. Larnaca and Paphos are the third and fourth largest towns respectively with populations of 60,000 and 40,000. The latter two are also tourist resorts and each has an International Airport. The south-east tip of Cyprus is also an important tourist resort with its endless coastline of rocky coves and sandy beaches.

Only some of the forest remains, but mountains and beaches combine to make Cyprus a favourite resort. Cyprus has a nearly ideal Mediterranean climate, with more than 300 warm, sunny days a year, and a brief, mild winter with occasional rain.

      Cyprus Geography
The island of Cyprus is situated in the Eastern Basin of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, measuring 240 km in length, and 100 km in width. Due to its geographic location, Cyprus can be included in the Middle East, Western Asia, or Europe. Turkey is 75 km to the north, Syria is 105 km to the east, Lebanon is 108 km to the east, Israel is 200 km to the southeast, Egypt is 380 km to the south, the Greek mainland is 800 km to the west-northwest: Rhodes is 400 km away, and 280 km from Cyprus to the small Dodecanese island of Kastellórizo (Meyísti). Cyprus’ physical setting is dominated by the mountain masses and the central plain they encompass, the Mesaoria. The Troodos Mountains cover most of the southern and western portions of the island and account for roughly half its area. The narrow Kyrenia Range, extending along the northern coastline, occupies substantially less area, and has lower elevations. Coastal lowlands surround the island with varying widths. The Mesaoria (meaning between the mountains) is a sweeping plain that makes up the centre of the island. The Mesaoria plain is bounded on the east and west by the Mediterranean Sea, on the south by the Troodos mountains, and on the north by the Kyrenia mountains. It has an area of approximately 1000 square km. It rises to an altitude of 325 metres, with an average elevation of around 100 meters. There are a number of rivers and other water courses crossing this plain, but none of them have water all year round. The Mesaoria is the most settled region on the island, containing dozens of villages and many of the largest towns, including the capital, Nicosia.

    GEOGRAPHY
Cyprus Table of Contents The physical setting for life on the island is dominated by the mountain masses and the central plain they encompass, the Mesaoria. The Troodos Mountains cover most of the southern and western portions of the island and account for roughly half its area. The narrow Kyrenia Range, extending along the northern coastline, occupies substantially less area, and elevations are lower. The two mountain systems run generally parallel to the Taurus Mountains on the Turkish mainland, whose silhouette is visible from northern Cyprus. Coastal lowlands, varying in width, surround the island. Terrain The rugged Troodos Mountains, whose principal range stretches from Pomos Point in the northwest almost to Larnaca Bay on the east, are the single most conspicuous feature of the landscape. Intensive uplifting and folding in the formative period left the area highly fragmented, so that subordinate ranges and spurs veer off at many angles, their slopes incised by steep-sided valleys. In the southwest, the mountains descend in a series of stepped foothills to the coastal plain. While the Troodos Mountains are a massif formed of molten igneous rock, the Kyrenia Range is a narrow limestone ridge that rises suddenly from the plains. Its easternmost extension becomes a series of foothills on the Karpas Peninsula. That peninsula points toward Asia Minor, to which Cyprus belongs geologically.
